Every Saturday morning, 14-year-old Mia goes to the community center to help old people. She started doing this six months ago, after her grandma moved to live with her family.
Mia’s grandma often talked about how lonely she felt when she lived alone. “Many old people in the neighborhood don’t have family nearby,” her grandma said. “They just need someone to talk to or help with small things.” Mia decided to do something. She joined the center’s “Help for Elders” group.
Every week, Mia helps Mrs. Lee, an 82-year-old lady. Mrs. Lee loves reading, but her eyesight is not good. So Mia reads newspapers and storybooks to her. Sometimes, she helps Mrs. Lee water her plants or buy vegetables. Mrs. Lee often tells Mia stories about her young life—like how she learned to dance or traveled to other cities. Mia loves these stories; they make her feel like she’s learning about history.
Last month, the community center held a small party for the old people. Mia helped organize it. She and other volunteers sang songs and played games with the elders. Mrs. Lee danced with Mia, and they laughed a lot. “This is the happiest day I’ve had in a long time,” Mrs. Lee told Mia.
Mia says helping old people makes her feel great. “It’s not hard to do small things for others,” she said. “But these small things can bring so much joy. I will keep doing this as long as I can.”
1. Why did Mia start helping old people
A. Because she needed money. B. Because her grandma told her about their loneliness.
C. Because her teacher asked her to do so. D. Because she wanted to learn dancing.
2. What does Mia often do for Mrs. Lee

A. She cooked food for the old people. B. She organized the party with other volunteers.
C. She invited her friends to join the party. D. She told stories about her life.
4. What can we learn from Mia’s story
A. Helping others can bring joy to both sides. B. Old people don’t like talking to young people.
C. It’s difficult to help old people. D. Only volunteers can help old people.
B篇
Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in autumn It’s not just for beauty—there’s a science behind it.
Leaves are like small “food factories” for trees. During spring and summer, leaves make food for the tree using sunlight, water, and air. This process is called photosynthesis. To do this, leaves have a green substance called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color, and it helps catch sunlight for photosynthesis.
When autumn comes, the days get shorter and the weather gets colder. Trees know it’s time to get ready for winter. They stop making food, so they don’t need as much chlorophyll. The chlorophyll in the leaves starts to break down and disappear.
As the green chlorophyll goes away, other colors in the leaves start to show. For example, some leaves have yellow or orange substances called carotenoids—these are the same substances that make carrots orange! Other leaves have red or purple substances called anthocyanins. These colors were hidden by the green chlorophyll during spring and summer.
The color of autumn leaves depends on the tree type and the weather. For example, maple leaves often turn bright red or orange, while birch leaves turn yellow. Sunny days and cool nights make the colors brighter, because the cool nights stop the breakdown of anthocyanins, and the sunny days help make more of them.
Next time you see autumn leaves, you’ll know the science behind their beautiful colors!
1. What is chlorophyll used for
A. It makes leaves red or purple. B. It helps trees store water in winter.
C. It helps leaves make food for trees. D. It protects leaves from cold weather.
2. Why do leaves lose their green color in autumn
A. Because trees stop making food and chlorophyll breaks down.
B. Because the sun is too strong and kills chlorophyll.
C. Because leaves fall off the trees quickly.
D. Because trees need more chlorophyll in winter.
3. What makes carrots orange
A. Chlorophyll. B. Carotenoids. C. Anthocyanins. D. Sunlight.
4. Which weather makes autumn leaves brighter
A. Rainy days and warm nights. B. Sunny days and cool nights.
C. Cloudy days and cold nights. D. Windy days and hot nights.
