It was the middle of winter about 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. I worked in a sawmill (锯木厂). As I got ready to go to work, I put bandages around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting wood for eight hours a day had caused my fingers to split (裂开) and blood could be seen in the cold, dry winter air.
That day at work was harder than normal. We were short of workers. So we had to do more work than usual. Besides, the machines kept breaking down, so we had to rush to repair them again and again. What’s worse, all the heaters (加热器) in the building had stopped working and we could see our breath as we spent hours working there!
When the workday finally ended, I walked toward the washroom, took off my work gloves, and checked my fingers. The splits were worse than ever and blood came through the bandages again. I felt so tired. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, whether things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
After driving home, I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened the front door but instead, one appeared surprisingly, smiling at me and calling “Daddy!” and put her little arms around my neck. I lifted my daughter up and my heart was filled with love. My tired body didn’t feel so tired anymore. My pains disappeared into her hug. And the joy in my heart drove the sadness away. At that moment I kissed my little girl’s face. I knew I could continue and things would get better.

When do you put your finger against your lips (嘴唇) and say “Shush!” Usually you do this when you want to tell people to be quiet.
A new sculpture (雕像) by the Hudson River is trying to deliver exactly this message: With her finger pressed to her lips, the big woman’s head seems to be calling on people in Manhattan (麦哈顿) —one of the world’s busiest (and noisiest) areas to rethink the pace (节奏) of their lives. “Stop and listen,” said its creator, the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. “Listen to the water talking to us. When it moves, the water makes a special sound, very special. Few people ever pay attention to it.”
Plensa started working on the sculpture two years ago. He calls it the most beautiful piece he has ever completed. The sculpture is so large (it’s 24 meters tall) that people all across Manhattan can see it. Some people have watched it being put together since August. They wonder why the woman seems to be shushing. “I’d say it’s telling New York City to keep this area a secret,” said a local person. “We don’t want to drive more people to work here.” Plensa says that by creating the sculpture, he is not just sending a message to Manhattan. “I’m caring about the ‘noise’ from the outside world,” he said. “Close your eyes and look inside yourself. Try to listen to your own thoughts and your own dreams in this noisy time. Everyone has an amazing amount of beauty hidden inside of them.”

We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic (精力充沛的). If you exercise several times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.
Some Westerners have problems with exercise. In the US, many people don’t have enough exercise. They have to work from morning to late afternoon, so they don’t have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. It is impossible for them to get much exercise in this way.
Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, most cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. Driving needs too much attention especially in rush hours. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don’t want to take exercise after work.
Today, many people in the West are overweight. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and keep healthy. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don’t see improvement right away, they will lose confidence and stop exercising.

七、书面表达 (本题共20分)
【70题答案】
例文:
Dear Mr. Wang,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to talk about my experience of being a volunteer.
I have done a lot of volunteer work. My most unforgettable volunteering experience was taking part in Waste-sorting Activity in our community with my friend. First, we introduced the importance of waste-sorting in our daily life. Second, we told the grandparents in our community the differences among the dustbins. Third, we told them how to sort out different kinds of waste and put them into different dustbins. We were busy all the afternoon. We were tired but we were happy because we thought we did something meaningful.
I have learnt a lot from the experience. If we sort out recyclable things before throwing them away, the amount of waste will be reduced and less waste will be burned or buried.
Best wishes.
Li Hua
