My dad liked to get things done quickly. He also got up very early every day, even at weekends and holidays. But my mum was different — she liked to stay up late at night and sleep in the next day.
One Saturday morning, Dad got up early and looked for something to do. Everyone else was still sleeping. He saw our porch (门廊) and decided it needed new paint. So he went to the shop to buy paint and started painting right away.
We don't know how Dad chose the paint colour. Maybe someone helped him. Maybe not. But the thing is, Dad was colour-blind. He couldn't see colours the way most people do.
When my brother and I got up, we went outside and saw Dad painting the porch a bright pink (粉色) — super bright! Feeling surprised, we ran to get Mum. She came outside and saw the porch. "It's pink," she said. Dad looked confused (困惑的). "Is it " he asked. We all nodded. "It's a really bright pink!" we said. Dad looked at the porch again. "It is a bit bright, isn't it " he said.
Cars going by were slowing down to see. Some people even honked (鸣笛). Dad smiled and said hello to them.
"Should I paint over it " he asked.
Mum couldn't stop laughing. "No, we'll keep it. We love it as long as you love it."
From then on, everyone in town gave directions like this: "Turn left when you see the pink porch!"
And that's how our porch became the most famous porch in town.

One of the common problems between parents and teenagers is chores (杂务) around the house. Studies show that only 20% of mothers and 10% of fathers are happy with the amount (数量) of housework that their teenagers do.
What affects the amount of housework that teenagers do There is more than one factor (因素). Teenagers with mothers who have jobs usually do more housework at home. Also, teenagers from large families tend to (常常会) do more housework. For boys, how much housework their fathers do affects a lot.
At the age of 7 or 8, girls and boys spend similar amounts of time on housework. But as they get older, girls tend to do more housework than boys. At 15 or 16 years old, teenagers usually want to spend more time with friends or in after - school activities, so they do less housework than before.
The chores that parents give their children often show the difference between boys and girls. For example, boys are often asked to do outdoor chores like shopping, cleaning the car and taking out the rubbish. But girls often do chores at home such as kitchen work, house cleaning, and taking care of young children. Probably the best way to encourage teenagers to take on different chores is by setting an example. Boys may be ready to do some "women's chores" if they see their fathers doing them.
