A
Location
St Helena is one of the remotest islands on Earth. The subtropical (亚热带的) British Overseas Territory sits in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, 1,200 miles from the west coast of Africa and 1,800 miles from the east coast of South America.
Size Population
St Helena is only 16 km long and 9 km wide and the population is 5,000. This is 1/3 the size of the Isle of Wight, and the same size as Disney World Orlando. This is also the same size as San Francisco―yet the island has just 0.5% of San Francisco’s population. With an extremely low-crime community, you can freely explore the island’s natural and built attractions in peace.
Climate
As a subtropical island, St Helena’s temperature is 15-28°C all year round. While the four seasons are not recognized on St Helena, the “cooler months” are generally June to September and the “hotter months” are December to March. St Helena is free from extreme weather events, with even thunderstorms only occurring perhaps once a decade.
Accessibility
Until 2017, St Helena did not have an airport and was only accessible by sea. Reaching the island meant a five-day ship voyage from Cape Town, South Africa. However, since October 2017, the island’s first and only airport has enabled passengers to reach the island in just a six-hour flight.

A.Area. B.Population. C.Climate. D.Crime rate.
22.What can best describe the climate of St Helena
A.Tropical. B.Dry. C.Extreme. D.Mild.
23.How could visitors gain entry into St Helena before 2017

Fresh out of college, I had a job as a receptionist at an eyeglasses store, where I encountered both nice and unpleasant customers. Mr. Petrucci and his wife, a lovely elderly couple, would often come in. The woman was extremely sweet, often had questions, and liked to chat. Occasionally, I was so busy that taking the extra time with her was challenging, so I greeted her warmly and asked her to walk around the store at her own pace. In truth, I really liked the couple and imagined how fantastic it would be to have them as neighbors.
One day, Mr. Petrucci came in and walked up to my desk. It was unusual for him to come alone, but that didn’t register with me at first. I greeted him and asked what he needed. He told me that he just came in to see me. When he hesitantly told me that his wife had passed away, I was discouraged. My heart ached for him losing a woman he loved for all his life. Then he handed me a package and said it was a gift for me, a person who deserved it.
Thinking about that moment still brings tears to my eyes. I opened the box, and it contained wonderful, old-fashioned set of Irish-style hankies. I told him how touched I was by his thoughtful gesture. I’ve never seen him since then.
Although it happened forty years ago, I still can picture him standing there telling me something now. I still have one of those meaningful hankies. It always serves as a reminder of how important the smallest of gestures can be to someone. Just as I had no idea that I was making a difference to them, he could never imagine how much his gift meant to me. We touch each other’s lives in ways we often never know about — for good or for ill. The smallest amount of kindness has lasting repercussion. I try to remember that touching moment every day.

Every morning I’m almost guaranteed to wake up and read some climate news that screams disaster — a terrifying wildfire, a devastating flood or yet another report that says we’re past a tipping point. The round-the-clock disastrous environmental news weighs me down constantly.
If you’ve noticed the same, you are not alone. But all that constant stream of depressing news about the environment can get in the way of taking action. That’s because those headlines can lead us to believe that there is little an individual can do about climate change, when in fact that’s not the case. But staying motivated to make individual changes is hard when you’re feeling low.
That’s why one of my colleagues and I have come up with what we call a “happy climate approach”. It’s our way of talking about the behavioral changes we have identified that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide a greater sense of hope, appreciation, gratitude or fulfillment in our daily lives.
Now I’ve cut my driving from 8,000 kilometers a year down to 2,700 kilometers by working from home most of the time. Not only does this save emissions, but it also gives me more free time, which has been shown to promote happiness. I also choose to walk or bike everywhere I can. While it’s true that walking or biking can take more time than driving, these more active forms of transportation provide moderate physical exercise, which can also elevate mood.
And there’s a simple rule that I use to stay in a good mental state. For every piece of bad climate news I encounter, I make sure to read at least one positive article on the climate. To prevent myself from constantly scrolling through disheartening news, I’ve adjusted my newsfeed (新闻推送) so that I can see positive climate news on a regular basis, which brings me joy and hope.
I know we’re a long way from reversing the impacts of climate change. But at least with this approach, I don’t dread getting out of bed, reaching for my phone and reading the news.
28. What effect does the nonstop disastrous environmental news have
A. It motivates people to act. B. It blocks people’s action.
C. It changes people’s behavior. D. It provides useful information.
29. What is the “happy climate approach” according to the text
A. Making big changes in daily life. B. Reducing greenhouse gases greatly.
C. Ignoring negative climate news. D. Finding positive climate actions.
30. Why does the author read positive climate news regularly
A. To avoid negative emotions. B. To collect news materials.
C. To gain climate knowledge. D. To change news-reading habits.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To analyze the impacts of climate news. B. To stress the urgency of climate action.
C. To explain the causes of climate change. D. To advocate a positive way to fight climate change.
D
When we’re tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That’s because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true
Nathaniel Hoyle, a scientist of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, has been leading a study into this topic. The team discovered that fibroblast cells (成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night
It’s all to do with your body’s circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm — a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time. New Scientist reported that a group of 30 genes that control the fibroblasts worked only daytime shifts, causing the slower healing process at night.
To test its theory, the Cambridge-based team examined data from the International Burn Injury Database, which records details of burn victims around the world. This analysis revealed that nighttime burns, on average, took 11 more days to heal than burns during the day.
A similar result occurred while experimenting using live mice. Those that were cut during night-time hours recovered more slowly than those during the day. “You can see by eyes, when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag,” research team member John O’Neill told Science Alert.
He added, “The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime.” He went on to say that it could be beneficial to schedule surgeries in time with people’s circadian rhythms, earlier for early birds and later for night owls, in order to lessen recovery time. However, in any case, it might be best not to use anything sharp once the sun goes down.
32.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To explain how we recharge our bodies. B.To arouse the interest of the readers in the topic.
C.To prove that everyone suffers stress and injuries. D.To introduce a new discovery for dealing with stress.
33.What do the researchers find during their research
A.Burns take the same time to heal regardless of their cut time.
B.Fibroblast cells boost the healing by working nighttime shift.
C.Mice respond differently in the healing process from humans.
D.A body’s circadian rhythm matters in waking up fibroblast cells.
34.What can we learn according to John O’Neill
A.People tend to bear pain more when they are asleep.
B.Sharp knives are not suggested in the middle of the day.
C.Night owls operated on in the nighttime may recover sooner.
D.Evolution adaptation causes people’s time-varying responses.
35.What can be a suitable title for this passage
A.Why We Heal Injuries Better in the Daytime B.A Research Offers Clues to Treating Injuries
C.How We Heal Wounds and Injuries Effectively D.Scientists Unlock the Secret to Avoiding Injuries

When something that’s important to you disappears, don’t be hopeless. It may miraculously (奇迹般地) come back sooner or later. I learned it on one winter day.
It was one of those busy days. Especially, I had lots of clothes to wash. and Karen, my four-year-old kid, kept following me, pulling my shirt and crying for attention. I was annoyed. To stop her troubling me and make her quiet, I searched the drawers in the bedroom and found-a bag of forgotten balloons. “Yellow,” she said with joy.
The balloons were the gifts for her that her uncle had bought abroad. These balloons were of good quality and very unique, unable to be found at least in our small town. Among the balloons, the yellow one was Karen’s favorite. And there was only one yellow balloon. She viewed it as her best friend and even signed her name on its surface.
After I blew the balloon up, she cheerfully took it with tiny fingers, touching it and telling it her secrets. Immediately. her attention was attracted.
After lunch. we prepared to go to the local public clothes-washing shop. Before long. I was ready. Carrying her yellow balloon. Karen followed me into oat car. On the way, she was singing and had fun with the balloon. She kept beating the balloon against the back of the car seat. As I turned the corner, trying to keep my attention on my driving, I felt a sudden, big wind blow across my feet. I called out at once, “Karen! Close the window. It’s cold out!”
And then I heard her frightened scream. In a hurry, I looked over my shoulder, expecting to see some terrible insects that led to her being frightened. But there wasn’t one. Karen was looking out of the window. both arms reaching out, as if to get something. And she cried, “Balloon, balloon. Come back! Come back!” Then. she turned to me, calling out, “Mom, please stop the car! My balloon has escaped.”

Robots have become more and more intelligent in recent years, so some people think they are likely to take the place of human beings one day. However, I have different opinions. My reasons are as follows.
First of al1, robots are designed by human beings, so their intelligence is limited. Second, robots don’t have feelings just like human beings though they can imitate human beings in many ways. Most importantly, robots can’t think by themselves, which makes them different from human beings and put them at a disadvantage.
In conclusion, although technology makes it possible for robots to develop better intelligence and do a variety of things for us, they can’t replace human beings.

“Alright,” I said and slowly pulled over. Hurriedly, we got off the car. We watched helplessly as the balloon floated up. Driven by the wind, it flew farther and farther and finally disappeared in the sky. Karen cried hard. By the time we reached home, the promise of a new balloon, two new balloons or even ten new balloons had failed to calm Karen. Heartbroken, she whispered, “I’ll never find back my friend.” I felt sad. The next morning, I drove her to the park to cheer her up.
While walking in the park, we suddenly found a yellow balloon flying over a tree. “Is it Karen’s ” I thought. Minutes later, the balloon stopped on the ground. Karen and I rushed to check. To our surprise, it was Karen’s yellow balloon. There was her name she had signed. Possibly, the balloon had rested somewhere the day before and then was carried into the air by wind again. Karen kissed the balloon, saying, “I can’t believe you’d come back.” Later, when I’m in some trouble, I always think of this balloon and remind myself that tomorrow is another day and that nothing is impossible.
