Years ago, Marie Massa noticed a deserted (被遗弃的) land near her son's school in Lincoln Height, Los Angeles, It was overgrown with weeds (杂草) and covered by trash, and the area seemed hopeless.s However, Massa found a kind of native flowers growing through the ruins. Inspired, she imagined a thriving plant garden.
Today, all kinds of native plants grow in where trash once piled. It takes Massa three mornings a week to weed and water to create the 380-foot-long garden. What began as a personal act has grown into a community-supported habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds. At first the area was completely blocked with weeds and electrical equipment which were thrown away. Massa determined to clear the trash and bring in water to repurpose the land. She contacted the neighbors and city officials to get permission to stop weeding rudely that harmed the native plants.
After winter rains the next year, wildflower seeds (种子) which she planted were coming up. It showed the soil (土壤) can support the growth of plants. Because of the donations and a $500 fund, she could plant over 400 native species, including sage, monkey flowers, and milkweeds, which are important for endangered monarch butterflies. The work wasn't easy. In summer, high temperatures killed half the plants, so they needed to be replanted. Massa often worked alone, though the neighbors and her young son offered help to her occasionally. She stressed that creating a native garden demands long-time care, “If you don't water, weed, and maintain it, you might as well throw plants in the trash bin.'
Now in its third spring, this area is filled with color and life. Massa aims to encourage the reuse of deserted spaces but reminds that meaningful change doesn't happen overnight. For Massa, the garden is more than beauty一it's a statement. "People here don't know native plants," she said.“This shows their value一for wildlife, for us, for the future."

A. Humorous and honest. B. Helpful and determined.

We've all had the experience. We're reading along and suddenly realize that although our eyes are scanning the words on the page, nothing is actually registering. Minutes pass before we realize that we’ve lost the plot entirely
In classrooms, students tend to experience this drift (偏移) in attention while reading texts that are challenging-- the sorts of passages middle schoolers and high schoolers might encounter in science, math, or history,
In a 2024 study of“mindless reading,” researchers from the University of Wu rzburg tracked the reading speed and attention of undergraduates studying a complex science text. At multiple points during the exercise, prompts (提示) appeared asking students“Was your mind wandering when you read the last sentence " Students confirmed multiple instances of loss of attention.
Researchers found that mindless reading happened if there there were variations (变化)
in reading speed, lingering (逗留) on the same passage for long periods, and skipping words. Mindless reading also predicted ,poorer performance on later tests.
But these problems are not insolvable. The University of Wu rzburg researchers also concluded that a when students were trained to recognize when they lost track of sentence-level information or got stuck on passages一and were taught strategies to "plan, monitor, and regulate their reading”they were able to successfully re route their attention.
To convince students of the importance of effective reading strategies, it's important to explain the long-term benefits of sticking through complex texts. For example, learning how to make sense of a technical science text may help if students decide to work in engineering. The skills they use to make sense of a history text may help in future legal careers. Try to make it clear, literacy expert Timothy Shanahan says, that when we teach students how8 Rush through difficult texts,“what we re really doing is showing them how to gain access to all of these different fields in our society."
28. When do students tend to lose their focus while reading
A. When the reading text is long. B. When they are in a classroom.
C.When the reading material is difficult.
D. When they are middle or high schoolers.
29. Which of the following is a signal of“mindless reading"
A Reading too quickly. B. Poor performance on tests.
C. Changes in reading speed. D. Spending much time reading.
30. What should students do if they experience“mindless reading"
A. Change the reading materials.
B. Get to know why they get stuck on passages.
C.Learn to nonce when their attention wanders.
D. Pay more attention to sentence-level information.
31.What is Shanahan's attitude to helping students push through difficult texts
A. Favorable. B. Cautious C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

In an analysis of 16 cities of around the world, those that saw the biggest temperature
rises over the years also had more rat complaints over time, researchers reported in Science
Advances.
Jonathan Richardson, a researcher of the University of Richmond in Virginia, together

An extra Week or two foraging (觅食) outdoors.. that's, in some cases. adequate for a rat to reproduce one more time," Warming weather also means fewer opportunities to control rat populations.“There used to be a rodent (啮齿动物) season: Rats sought shelter indoors in winter with lower birth rates, allowing professionals to take advantage of the chance to control. Now it's all year round," says Bobby Corrigan, a rodentologist.
“When humans and rats share space, there are rally a variety coming along,"says Niamh Quinn, a human-wildlife interactions advisor at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources in Irvine. Rats not only make people jump and scream,They cause around 27 billion dollars in damage each year in the United States, and the world spends 500 million dollars per year fighting a losing battle against the creature.higher temperatures may make matters worse.
“At some point there's going to be hopefully not,but potentially the perfect storm, where have all these increasing population ,all these rodent but not hee enough tools in our toolbox to manage”,said Bobby.

How to Love Your Parents

normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. 36

My pet dog Sam and I had been volunteering in a shelter that offered support or healing for women and children in need. Sam played her role as a therapy (治疗) dog,Every Saturday, Sam and I would visit and play with the children who were staying in the shelter with their mothers.
A young mother and her 4-year-old son had come to the shelter after surviving a car crash. They had been in the shelter for several weeks, and the little boy, William, hadn't spoken since their arrival. Every week, William and his mother would come to watch but never participate. We had tried to engage with William when he first arrived at the shelter,
but he never 1eft his mother's arms. No one was able to talk to him, come near him, or even
touch him.
William and his mother had been watching us from their regular spot in the comer of the yard far away from everyone. One day, his mother told me that, while they were watching, she heard William softly say,“Sam." She was shocked to hear him speak. A moment later, William began squirming (动来动去) in her arms, and the mother did something I never thought I'd sce: She put him down. William didn't walk far from her reach, but he did take a few steps away from her, standing by himself as he watched Sam play with the other children.
Two weeks passed, and each time we came, the same thing happened. William would
come out to the yard, stand on his own, and watch Sam with the other children, no words,
no playing, just observing.
One rainy day, we were unable to play outside, so we held the play session in a room.
William stood there with his mother. He left his mother's side and went to a small area away from all the other children and Sam. Sam's attention shifted from the other children to William.

I whispered to Sam,“Go easy with him. This is a big step for him." She looked in my eyes, and I knew she understood. She slowly got up from her spot and went over to William. She stood halfway for a moment, and their eyes locked on one another. William smiled, and Sam walked a few steps closer. He giggled again, and she did the same. This continued until Sam had reached his side. Then came a most amazing scene: The two of them sat in silence, with Sam's head nestled in William's lap. William slowly touched her fur, like two old friends. When the play time came to an end, William kissed Sam on her head, and she licked his face.
The next weekend, we saw an obvious change in William. He had begun speaking during the week. He would leave their room several times to the yard, each time walking and sitting on his own. He allowed staff members to talk to him. As the children headed to the yard for playing games, he would join them. Soon it was time for William and his mother to leave the shelter to start their new life. On the last day, William's mother told me that thanks to the healing from Sam's love. Willianm was adjusting well to his new school and their new apartment. I was more than proud of Sam.
