When 17-year-old Lin Hao first entered his old and damaged school library in Guizhou’s mountainous area, his rough hands touched outdated encyclopedias covered in plastic from the1990s. These books still say pandas are endangered, he whispered, remembering the modern tablets his city classmates used during a school exchange. That was when he decided to bridge the gap.
Inspired by a documentary about urban book donation programs, Lin spent his summer creating a bilingual website called Books Without Borders, using Mandarin and English to connect donors with rural schools. The platform allowed donors to send secondhand books directly to under-resourced schools, complete with tracking codes to follow each book’s journey.
Initial progress was slow. By mid-September, only 23 books had been registered. Unaffected, Lin partnered with his English teacher to create video appeals featuring students sharing their reading dreams.
Lin’s persistence shone through. A breakthrough came when a viral TikTok video showed a girl in Lin’s class receiving a donated science encyclopedia. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered, “This is the first book I’ve ever owned.”
The emotional video sparked a chain reaction. By November, over 5,000 books flooded into 12 rural schools. Local newspapers called Lin the teenage librarian, while tech-companies offered free server support. During Spring Festival, Lin received handwritten letters from remote villages — one child drew a stick-figure version of him delivering books via rainbow-colored drones.
Now displayed in the provincial museum, Lin’s original website blueprint includes a heartfelt note: Knowledge should flow like rivers, not trickle (涓流) like leaks.
