Amazing castles around the world
Trakai Island Castle
Famous for its special location and architecture, Trakai Island Castle sits on an island in Lake Galve, one of Lithuania’s deepest lakes. Construction of the castle began in the 14th century and it served as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. While it fell into ruin during the 17th century, it was successfully rebuilt in 1951. Reached by a wooden bridge, it appears like something out of a dream. In winter, the lake freezes over to become a magical natural skating location.
Balmoral Castle
If you’ve watched The Crown on Netflix, you'll likely be familiar with Balmoral Castle, the Scottish retreat(退隐处) the late Queen Elizabeth II was fond of. Built by Queen Victoria and her husband, Balmoral is a memorial to the way in which the British Royal Family bought into the fashionable 19th-century cult (热潮) of the Scottish Highlands. The grounds are open to visitors on select days.
Castello Sforzesco
Even if you only have a day in Milan, make sure to stop by Castello Sforzesco, which was the center of cultural life in Milan for several centuries. In its present era, it's part museum, part urban park, and part architectural wonder. The castle also houses several famous artworks. A visit to the museum will allow you to see Michelangelo's last sculpture, Pieta. It is no less attractive than Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece nearby, Sala delle Asse.
Leeds Castle
Leeds Castle, which is confusingly located in the southern county of Kent rather than the northern city of Leeds, is a stalwart (忠实成员) on the filming location scene, having featured in The Moonraker and Doctor Who. In recent years though, Leeds Castle served as one of the many British filming locations for Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
21.What is special about Trakai Island Castle
A. It is surrounded by water. B. It is the oldest castle in Lithuania.
C. It stands as an architectural wonder. D. It offers water sports activities to visitors.
22.Where can you appreciate Michelangelo’s final work
A. In Trakai Island Castle. B. In Balmoral Castle.
C. In Castello Sforzesco. D. In Leeds Castle.
23. What do Balmoral Castle and Leeds Castle have in common

When Sandra Mejia received news in 2023 that her beloved plant store, Plant Chica, had to close within 90 days, her heart sank. The store—first opened as a pop-up store in 2018 and later turned into a greenhouse in a repurposed auto body shop—had become a gathering spot for locals. Although business was slow during the winter of 2023, Mejia was always feeling positive about the store because having a physical store was her dream.“We were having a really hard time letting go of it,” said Mejia. “I felt like I was never going to find anything as special as that space.”
But hope arrived unexpectedly. A community organization read about her story and reached out. Robbie Lee, from a local nonprofit organization, thought Mejia might be a good fit for what his organization was trying to build in Leimert Park. “She seemed to have some strong connection to the South L.A. community," Lee explained. He believed Mejia’s passion matched their vision for a cultural center in Los Angeles. So, he decided to help her find a new place.
After viewing several locations, Mejia discovered a suitable place. In late2024, the new Plant Chica opened. The redesigned greenhouse, with gravel paths and a weather-resistant dome (圆屋顶), became an instant favorite. The new space is special for another reason: The open space allows Mejia to more easily facilitate the community events and cooperation she is known for.
When Amorette Brooms, a fellow small business owner, faced the closure of her business, Mejia offered her free space at Plant Chica. This action turned into a sustainable model: currently, four local marketers operate their businesses rent-free within the greenhouse. “This model gives small businesses a chance to grow," Brooms said. For Mejia, Plant Chica is more than a plant store. It's proof that when people come together, beautiful things grow.
Reflecting on her journey, Mejia shared, “My son cut the ribbon at both stores. That's the lesson - when things get tough, don't give up. Find new paths forward.”
24. How did Sandra Mejia feel about the news in 2023
A. Excited about making a change. B. Depressed and completely at a loss.
C. Indifferent due to slow winter sales. D. Relieved to end the struggling business.
25.What made Robbie Lee determined to help Mejia
A. Her knowledge of gardening. B. Her chance of drawing visitors.
C. Her cultural ties and community spirit. D. Her experience in running businesses.
26.What is the key benefit of Mejia’s rental model according to Brooms
A. It greatly increases Plant Chica’s profits. B. It makes her store a popular check-in spot.
C. It promotes competition among businesses. D. It helps small businesses to survive and grow.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Plant Chica’s Rebirth: Unity and Hope B. A Greenhouse’s Architectural Transformation
C. A New Running Model for Plant Chica D. Surviving Challenges: Small Businesses in Crisis

Book subscription services are magic. After a few clicks on the Internet, new books, selected by talented curators (策划商), turn up at your door—often with special editions and unique designs. In a world filled with choices and trends, not only is the choosing done for you, but you'll often end up with a uniquely curated, valuable bookshelf collection. This is why services like FairyLoot and OwlCrate have gained significant followings.
Now, some subscription services are taking it a step further by publishing their own books. In January, FairyLoot announced cooperation with Transworld(企鹅兰登书屋旗下的出版品牌). Last week, OwlCrate launched its own publishing wing, OwlCrate Press.Jordan Fleming, head of publishing at OwlCrate, described the traditional publishing industry as “broken” and said the new wing aims to address some of the issues the industry faces.
Which issues they're seeking to address is unclear, but curating is not the same as publishing. Quality and influence are two different things. Could this mark a potentially huge shift in the industry
“Book boxes and subscription services are hugely valuable to publishers,” says Jon Petre, an editor at Profile Books.“Books can get a significant guaranteed sale on the publication day through them. A big order of instant sales can land an author straight on the bestseller list.” Authors Elizabeth and Helen, who write under the pen name Elizabeth Helen, credit their cooperation with FairyLoot for boosting their careers. “They have developed a large fan base in the UK through editions sold by FairyLoot," they said.
However, some argue that publishing their own books could affect the magic of subscription services. You can consider this transformation an equivalent (等同物) of Netflix - a media company - launching original works instead of merely curating them. Has that been a success Not entirely. While it presents new opportunities for individuals, it also presents monopolies (垄断) at large.
28.Which of the following is the main advantage of book subscription services
A. Direct author-reader interactions. B. Mass promotion of popular books.
C. Lower prices than traditional bookstores. D. Personalized curation and unique services.
29. What might drive Owl Crate to start publishing books
A. The hope to attract more readers.
B. The demand for special editions and designs.
C. The problems in current publishing systems.
D. The invitation from publishers for cooperation.
30.Why does the author quote remarks from different people in paragraph 4
A. To confirm the value of subscription services.
B. To question the efficiency of traditional publishers.
C. To show people’s doubts about subscription services.
D.To express disapproval of the new moves of the curators.
31.How would the author describe the transformation of subscription services
A. It has been a win-win move. B. It is a double-edged sword.
C. It provides individual-based service. D. It has become a popular business model.
D
At the heart of sprinting (短跑) is a simple mathematical expression: running speed is equal to step length multiplied by step frequency. “You either take longer steps or take faster steps. That's the most basic thing you can do,” says Sam Gleadhill, a strength and conditioning researcher. “The warning to that though, is that attempting to increase the number of steps you take can result in shorter steps, and the trick works the other way around too.”
Whether you rely more on step length or frequency is individual. “Guys like Christian Coleman, who are really strong and quite muscular, explode out of the block. They can accelerate (加速) for a long time, stay really low to the track for power generation, and have shorter steps. Meanwhile, guys like Bolt are taller or have a little bit more leg length, so they are taking longer steps,” says Gleadhill. Bolt finds his speed primarily through step length and ground reaction force, which is the force produced when sprinters strike the ground and increases step length.
There is a question, however, about how much step frequency can be improved. Sprint performance is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. But genetics may play a larger role in step frequency because it is related to motor neuron (运动神经元)excitability.
“By contrast, greater flexibility in the hip and other lower body muscles allows for a more extended step. And an increased range of motion in the joints enables the leg to swing forward and backward more freely, contributing to a longer step length. Dynamic stretching and mobility exercises can help improve flexibility and the range of motion,”says Vassilos, an assistant professor of biomechanics.
What can be improved is technique. Perfecting efficient sprinting technique takes years of training in movement control, stabilisation, nervous system activation and muscle usage. But there are small tweaks for sprinters to better themselves. For example, everyone can try such as bending the foot more, leaning forward during acceleration, or focusing on touching the ground for as short a time as possible.
Everyone is individual, so it is worth experimenting with which style makes you sprint fastest.
32. What is a major challenge for sprinters to improve their performance
A. Adapting flexibly to different track conditions.
B. Building up strength for explosive sprinting starts.
C. Maintaining balance while sprinting at top speed.
D. Enhancing step length and step frequency in harmony.
33. What do the examples of Coleman and Bolt indicate
A. Sprinting mechanics vary by physical build. B. Some techniques can be shared among sprinters.
C. Tall sprinters run always faster than shorter ones. D. Step frequency is more important than step length.
34. What may be Vassilos’ suggestion for sprinters
A. Prioritizing improving the step length. B. Strengthening the overall body muscles.
C.Promoting the excitability of motor neurons. D. Wiping out unfavorable environmental factors.
35. What does the underlined word “tweaks”mean in paragraph 5
A. Limitations. B. Adjustments. C. Possibilities. D. Challenges.

The habits we form during our teenage years often determine the course of our future. Many successful people built key habits during their youth that set them on a path to success. In contrast, bad habits formed during this critical period may quietly erode (损害) our potential for growth. 36
Getting lost in social media. Many teenagers fall into the trap of comparison due to overusing social media. They constantly compare themselves to those seemingly perfect online persons. 37 It's important to remember that everyone's journey is different. You should recognize and value your own progress and achievements.
38 Teenagers often feel a strong need to be accepted by their friends. This can lead to an unhealthy focus on appearances. They may try to look "cool" at the expense of personal growth. However, most people are too busy with their own lives to notice yours. Instead of striving (努力) to impress others, focus on improving yourself.
Procrastinating (拖延) and abandoning goals. Procrastination can easily become a habit. 39 One common reason why teens let go of their goals is the desire for instant approval from others. But pursuing short-term approval often comes at the cost of long-term success. Learn to enjoy the journey of working toward your goals — it’s the process, not just the outcome, that shapes your character.
If you’re serious about breaking bad habits and building better ones, consider reading Atomic Habits by James Clear or The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. 40 The world offers countless opportunities, and you have hidden potential within you. Don’t let bad habits stand in the way of the extraordinary future you’re capable of achieving.
A. Refusing to accept responsibilities.
B. Caring too much about appearances.
C. It steals your valuable time and weakens your resolve.
D. Most apps are designed to keep you coming back for more.
E. In fact, social media often presents a polished version of reality.
F. This guide will help you recognize some bad habits and offer mindset tips.
G. Both offer powerful frameworks for understanding and reshaping behavior.

Grandpa Miller and six-year-old Timmy were always busy at their shared workbench. Under Grandpa's gentle guidance, Timmy carefully polished a small wooden dog that they had made together for a long time, proud to be learning "real work" from Grandpa.
Their joy also spread around the big dinner table. Timmy kept talking to Grandpa. "Will the dog stand firmly, Grandpa " "Sure! I sanded it SUPER smooth!" Grandpa responded gently.
Across the table sat Timmy's father, Ben. He bent over his laptop, his eyebrows frowned (皱). The joy of the grandfather and grandson seemed to escape him. "Quarterly reports are due tomorrow," he replied to his wife Sarah absent-mindedly, who had just reminded him of the delicious potatoes. He grabbed a bite, his eyes sliding back to the laptop, blind to the warmth around him. When he reached for the bowl, intending to take a quick sip (抿), his arm knocked it over. Some hot soup spilled (洒) onto the table.
"Be careful!" Sarah said softly. She grabbed a cloth and started to clean the spill quickly. Ben was wiping his laptop when some soup spilled on his trousers. "Oh, annoying! The harder I try to get this done quickly, the more things go wrong!" said he, getting angry. Astonished, little Timmy stopped talking at once. He stared at his father quietly, not knowing what to do.
Grandpa Miller watched what happened calmly and then spoke in his low voice — the same familiar tone that used to comfort Ben when he was small. "Easy there, son," he said firmly, "The soup deserves your whole heart, so does the moment with all of us."
