“World record broken!” On 12 August, 17-year-old Ma Jiajun from Jilin excitedly posted
this on social media, along with a picture of himself holding the certificate (证书) from
Guinness World Records.
He has set a new world record for “most consecutive skipping triples (连续三摇跳绳)” with
701. The last world record was 423, set by a Japanese 35 years ago.
Ma is more than 180 centimetres tall, but he was short and skinny in primary school. To
build a stronger body, he joined the school skipping team. At the age of 9, he took part in a
national competition and surprisingly broke a record. “My coach said I had a talent for this
sport and suggested I keep doing it,” says Ma. So he joined a skipping club and trained for six
years.
“Training was really hard. I had to practice for at least four to five hours every day,” Ma
said. “The jump rope triple has a high requirement for core strength (核心力量). Every night
when I lay on my bed, my abdomen (腹肌) and my back hurt”.
But a strong wish to break the record is keeping him going. “My favourite TV show is
Guinness China Night. I always dreamed of getting my own certificate,” he said. “It would
prove my hard work.”
After breaking the record, Ma received a lot of attention from the public. “I hope more
people can enjoy skipping, because it’s good for your health and full of fun,” Ma said. Now
he is preparing for next year’s Gaokao, with Beijing Sports University as his next goal.

“Special forces-style travel” has become the latest fashion among Chinese college students,
who spend as little money as possible to travel to as many places as they can in a short period
of time, hardly taking a break or even sleeping. However, they don’t feel tired. Videos of such
trips have been spreading on the social media, with many people online praising them for their
vitality, energy and high ability to complete their plans.
Twenty-year-old Liu Zhipeng, a second-year college student in Chongqing, took a busy trip
to Chengdu with his friends from a Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. Only in this way
won’t they miss the early class on Monday morning. He said, “We are in such a hurry because
we want to visit historical places and try different kinds of delicious food in a short period of
time. At the same time, we want to save some money for our daily life. I only spent around
400 yuan for this trip. We feel like traveling so much, as the past three years made travel very
inconvenient.”

Every day at sunrise, Ma Hongyi, a 66-year-old farmer, can be seen watching the Yuncheng
Salt Lake with his dog in Yuncheng City, North China’s Shanxi Province.
Ma still remembers the day he first saw two large pink birds flying through the water. “I had

International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species
in 2013. From that day on, Ma started his second career as a volunteer to stop humans from

Ma. “I will do my best to protect the lake so that the birds will come here every year.”

with 782 species of plants, some of which are newly recorded types in the country.
After watching the lake as a volunteer for more than four years, Ma helped the local
government protect the wildlife in 2023. “The environment of the lake is getting better and
