For over 200 years, a group of goats lived on Santa Bárbara, an island in the northeast of Brazil. There was no fresh water on the island, but these goats survived. They lived there and moved around. Also, many of the goats had two babies at a time. That shows they were healthy. That’s really hard to believe!
No one knows for sure how the goats got to the island at first. Scientists think colonisers (殖民者) brought them to the island. They kept goats for food. When they left the island, they left the goats behind.
Scientists watched the goats for many years, but they never saw the goats drink any water. This makes them wonder, “How did these goats live there for more than 200 years ” They have different guesses about how the goats stayed alive. Some think they learnt to drink seawater. Others think they ate a plant with lots of water in it.
Not long ago, a wildlife protection group (野生动物保护组织) took the last 27 goats away from the island. They did this because the goats ate too much and caused problems for seven kinds of seabirds there. But they didn’t kill the goats. They gave them to scientists to study. Scientists hope to find out the reason why the goats could live with no water. Then they may come up with ideas to help animals living in dry places.
