Here are some of the upcoming events of Human-centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) at Stanford University.
Privacy and the Power of Unknowing
Lowry Pressly
April 9 12:00 PM-1:15 PM
In an era when information is treated as a form of power and self-knowledge an unqualified good, the value of what remains unknown is often overlooked. By rethinking privacy beyond the framework of data protection, Pressly challenges us to reclaim the social, psychological and political importance of limits to knowledge — and to better appreciate the power of the unknown to sustain the human world as a meaningful and livable space.
Robotics in a Human-centered World: Innovations and Implications
Allison Okamura, Dorsa Sadigh and Karen Liu
April 1 8:30 AM-6:30 PM
The conference will give you a deeper understanding of how researchers, engineers, social scientists and policymakers can work together for the development of robotics. This year, HAI is also working with the Stanford Robotics Center to bring interactive robot demonstrations.
Synthetic (合成的) Data Sets: Use Cases for the Financial Industry
Erik Altman
May 7 12:00 PM-1:15 PM
International Business Machine (IBM) Synthetic Data Sets (SDS) have been created for use cases in the financial industry. One key focus is fraud (诈骗) and criminal activity, whose cost runs into the hundreds of billions of dollars per year or more. SDS labels many of these criminal activities, including credit card fraud, check fraud, and insurance claims fraud. SDS data provides an attractive foundation for training AI detection models.
Beyond Benchmarks: Building a Science of AI Measurement
Sanmi Koyejo
March 19 12:00 PM — 1:15 PM
The widespread use of AI systems in critical domains demands stricter approaches to evaluating their capabilities and safety. This talk presents a path toward a measurement framework that bridges established psychometric principles with modern AI evaluation needs. Through case studies in safety assessment and capability measurement, we show how this approach can enable more reliable, scalable and meaningful evaluation of AI systems.
21. When can participants enjoy interactive robot demonstrations
A. On March 19. B. On April 1. C. On April 9. D. On May 7.
22. Who are most likely to be attracted by Erik Altman’s speech
A. Those dreaming to be educators. B. Those interested in industrial robots.
C. Those caring about financial security. D. Those eager to improve public health.

While Japan, Norway and Iceland get most of the criticism for whaling, South Korea engages in whaling practices, too. South Korean fishermen are known to take advantage of a loophole (漏洞) that allows them to legally sell whale meat from animals that are accidentally caught in fishing nets.
South Korea reports an average of 80 to 100 whales as bycatch (误捕的鱼) annually to the International Whaling Commission(IWC), the organization that regulates whaling and whale conservation. The number has led conservationists and scientists to conclude that something fishy has been happening in the country. “That bycatch is about 10 times higher than that of other countries,” says Astrid Fuchs, an IWC official.
Whale hunting is banned both by South Korean law and by IWC in 1986, but whale meat remains popular in several coastal cities. Ulsan, home to the Whale Festival, is one of them. The city has been involved in whaling since the Korean Empire and Russia joined forces in the late 19th century to establish whaling bases. In this city of little more than a million people, more than a hundred restaurants serve whale meat.
Douglas MacMillan of the University of Kent published a study on bycatch trends in South Korea. “All parties are happy to take advantage of the loophole,” he wrote. “A single whale earns a fisherman up to $85,000. The meat is sold to restaurants for food, the skin is sold to factories for bags, and the fat is used to make fish oil.”
If a whale is caught as bycatch, fishermen must report the incident to the Coast Guard. It then issues a permit to allow the whale to be sold.
Aside from the bycatch loophole, illegal hunting is a problem in South Korea, too. MacMillan’s economic analysis found that the price of whale meat was falling even though demand was rising and official bycatch numbers weren’t changing.
“This suggests strongly that additional supply was coming from an illegal source,” MacMillan concluded.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “fishy” in paragraph 2
A. Important. B. Funny. C. Valuable. D. Abnormal.
25. According to the text, Ulsan is ______.
A. not allowed to sell whales as bycatch B. occupied by Russian fishermen
C. known for its whaling culture D. permitted to kill 80 to 100 whales a year
26. What does Douglas MacMillan suggest in paragraph 4
A. Most whales might not be killed by accident.
B. The price of whale meat is unreasonably high.
C. The consumption of whale meat should be banned.
D. The Coast Guard cooperates with fishermen in secret.
27. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs
A. Whales are a precious resource.
B. Illegal whaling exists in South Korea.
C. Fishermen in South Korea are very honest.
D. Accidentally killed whales should be destroyed.

Many of America’s cranberry planters might have found a new way to use their land to make money by putting up solar equipment on their farms.
Michael Wainio, a fourth-generation cranberry farmer, is one of them. He is currently working with NextSun Energy on a pilot project that will set up at least 27,000 solar panels above his three farms in Carver, Massachusetts. The project is designed to produce about 10 MW of electricity each year. NextSun says this is about the amount of power needed to supply 1,600 homes.
“I have been doing everything I can to diversify the crops, but it’s not enough,” Wainio said. “If I had not got this solar equipment, I’d be surprised if I could have made it five years.”
But one of the major US cranberry producers in Massachusetts, AD Makepeace, has said that it has no interest at this time in putting solar equipment above its cranberry farms. Its spokeswoman Linda Burke explained that the company already has solar equipment on nearly 5,000 hectares of its land. But the systems were built years ago on land not used for cranberry growing.
“We think solar panels might be a better fit for other types of agriculture,” Burke said. “If you think about cranberry, it’s way better in the open, and that’s for a reason. It needs sun.”
Data from the US Department of Agriculture shows that the prices of cranberries fell from about $58 for 45 kilograms of cranberries in 2008 to just $25 in 2018, while the cost to produce that amount of cranberries is nearly $35. Many cranberry farmers have to switch to other crops or take the risk of combining traditional farming with renewable energy technology in order to make up for losses on their cranberry farms.
Researchers around the world have studied and tested combining traditional farming with renewable energy technology. They suggest some crops in particular climates can grow well under solar panels. It remains unclear, however, how the cranberry plants will do over time.
28. What can we learn from Michael Wainio’s words
A. He has been struggling to make a profit.
B He is pessimistic about the test project.
C. He is eager to try the widely tested method.
D. He welcomes the financial help from NextSun.
29. What does AD Makepeace most probably want to do
A. Expand its solar equipment soon. B. Add cranberries to the existing solar panels.
C. Wait for the experiment results first. D. Try to replace cranberries with other crops.
30. What does paragraph 6 mainly focus on
A. Cranberry farmers’ losses. B. Risks of the new farming method.
C. The current situation in the US. D. The driving force behind the innovation.
31. How do researchers feel about the test projects
A. Disappointed. B. Uncertain. C. Excited. D. Satisfied.
D
Many of us suffer from a wish to be special. We usually assume that a special person is a better person and a special life is a better life. However, my experience has helped me to understand the high cost I have paid to be special: the extra time spent trying to impress others, the meals I was too tired to cook but I still cooked, the newspaper column that I just couldn’t stop working with...
I’ve been thinking about the cost a lot since becoming a mother. I know it is very natural to want our children to feel special, perhaps more special than others, so they can develop self-confidence. But I don’t think real self-confidence comes from being raised above others. It should come from being themselves and feeling loved for that in an ordinary way. It is not believing that they are the best and trying to be that. It is understanding that they have value for being them. It is very easy to give our children the impression that to be special, they need to try to be somebody else.
Perhaps the most valuable gift we can give them is the permission to be ordinary. Trying to be special or to live a special life can in reality take them further and further away from better ones. It can also lead them to lose sight of the precious moments of the life they are actually living.
Since I have become aware of this, I start to enjoy cooking simpler meals. I also feel much more freedom when writing this column. I feel less of a need to perform than I used to. And when I do feel that need, I can recognize it and respond differently (sometimes).
At first, it might be a little bit boring to be ordinary. Now, I’ve become much more aware of the beauty of ordinary moments that I am fortunate enough to experience every day: the naughty smiles from my daughter; the funny sounds my cat makes in the middle of the night...
32. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Cost. B. Self-confidence. C. Being themselves. D. Trying to be special.
33 What does the author do now when she feels a need to perform
A. occupy herself with her work. B. Try to hold back the desire.
C. Do what she is expected to do. D. Turn her attention to her family.
34. What does the author say about her current life
A. It is unnatural. B. It is boring. C. It is stressful. D. It is enjoyable.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Why Should We Celebrate Being Ordinary
B. Why Do Many of Us Try So Hard to Be Special
C. How Does Children’s Self-Confidence Develop
D. How Can Parents Help Kids Enjoy the Real Life

Being helpful is a virtue, but sometimes being too enthusiastic can backfire. It is a lesson I learned the hard way last summer.
The night before the summer holiday, it was raining cats and dogs. But I wasn’t bothered because Justin, Wendy, Crystal and I were texting each other about our upcoming trip to Niagara Falls. Everybody was so engaged in brainstorming ideas about what to bring along.
Justin came up with a brilliant idea. He suggested that we assign roles to each one of us.Since I was known for being careful and helpful, I was given the “babysitter” role — looking after everyone.
During the trip, I took my duty seriously. On the way, I collected trashes and guided them into every single rest station like a helpful babysitter. As Wendy and I were lining up for the washroom, I noticed a little girl got pushed out of the line, so I let her stand in front of me. When we all got back to the car, Wendy praised me as a kind-hearted babysitter for anyone, which made me feel very proud of myself.
Then I saw Crystal holding something that looked like a sun hat. Justin asked Crystal what it was, but I didn’t catch Crystal’s answer clearly. It seemed that she mentioned she was making a birthday gift for her mother.
When we arrived at our hotel, it was already six in the evening. Since no one was hungry, we decided to rest and get ready for the next day’s adventure. However, I was too excited to fall asleep and decided to go to Crystal’s room. When we listened to music together, Crystal kept weaving(编织) the thing she had been working on in the car. After a while, Crystal fell asleep.

I thought I could help her finish the sun hat.

67. One possible version:
I thought I could help her finish the sun hat. So I took the hat and retired to my own room quietly. Although I felt very tired and sleepy, I tried my best to focus on the work. At about 11:30 pm, I eventually finished it and returned it to Crystal’s room, imagining the fun to see her surprise the next morning. After that, I went to bed and fell asleep as soon as my head landed on the pillow.
But the next morning, Crystal stormed into my room. I quickly opened my eyes and saw her standing beside my bed. As soon as I admitted what I did, she started yelling at me. With tears running down her cheeks, she shouted angrily that it was not supposed to be a sun hat, but a re-usable shopping basket for her mother’s birthday. She said I ruined everything she’d planned. Although she eventually forgave me, the lesson stuck: Being helpful is a virtue. But too much of it can lead to disasters.
