In recent fast paced life, the demands and pressures of work left me feeling mentally and physically stressed. I decided to disconnect from my job for a while for a mental break. As a nature lover, without any delay, I came to Borneo, the world’s third largest island.
Upon arrival, a local offered to be my guide, which was a great bonus for me. He led me through the jungle and I was immersed in the exploration. One day, the guide turned off the smooth road and took me across a rough hillside instead. We picked our way gingerly when suddenly, a Rafflesia (大王花) appeared into my view among those stones. More than delighted, I bent down and put my nose practically to feel the flower’s special flavour.
As I was approaching the end of my trip, there was another thing highlighting my trip. We happened to encounter the king of the crocodile (鳄鱼), a saltwater crocodile, which can grow to a length of 6 meters. It was getting dark. When we shone a flashlight towards the muddy shore, little sounds emerged in the darkness as if something unseen underwater had broken the mud. Taking a second look, we spotted two greedy eyes just above the water line. Cautiously, we approached it and finally could figure out it was a baby crocodile. Though alarmed, I could proudly talk big that I had encountered a hungry crocodile in the wild and lived to back.
Though I have settled back into the routine of everyday life now, the experience stays long after the physical journey ended. I have learned to face life’s challenges with a renewed outlook. Despite the rat race of daily existence, try to spare time to spot the breathtaking beauty of nature and the heartfelt connections with others. The world out there is so fascinating.
4. Why did the author go to Borneo
A. To connect better with his work.
B. To relieve himself of the pressures.
C To keep an appointment with a local guide.
D. To reward himself for his promotion in job.
5. What does the underlined word “gingerly” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Patiently. B. Roughly. C. Cautiously. D. Rapidly.

A. Critical. B. Instructive. C. Regretful. D. Humorous.
7. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph
A. Keep a balance between life and work.
B. Battle with challenges from life and work.
C Research your destinations ahead of time.
D. Learn more about travel safety knowledge.

In 2018, Russian scientists took a soil sample from deep in the permanently frozen ground in Siberia in Russia. They discovered two tiny round nematodes (线虫) frozen in the sample, which were so small that they could only be seen with a microscope. Tests showed the soil had been frozen for about 46,000 years old. When the nematodes were placed in room temperature, they began to move. The nematodes are the oldest living animals ever brought back to life after being frozen. The discovery makes up for the research on how living things can survive in tough conditions.
Nematodes can live for years if they’re frozen. They can enter a special state called cryptobiosis (隐生现象) during which animals reduce their activities and consume very little energy. Before this, the longest nematode had been known to survive through cryptobiosis was about 25 years. Being revived after 46,000 years was a new record for any kind of animal.
The nematodes were sent off to Germany to be studied further. The researchers found the two nematodes were a new species of nematode that had not yet been discovered. That’s not too surprising, since there are so many species of nematodes. They also found the nematodes were able to survive being frozen better if they were dried out a little first. The drying helped them produce a special sugar called trehalose (海藻糖), which helped them survive being frozen. The scientists also studied a nematode species that is common these days. They found that it also uses the sugar to protect itself in cryptobiosis.
Both of the nematodes were females. Before long, they began to have babies. Some kinds of nematodes, including these, have the ability for a single nematode to have babies all by itself. The two original frozen nematodes have now died. But their babies had babies who had babies, and so on. Most of the nematodes only live a month or two unless they get frozen.
8. What do we know about the two nematodes in the first paragraph
A. They were the oldest living animals.
B. They were still alive when warmed up.
C. They were found on the surface of the ground.
D. They were the tiniest creatures ever discovered.
9. How does cryptobiosis affect nematodes
A. It slows down the pace of their life.
B. It helps them speed up their drying.
C. It gets their body temperature down.
D. It stops them from consuming energy.
10. Which of the following is unrelated to the nematodes’ survival for years
A. Cryptobiosis. B. Trehalose. C. Their sex. D. Dry condition.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Female nematodes live longer than the male ones
B. Nematodes can produce young when they are frozen
C. Nematodes are ranked the fastest producing creatures
D. Short-lived nematodes survived for thousands of years
D
If you live in San Diego, you’ve probably noticed some strangely coloured water on the beach lately. You might wonder about red tide, but it’s actually an intentional job. Scientists at UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Washington have been experimenting with dyeing (给……染色) the ocean at San Diego beach pink. What could they possibly be up to
This is being done for a study that examines how fresh water on the outlet of the sea is intermixing with the ocean. The experiment is called Plumes in Nearshore Conditions (PiNC) . “I’m excited because this research hasn’t been done before and it’s a really unique experiment,” said Sarah Giddings, a Scripps coastal oceanographer leading the PiNC study. “The aim is to understand how fresh water interacts with ocean waves, since it is usually warmer than ocean water and more floating.” The researchers are hoping that this pink dye experiment will help them record more about how pollutants and sediments (沉积物) are distributed in the ocean water through these additions of fresh water.
The fresh water is dyed pink so that the team can easily keep track of it when fresh water is added to the sea water. The dye does not threaten the wildlife living there and is then spotted as it progresses in the water. It is tracked by sensors on poles that are located along the sand as well as by drones There’s also a device that tracks the light that is given off by the pink dye. The sensors record the height of the waves, ocean currents and temperature.
Giddings explained, “We’re bringing together a lot of different people with different expertise. I think it’s going to have some really great results and impacts. We will combine the results from this experiment with a former field study and computer models to help us further understand how the dyed fresh water spreads.”
12. How does the author lead in the topic of the text
A. By showing a strange phenomenon. B. By making an assumption.
C. By quoting a well-known saying. D. By making a comparison.
13. What is the purpose of Plumes in Nearshore Conditions
A. To introduce the benefits of dyeing sea water pink.
B. To show how fresh water combines with sea water.
C. To prove that fresh water is warmer than sea water.
D. To examine the impact of fresh water on sea water.
14. Why is pink dye used by the team
A. It can enormously give off light. B. It can function well with sensors.
C. It can be recognized easily and eco-friendly. D. It seems to attract wildlife and spread rapidly.
15. What will the researchers do according to Giddings’ words in the last paragraph
A. Challenge the results with some experts. B. Build more scientific computer models.
C. Experiment with dyes of another colour. D. Integrate more results of former studies.

The words every parent is afraid of hearing were spoken to me at my son’s bedside in our local hospital early last year. “Ma’am, your son is very sick.”
What began as stomach pains had turned into a loss of blood that landed him in the emergency room the night before. After testing, it was confirmed that my previously healthy and energetic son now had a colon (结肠) that was attacking itself. It would have to be removed.
Of course, money wasn’t the first thing on our minds. His survival was front and center. But over the next few days, as we waited out the lengthy process to get him transferred to a university hospital for surgery, it suddenly began to dawn on me: How would we pay for this We had insurance, but it was the bare minimum that we could afford. This was happening at the beginning of the year, so our first and most terrifying crisis was meeting the shocking $7,500 deductible (免赔额).
To some families, this might not seem like much. But we are just an average-income family and coming up with that amount of money at once was next to impossible.
I tried to put it out of my mind and keep all my focus on my son and his health We had a long road ahead of us and stressing over something beyond my control was not going to help the situation at hand.
But, still, it was there.
On one of those endless hospital nights waiting for his transfer, I was texting my good friend Vanessa and let that figure slip: $7,500. I knew there would be many bills to come, but that first seemingly unattainable number kept floating around in my mind. She sympathized and let me get out my fear and frustrations like the great friend she is. Then we said good night, and I tried to get some sleep.
注意:

A. Patiently. B. Roughly. C. Cautiously. D. Rapidly.
6. What is the tone of the author when recalling the saltwater crocodile he met
A. Critical. B. Instructive. C. Regretful. D. Humorous.
7. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph
A. Keep a balance between life and work.
B. Battle with challenges from life and work.

In 2018 Russian scientists took a soil sample from deep in the permanently frozen ground in Siberia in Russia.
They can enter a special state called cryptobiosis (隐生现象) , during which animals reduce their activities and consume very little energy.
11 What can be the best title for the text
A. Female nematodes live longer than the male ones
B. Nematodes can produce young when they are frozen
C. Nematodes are ranked the fastest producing creatures
D. Short-lived nematodes survived for thousands of years
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“When the nematodes were placed in room temperature, they began to move.”(当线虫被放置在室温下时,它们开始移动。)
根据第二段“They can enter a special state called cryptobiosis (隐生现象) , during which animals reduce their activities and consume very little energy.”(它们可以进入一种特殊的状态,称为隐生现象, 在此期间,动物减少了它们的活动并且消耗很少的能量。) 故选A项。
根据第二段“Nematodes can live for years if they’re frozen. They can enter a special state called cryptobiosis (隐生现象) , during which animals reduce their activities and consume very little energy.”(如果被冷冻,线虫可以存活数年。 及第三段“They also found the nematodes were able to survive being frozen better if they were dried out a little first. The drying helped them produce a special sugar called trehalose (海藻糖), which helped them survive being frozen.”(他们还发现,如果先干燥一点,线虫在冷冻状态下能够更好地存活。
根据第一段“They discovered two tiny round nematodes (线虫) frozen in the sample, which were so small that they could only be seen with a microscope. Tests showed the soil had been frozen for about 46,000 years old. When the nematodes were placed in room temperature, they began to move.”(他们发现了两种微小的圆形线虫冷冻在样本中,这些样本太小了,只能用显微镜才能看到。 及最后一段“Most of the nematodes only live a month or two unless they get frozen.”(大多数线虫只有一两个月的寿命,除非它们被冷冻。)

A 13. B 14. C 15. D

故填where。

根据下文“over the year as nature takes its course”可知,此处的时态要用一般现在时,结合主语Shennongjia’s beauty,是不可数名词,谓语动词用第三人称单数形式,所以此处用varies。

故填to increase。

The words every parent is afraid of hearing were spoken to me at my son’s bedside in our local hospital early last year. “Ma’am, your son is very sick.”
What began as stomach pains had turned into a loss of blood that landed him in the emergency room the night before. After testing it was confirmed that my previously healthy and energetic son now had a colon (结肠) that was attacking itself.
I tried to put it out of my mind and keep all my focus on my son and his health. We had a long road ahead of us and stressing over something beyond my control was not going to help the situation at hand.

I could not believe the flood of love and support that came from such unexpected places.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, everything would change. Vanessa came to the hospital. After knowing about the whole situation, she said, “I want your permission.” She went on to say that she wanted to start a Go Fund Me for us. A Go Fund Me for me Would my pride allow that “It’s not for you. It’s for him.” With those wise words from my all-knowing friend, I gave her the go-ahead. Within days, we had almost the entire amount to pay our deductible.
I could not believe the flood of love and support that came from such unexpected places. So many people that I didn’t even realize knew my name were suddenly throwing generous sums our way. The collective love coming through that computer screen was a feeling I had never known. Strangers were helping us through the hardest thing we’d ever been through. After that first deductible crisis was overcome, things started looking up financially. My son was approved for a state-based insurance plan that covered most of his treatments and medications and he is gradually recovering, too. The kindness of strangers changed our lives.
