In the livestreaming (直播) channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang, 74 years old, teaches children Pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. But this time, her students are mostly adults.
In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education career through livestreaming online. She opened her livestreaming account in May 2021 and offered free Pinyin courses designed for illiterate (不识字的) adults ever since.
“Many illiterate adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate. I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said. Considering that most of the adult students have to make time to attend the lessons, Yang holds two livestream classes every day starting at 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. Her livestreaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy. Now she has nearly 400,000 followers on the short video platform.
Zhang Mei is among the students who benefit from Yang’s livestream lessons. She was born and raised in the countryside and had never been to school. She found illiteracy brought challenges to her city life. She couldn’t find suitable work. She also couldn’t fill in forms or read the assignment from teachers for her children. She watches Yang’s livestreaming whenever there is spare time. Now she can read Chinese characters if they are marked with Pinyin and knows how to write her name. She has also found a job.
Yang said she tried her best to figure out what ways the students could learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.
4. What has Yang been doing after her retirement
A. Designing classes for illiterate adults at schools.
B. Engaging herself in relieving adult illiteracy online.
C. Helping people from the countryside find suitable jobs.
D. Promoting educational products on a short video platform.
5. Why does Yang hold two livestream classes in two different time periods
A. To finish her teaching plan on time.
B. To offer convenience to her students.
C To meet the requirements of platforms.
D. To attract more followers for her channel.
6. Why is Zhang Mei mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To praise her efforts made in overcoming adult illiteracy.
B. To show the popularity of Yang Weiyun’s teaching channel.
C. To present the challenges facing illiterate adults in modern city life.
D. To highlight the effects Yang’s livestream lessons bring to her viewers.
7. Which of the following can best describe Yang Weiyun
A. Strict. B. Humble. C. Dedicated. D. Easygoing.

Picture two people sitting in a movie theater, both watching the screen: Are they seeing the same thing Or is the movie playing out differently in each of their minds Researchers from the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) have found that it’s the latter. It turns out that viewers experience different versions of the same film in their brains, and these differences can be predicted by their unique eye movements.
Just like our bodies are made up of the same basic parts but vary from person to person, the same is true for our brains and their activity patterns. Neuroscientists use functional magnetic resonance imaging (磁共振成像) and machine learning to make these brain activity patterns comparable across individuals. For about a decade now, these techniques have allowed researchers to “translate” activation patterns between different brains.
Petra Borovska and Professor Ben de Haas used this technology to explore how individual eye movements affect our perception. They examined how well one person’s brain activity could predict another’s while 19 volunteers watched the same movie — either freely or passively staring at the center of the screen. Compared to passive viewing, natural eye movements led to much stronger activation in the brain’s visual centers. However, these activations were also more individual, making it harder to match one person’s brain activity to another’s.
“Traditionally, we’ve thought of eye movements as a simple response to what’s happening in front of us,” says de Haas. “But recent research shows that’s not the whole story. Eye movements are as unique as personality characteristics. Some people focus more on faces, while others are drawn to text or other elements,” Borovska adds. “We speculate that these individual viewing habits might create a unique ‘world’ in each person’s mind. Now we know that’s true!”
The team is now exploring how eye movements develop over a person’s lifetime and how they affect our understanding of scenes and daily tasks. “There is still so much to learn,” says de Haas.
8. How does the author lead in the topic of the text
A. By giving a definition. B. By drawing a conclusion.
C. By making a comparison. D. By imagining a situation.
9. What is the result of passive viewing according to Petra and de Haas
A. Simpler response. B. Greater perception.
C. Weaker activation. D. Better brain activity.
10. What does the underlined word “speculated” in paragraph 4 mean
A Guessed. B. Concluded. C. Confirmed. D. Identified.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. New techniques translate activation patterns between brains.
B. A breakthrough has been made in magnetic resonance imaging.
C. Eye movements make it harder to predict others’ brain activities.
D. Eye movements create different versions of a movie in the brain.

Out in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 60 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, lie the Canary Islands. In the 1950s, the boom in package tourism showed promise as a new cash crop. But while the Canary Islands had the sunshine, warm climate and ease of access from Europe needed for this new industry, they were missing a vital element — picture postcard sandy beaches.
So the developers on Tenerife in the Canary Islands constructed a breakwater (防洪堤) over half a mile long. And then, from the Western Sahara on Africa’s northwest coast, they shipped in 270,000 tons of sand. By 1973, the project was complete. As anticipated, tourists arrived. Now, along the engineered beach, rows and rows of tourists relax on beach chairs under umbrellas or walk across soft sand to cool down in the water.
Unanticipated was what their presence gave to angel sharks, one of the world’s most endangered fish species, home. The gentle wind creates tiny waves on the water’s surface, which is a magical cover for an angel shark nursery. Female angel sharks regularly migrate to these ideally sheltered waters to give birth to pups (幼小动物), who remain in the shallows for about a year. Feeding on small fishes, they grow to around the same length as a newborn human baby. As a result, angel sharks are increasingly being seen.
Surveys have shown that other beaches in the Canary Islands are also potential nursery sites. However, most of them have been remade to make them more attractive to people. So, the beach of Tenerife stands out among its counterparts.
Normally, massive, environmentally disruptive projects are bad for wildlife. But what’s clear is that after the breakwater was built and the sand arrived, people followed, and in the calm, shallow waters they began to see baby angel sharks. And unlike the cases where an association between humans and wildlife ended in conflict and dead animals, this time it led to conservation.
12. Why did the developers on Tenerife carry out the project
A. To build a base for shipping. B. To fight against the rising sea.
C. To protect the island’s ecosystem. D. To promote the local tourism industry.
13. What was an unexpected result of the project
A. It made a magical tourist attraction. B. It boosted an increase in shark sightings.
C. It caused the disappearance of some fishes. D. It created conflict between sharks and tourists.
14. What is the author’s attitude toward Tenerife’s engineered beach
A. Appreciative. B. Intolerant. C. Ambiguous. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To highlight the financial benefits of tourism.
B. To explain the situation of endangered species.
C. To introduce potential human-wildlife coexistence.
D. To emphasize the significance of wildlife conservation.

April has been a vet(兽医) for many years. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig(豚鼠).
She was in tears and asked April to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. April examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. The pig looked young. Probably, it was already sick when it was sold to the girl. The vet saw many children’s tears, and each time she felt awful. But she always found strength to say that she couldn’t save the pet.
However, this time she looked at the girl and couldn’t say anything. April saw how simply the girl was dressed and thought that her family didn’t make a lot of money. Therefore, the pig wasn't just a pet for her, but a real treasure. “Tell me your phone number, so I can call you after the operation,” April said. “I’ll give you my grandmother’s phone number, because I live with her. My parents were gone. Grandma said that they had gone somewhere far and for a long time. By the way, they gave me the pig before leaving,” the girl said. April wrote down the number, and when the girl left the clinic, she burst into tears. She realized her parents had died and the girl didn't know the truth yet. How could she tell her that her guinea pig was going to die April looked at the animal helplessly and wondered what she could do. Suddenly she came up with an idea. But before doing it she put the guinea pig to sleep, and went to the nearest pet store during lunchtime. She wanted to buy exactly the same guinea pig and give it to the girl.

【答案】范文
However, finding it wasn’t so easy. The sick pet was black with a white spot on the nose, which was uniquely uncommon. Her attempt to find nearby in vain, a flush of disappointment swept over April. However, at the thought of the girl’s misty eyes, April continuously went to extraordinary lengths to find a matching pig. Fortunately, her persistent efforts paid off. In a store 8 kilometers away from her clinic, she found an identical pig. Hardly had she returned to the clinic when she called the girl, “Honey, good news for you. Dorothy has pulled through and you can take her home!” On hearing the news, the girl hurried to the pet store with her grandmother.
Her grandmother understood everything, but the girl didn’t notice the switch. Eyes twinkling with excitement, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks.
