Many animals move from one place to another once a year. They migrate(迁徙) to find food, a partner, or warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly(帝王蝶).
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful butterflies try to travel about 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently(最近), no one knew how they did this.
Scientists have now found the answer. The monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to tell the right place of the sun. These two pieces of information make it be able to decide the way to go. Finally, it succeeds in reaching the places where it will spend the winter.
The monarch's population has dropped by 90 per cent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason. They cut down trees and use chemicals(化学品) to kill the plants so that monarch caterpillars(幼虫) may get hurt.
The research on the monarch has led more people to pay attention to it. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there will be enough plants for it. The more we know about it, the more we can do to make a better environment.
