第一节 书面表达(15分)
Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you. I feel proud to know that you are interested in Chinese history.
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi(Maps and Records of the World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes to the world. In fact, he inspires me to major in English in college, to be a bridge between China and the world.
I believe you will also be impressed by such a remarkable figure.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(25分)
【答案】 Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!” Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. In the woods, they worked hard to find a straight tree and set to work. After cutting the tree down, they took the bark (树皮) off with a knife. After an hour, a hand-made cane was finally made, which was smooth and was just of the right size. The two brothers were sure that their grandpa would love it!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. The moment grandpa took the cane with shaking hands, he cried with joy, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack shouted, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods!” Grandpa smiled at the boys and seized the cane in his right hand, trying to stand up. To their amazement, he did it! Everyone was excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed grandfather’s eyes were wet. What a wonderful gift he had ever got!

Yu Chenrui, 31, is a fantastic maker of automata. On social media, Spooner, a famous British automata artist, applauded Yu as “a great practitioner”.
Interested in handcrafts as a boy, Yu first encountered automata at an exhibition in 2015 when he studied at the Communication University of China in Beijing. “It is like meeting a like minded friend,” Yu says, recalling the moment.
When he graduated in 2016,Yu landed a job at an advertising agency near Shichahai, where he stayed for three years, because, at that time, he was not sure whether he could make a living out of his hobby.
While working as a designer, Yu kept exploring and advancing his skills in woodcarving and mechanics. Every day, when he walked along the Shichahai Lake, he watched ducks swimming and diving. He envied, in a way, their freedom to do as they pleased.
Finally, despite the job’s good salary, it was not enough to compensate for not following his true passion. In 2018, Yu quitted his job and returned to Chengdu to open his automata workshop.
The studio he rents exceeds 200 square meters, and Yu has spent more than 300,000 yuan refurbishing it. Just after finishing the restoration, Yu didn’t know what to do and worried about cash flow. To keep himself occupied, he planted blueberries, raspberries and cherries. He watered, weeded and added fertilizer every day.
Over time, Yu’s reputation grew and his business flourished. With prices ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of yuan, his fantastic pieces of art have attracted collectors worldwide.
Many of Yu’s creations are built with a dash of wisdom, a sprinkle of humor and are inspired by observations of real life. Woodcutter and Worm originated from his own experience of finding a wormhole while cutting wood.
In an age of technology, being a maker of automata is undoubtedly a marginal sector. Yu estimates that it has attracted no more than 10 full-time makers and practitioners across the country. “I hope it can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and make them feel more connected and happier,” he says.
What is the correct development order according to the passage
a.Yu gardened to kill time.
b.Yu was into automata.
c.Yu resigned for his passion.
d.Yu’s business took off.
e.Yu redecorated his studio.
f.Yu worked for an advertising agency.
A. f-c-b-e-d-a B. f-c-b-e-a-d C. b-f-c-e-a-d D. b-f-c-e-d-a
25. What does the underlined word “marginal” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Non-mainstream. B. Commercial. C. Man-made. D. Superior.
26. What can we learn from the passage
A. Yu showed an interest in automata when he was a kid.
B. Yu’s works of art stem from his findings in real life.
C. Ducks comforted Yu and became his like minded friends.
D. Automata have gained popularity among those from all walks of life.
27. What is the best title for this passage
A. Knowledge starts with practice B. Good mind leads to good careers
C. Popularity of art comes from life D. The pursuit of one’s interest counts
C
Looking back is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see what has led you here and, hopefully, how society has changed and improved.
Take my career goal for instance. First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon a real estate agent, then a driving instructor and somewhere along the way, a footballer.
I had grown up in a football-loving family. I remember the exact moment when I said, “I’m sad that I can’t be a footballer.” while watching the game with Dad as a pre-teen. He asked why. “Because I’m not a boy.” He immediately responded, “You can, if you want to.” “Yeah, I suppose so,” I sighed, “but no one watches women’s football.”
Looking back, I can see exactly why I felt like that. At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for boys. I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV. You see, you can’t be what you can’t see, and lack of representation leads to, at best, misunderstanding, and at worst, fear and negative opinions.
Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland women’s football team in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in—over 950,000 tickets have been sold so far. But, although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments—with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that’s because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.
Today, I’ll be cheering on the Lionesses, because it’ll mean female footballers with aptitude being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe, a little girl believing that she can also be a Lioness one day.
Which of the following best describes the author’s career goals
A. Realistic. B. Changeable. C. Consistent. D. Long sought.
29. Why didn’t the author believe she could be a footballer
A. She was not talented enough. B. People lost faith in women’s football.
C. Girls were forbidden to play football. D. She had no example to follow.
30. What can we know about women’s football from Paragraph 5
A. It’s better paid than men’s. B. It is increasingly popular.
C. It has no market demand. D. It is not profitable.
31. What does the text mainly want to tell us
A. Society advances with time. B. Women deserve equal rights.
C. Each goal is worth pursuing. D. Hard work always pays off.
D
A Chinese space mining company has designed a robot that can catch waste material left behind by spacecraft in outer space with a big net.
The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the robot launched on the government’s Long March 6 rocket along with several satellites. The robot will also investigate deep space to observe small objects in the universe. The 30-kilogram robot, called NEO-01,was developed by Origin Space. Founded in 2019 and based in the southern Chinese tech hub Shenzhen, Origin Space has been dedicated to exploring and using space resources, according to the company. The company says the robot will lead the way in future technology capable of mining on asteroids(小行星).
The world’s first asteroid mining company, Planetary Resources, Inc was established in 2010. Since then, more than 12 businesses around the world have entered the industry, including 3D Systems of the United States and Japan’s Astroscale. Astroscale’s technology uses magnets(磁铁)to gather up space waste. But a report on the Origin Space website says NEO-01 will use a net to catch waste and then burn it. Thousands of satellites have been launched worldwide. As they are used for too long, many end up as waste and put other operating satellites at risk.
Su Meng is the founder of Origin Space. He said the company plans to launch many space telescopes and more spacecraft to begin the first for-profit mining of asteroids by 2045. Su added that NEO-01 will serve as a prototype(雏形) of future space mining robots, which can use rich mineral resources on asteroids to support the development of the space industry.
The Xinhua News Agency reported that China was increasing efforts to land a spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid to collect material. China is also speeding up a plan to build a defense system against near-Earth asteroids. The country aims to follow Russia and the United States in becoming a major space power by 2030.
What can we know about NEO-01
It weighs 60 kilograms.
It was created by Planetary Resources, Inc.
It will be burnt after accomplishing its mission.
It is mainly used to catch space waste.
Why does China try to land a spacecraft on a near-Earth asteroid
To collect material.
To build a defense system.
To catch up with Russia and America.
To support the development of the space industry.
What can be learned from the text
China will be the most powerful country in space by 2030.
Origin Space will open more mines on asteroids.
It is those useless satellites that make space waste.
The robot will look into deep space for more waste.
What can be the best title for the text
NEO-01, a Smart Robot Used in Space
A Chinese Robot Can Catch Space Waste
A New Robot Makes China a Space Power
NEO-01, the Pioneer of Future Space Robots

How to Activate Brain Cells
Scientists used to think that your brain stopped the growth of new cells once you reached adulthood. Happily, current research shows that it isn’t true! As you get older, you can continue to generate new brain cells.
Get regular aerobic(有氧的) exercise.
Research shows that regular aerobic exercise over a long period of time can better improve brain cells’ growth than other forms of exercise. Add aerobic activities such as swimming, power walking, or jogging, to your regular routine. 36
Do stress-relieving activities.
Activities that reduce stress and give you a sense of well being can encourage the growth of new brain cells. 37 You can do some yoga, read your favorite book, or listen to relaxing music.
 38
Antioxidant-rich(富含抗氧化物的) food can prevent damage to your current brain cells and promote the growth of healthy new cells. Omega-3 fatty acids may also help improve your brain’s health. Add plenty of brain boosting food to your diet, such as vegetable oil, nuts, green tea, blueberries and fatty fish.
Maintain an active social life.
39 It’s also good for your brain. Socializing helps keep your brain cells active, preventing some of the loss of brain function. If you can’t socialize in person, reach your friends over the phone or on social media.
Get plenty of good-quality sleep.
If you’re an adult, try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you’re a teen, aim for 8-10 hours. Your brain heals itself of the day’s stresses while you sleep. 40 You can improve your sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
Spending time with friends isn’t just enjoyable.
Eat food rich in antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids.
Any kind of head injury may put you at risk of brain damage.
Try to do things that bring you pleasure and help you relax every day.
For example, you might aim for 30 minutes of jogging a day, 5 days a week.
Fortunately, there are treatments that can help you restore your brain’s health.
It also processes information you picked up during the day, helping you to learn and preserve new memories.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs... How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
