When Amelia Lisowe was told she was too young to volunteer, she decided to make a difference by herself. The Benton, Arkansas native launched her own non-profit, Lisowe’s Lights, in 2018, donating over 500 nightlights to kids in the Arkansas foster (寄养的) system that year alone.
Since, she has expanded to all 50 states (and 9 countries) and raised funds to distribute more than 15,000 nightlights — with no plans of slowing down.
“Kids in foster homes sometimes have to leave in the middle of the night without taking anything with them,” she says. “I wanted to help them feel less scared and more safe.” The 12-year-old hopes to give away at least 2,500 more lights in 2023.
Amelia grew up volunteering with her mom, Lauren, who encouraged her daughter to find something she was good at and use it to make the world a better place. “I’m so proud of her,” Lauren adds. “She’s involved in every decision we make. Every time we spend money, she helps decide if something is a good idea or will further our cause.”
Amelia also gets help from friends in the Royal International Miss Pageant system, who run their own nightlight drives in person and online. Amelia, a sixth grader who also volunteers at her local food bank and nursing home, says she feels the impact of her work most when she hears from organizations that have put her lights to use.
“I heard about one boy in Oklahoma who never turned off his hall light, not because he was scared, but because he wanted to make sure his little sister was always doing okay across the hall,” Amelia shares. “When they got their nightlight, he knew she wouldn’t be afraid anymore.”

Water makes up 71% of the Earth’s surface, but no one knows how or when such massive quantities of water arrived on the Earth. A new study published in the journal Nature brings scientists one step closer to answering that question.
Led by University of Maryland Assistant Professor of Geology Megan Newcombe, researchers analyzed melted meteorites (熔化的陨石) that had been floating around in space since the solar system’s formation 4.5 billion years ago. They found that these meteorites had extremely low water content — in fact, they were among the driest materials ever measured outside the Earth.
These results, which let researchers rule them out as the primary source of the Earth’s water, could have important information for the search for water — and life — on other planets. It also helps researchers understand the unlikely conditions making the Earth a livable planet.
Researchers wanted to understand how our planet managed to get water because it’s not completely obvious. Getting water and having surface oceans on a planet that is small and relatively near the sun is a challenge.
“We knew that plenty of outer solar system objects were differentiated, but it was sort of secretively assumed that because they were from the outer solar system, they must also contain a lot of water,” said Sune Nielsen, a study co-author and geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “Our paper shows this is definitely not the case. As soon as meteorites melt, there is no remaining water.”
The findings have applications beyond geology. Scientists of many fields — and especially exoplanet (系外行星) researchers — are interested in the origin of the Earth’s water because of its deep connections with life.
“Water is considered to be a must for life to be able to exist, so as we’re looking out into the universe and finding all of these exoplanets, we’re starting to work out which of those planetary systems could be potential hosts for life,” said Newcombe. “In order to be able to understand these other solar systems, we want to understand our own.”
8. What did the new study focus on
A. The history of the Earth. B. The origin of the Earth’s water.
C. The source of meteorites. D. The structure of solar system.
9. What did researchers prove from melted meteorites
A. The driest materials coming from other planets.
B. An impossible source of the Earth’s water.
C. The challenge of getting water near the sun.
D. The likely conditions making the Earth habitable.
10. Why does the subject of the Earth’s water appeal to scientists
A. Because it is closely related to life.
B. Because it can make them famous.
C. Because it concerns many disciplines.
D. Because it is deeply connected with outer space.
11. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A science fiction. B. A geography textbook.
C. A book review. D. A research report.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. D

College is a time of transition (过渡) for young adults. It may be the first time students have the freedom to determine how to spend their time, but this freedom comes with competing interests from learning, social events and even sleep.
A multi-institutional team of researchers conducted the first study to evaluate how the nightly sleeping time in the early term affects first-year college students’ end-of-term grade point average (GPA). The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist devices like smartwatch to monitor and record their sleep patterns. The researchers found that students in the study sleep on average 6.5 hours a night.
More surprisingly, the researchers found that students who receive less than 6 hours of sleep experienced a pronounced decline in academic performance. In addition, each hour of sleep lost corresponded to a 0.07 decrease in end-of-term GPA.
“Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory,” said Creswell, the William S. Dietrich Ⅱ Professor in Psychology. “Here we show how this work translates to humans. The less nightly sleep a first-year college student gets at the beginning of the school term predicts lower GPA at the end of the term, some five to nine weeks later. Lack of sleep may be hurting students’ ability to learn in their college classrooms.”
“Once you start dipping below 6 hours, you are starting to accumulate (积累) massive sleep debt that can damage a student’s health and study habits, hurting the whole system,” said Creswell. “Most surprising to me was that no matter what we did to make the effect go away, it lasted.”
“A popular belief among college students is to value studying more or partying more over nightly sleep,” said Creswell. “Our work here suggests that there are potentially real costs to reducing your nightly sleep on your ability to learn and achieve in college. There’s real value in planning for the importance of nightly sleep.”
12. How did the researchers get their data
A. By doing various experiments.
B. By conducting a questionnaire survey.
C. By recording the subjects’ sleep.
D. By referring to a previous study.
13. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “dipping” in paragraph 5
A. Rising. B. Putting. C. Adjusting. D. Dropping.
14. What does Creswell expect students to do
A. Schedule nightly sleep wisely. B. Focus on learning and academy.
C. Pay off accumulated sleep debt. D. Value studying more over partying.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Students are severely in need of sleep
B. Nightly sleep is key to students success
C. Lacking sleep can damage a student’s health
D. College students arrange time unreasonably
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中的“The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist devices like smartwatch to monitor and record their sleep patterns. (这项研究评估了三所大学五个学科的600多名一年级学生。学生们戴着智能手表之类的手腕设备来监测和记录他们的睡眠模式)”可知,参与研究的受试者佩戴设备来监测和记录睡眠模式,为研究人员提供数据。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后的“below 6 hours (6小时以下)”和下文“you are starting to accumulate (积累) massive sleep debt that can damage a student’s health and study habits, hurting the whole system (你开始积累大量的睡眠债,这会损害学生的健康和学习习惯,损害整个系统)”可知,此处讨论睡眠不足持续累积导致的后果。由此推知,应该是睡眠时间下降到6小时以下时,睡眠会持续不足,因此dipping意为“下降”,与drop意思一致。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中Creswell所说的话“Our work here suggests that there are potentially real costs to reducing your nightly sleep on your ability to learn and achieve in college. There’s real value in planning for the importance of nightly sleep. (我们在这里的研究表明,减少夜间睡眠对你的学习能力和在大学里取得成就有潜在的实际代价。规划夜间睡眠的重要性是很有价值的)”可知,Creswell认为减少夜间睡眠时间危害很大,希望学生们可以合理规划夜间睡眠。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中的“Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory (动物研究表明,睡眠对学习和记忆至关重要)”和“Here we show how this work translates to humans. (在这里,我们展示了这项工作是如何转换到人类身上的)”可知,文章围绕一项针对一年级大学生夜间睡眠的研究展开,该研究表明,夜间睡眠对学生非常重要,其时间的减少往往会导致学生的学习成绩和学习能力下降,且这种影响很难逆转。因此,B项“每晚的睡眠是学生成功的关键”符合文章大意,最适合作为标题。故选B项。

A young football player has gone popular because of a beautiful reason.
Grayson Bonomo was playing in a football game at Northeast Guilford High School when the unthinkable happened. Any player knows there is a risk of injury because sport is a physical activity, but it is still scary when an actual injury occurs.
The football player was trying his best to secure the first down of the game and was determined to make it for his team. However, the ball was flying too high, and he could not get to the ball on time. As Grayson went for the ball, another player crashed with him. The young man hit the other player so strongly that he was knocked unconscious for a brief moment of time after the crash.
It was a frightful moment, and everyone in the crowd was watching everything unfold before their eyes in anxious breath.
Grayson finally opened his eyes and was tended by the medics (医护人员), who immediately arrived on the scene.
Knowing how one exciting game could turn into a medical emergency in just a snap was terrifying. While everyone was panicking, one of Grayson’s teammates stepped away to do something else. Dillon Goedeck moved from the space where the medics were working on Grayson and away from the other team members. Seeing his teammate hurt so badly, he wanted to have his own space, and that was for a good reason with a mixed feeling of anxiety and worry. He recognized the importance of allowing the medics to do their job without distractions, and he also needed time to process his own emotions. It’s natural for teammates and spectators to feel a wide range of emotions during such incidents, and Dillon’s action demonstrated his maturity and thoughtfulness. At the same time, the other players of both sides followed Dillon and stepped away to make space for the medics. The football community stood beside Grayson, offering support and well-wishes for his recovery.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】参考范文:
But Dillon didn’t think he could just stand there and do nothing. He wanted to help in his own way and got his teammate back on his feet. A flash of inspiration came into his eyes that he could pray sincerely for his injured teammate. So he kept away from the crowd, quiet with his eyes closed, holding the football on the ground and praying. Someone from the stands saw Dillon and decided to take a photo of him. Dillon was so absorbed that he didn’t even realize he was being photographed.
The photo reached Colleen Siler, Grayson’s mom, who decided to share the image online. She was unsure who took the shot, but she was happy that someone thought of taking such an inspiring photo. It was a powerful photo that she wanted the world to know. As Grayson’s mother, Colleen is grateful that her son has a friend like Dillon, who would immediately pray for him in times of need. The photo was liked by thousands of people who were moved by the young man’s prayer for his injured friend. It is inspiring to know that someone like Dillon is out there. The world needs more people like him.

When Amelia Lisowe was told she was too young to volunteer, she decided to make a difference by herself. The Benton, Arkansas native launched her own non-profit, Lisowe’s Lights, in 2018, donating over 500 nightlights to kids in the Arkansas foster (寄养) system that year alone.
4. What was the reason for Amelia’s being refused as a volunteer
A. Her young age. B. Her slow reaction.
C. Her busy schedule. D. Her little experience.
5. How can nightlights help kids in foster homes

C. To decide what she would do next. D. To show how nightlights help kids.

“Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory” said Creswell, the William S.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
