One Silly Cat and Many Kind Neighbours
Hank, a two-year-old white cat, got stuck (卡住) in an 18-metre-tall tree for five days.
Hank’s 75-year-old owner, Delores Bushong, had just returned from the market when she realized that Hank hadn’t come in for lunch. As it grew dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewling (呜咽声), looked up, and saw Hank in a tree. How did he get there And how was she going to get him down It seemed that no one could help her. Bushong felt 196 , but her neighbours soon showed her that she wasn’t alone.
The tree belonged to Bushong’s next-door neighbour Ed Baptiste. Baptiste let the old woman sit in his yard and call Hank. Another neighbour offered a can of sardines (沙丁鱼). She hoped it would attract the hungry cat to come down. A third neighbour borrowed a ladder (梯子) from his factory. 197 , the ladder was too short to reach the cat. In fact, every neighbour gave Bushong a helping hand!
198 of these kind acts worked, however. The turning point didn’t come until Day Five. That was when another neighbour, Lydia Krassensky, thought of how her sister had once gotten her other neighbours created a pulley (滑轮) system. Then, they raised a basket with some of Bushong’s personal items. Hank was attracted by the familiar 199 and jumped into the basket. Finally, the neighbours slowly lowered him.
She was thankful for these kind neighbours. “I can’t 200 how many people went out of their way to help me with this cat,” She said, “I feel good to be living in such a neighbourhood.”

Mom and I lived in a small apartment above Mrs Wilson’s garage. Mrs Wilson had a no-pets rule, but I knew she used to keep a dog with her husband, who had passed away a few years ago. Anyway, I was determined to ask if I could have a dog. Mom gave me the go-ahead, but 211 me not to get my hopes up.
One day, I walked up to Mrs Wilson, when she was sitting on the front terrace (露台). I showed her the picture of Sweet Potato, a lovey dog from a shelter (收容所). She refused right away, saying our apartment was too small.
When I was finally old enough to be a volunteer at the shelter, I started helping walk the dogs there. I took them on hikes around the lake and to our neighborhood.
Days later, I found a(n) 212 from Mrs Wilson on our door. She asked us to pay the last month’s rent (房租) and leave. She thought I 213 the no-pets rule, probably because she saw me walking dogs. Mom tried to talk to her, but she wouldn’t listen.
I knew I had to 214 this.
When I was walking Sweet Potato the next day, we passed by Mrs Wilson on the terrace.
I said, “This is Sweet Potato,” when Sweet Potato rushed to her. She stroked (抚摸) the dog but said, “You shouldn’t have brought it home. “
“But I didn’t 215 any dogs,” I showed the shelter’s page on my phone to her.
“You didn’t bring home any dogs ” Mrs Wilson asked, looking at the screen.
“That’s right,” I said. “But I think Sweet Potato 216 here. You could keep it!”
“Keeping dogs is a lot of work,” Mrs Wilson replied, her eyes still on Sweet Potato.
“I’ll walk the dog and feed it.”
“So we’d work together ”
“Yes, madam. So, you’re considering it ” I asked.
Mrs Wilson picked up Sweet Potato and kissed its forehead, saying “Yes. It looks just like the one Jack and I had.”
I was so happy that I could help bring a little joy into Mrs Wilson’s life. It turns out that a little determination and the love of a dog could work wonders.

But a good number I could——and 246 , I wanted to change. For the first time, I got a clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. “We make a living with what we get, but we make a life with what we give.”

I believe in this saying. I used to 255 at the Boston Children’s Hospital every year starting when I was thirteen. At the beginning, I only wanted to go because I would have fun with children at the hospital. After giving my time for 40 months, my life was changed 256 .
When I first 257 into the waiting room on the ground floor, I was very 258 that I would be spending my whole summer with kids. My heart warmed every time I heard their excited voices asking me for a story or an answer to a question. I felt valued and no one could take my placed. I look back, I see the influence that these special children have had on me. Recently, I was asked to help out on many different floors besides the waiting room where I started. The kids on the floors above are usually there for a longer time. With their worries and wishes to get better and go home, they always offer me a 261 smile. I feel all the tiredness has gone after spending a day with them because I realize that there is much more to 262 than money. It is much more important to love and to be loved.

While I was living in the south of France, I drove all the way to Barcelona to buy a very special guitar. Once I was back home with my treasured, finely finished (抛光的) wooden instrument, my father asked if he could play it. He loved flamenco (弗拉曼柯舞曲) guitar music and decided to show his skills. 271 I knew it, he was tapping (轻敲) on the smooth top of my classical guitar with his fingernails (指甲)!
Guitars for playing lively flamenco music had tap plates (敲板) to protect themselves 272 the “attack” of fingernails. My father did not realize that my classical guitar did not have a tap plate. I feel bad and a little angry, but I 273 said, “Here, let me show you what I can play” as I took back my guitar.
I don’t want to admit (承认) this, but for years, whenever I played my guitar, I couldn’t help noticing the 274 made by my father on the guitar. I felt bad about feeling annoyed (恼怒的) because my father was so nice to me and I really loved everything about him.
After having my third child, I didn’t have as much time to practice guitar, so I put the guitar into a case. During that time, my father died and I was very sad for a long time. Then one day, I was in the mood to start playing my guitar and I opened the 275 for the first time in a long while. Once again, I noticed the fingernail marks on my guitar.
Those marks—my father had made them—yes, my father had made them. He was there—a part of him was there on the bright and smooth top of my guitar. How wonderful! I was so happy to see those little scratches made by the tapping of his fingers and all of a sudden my guitar was even more 276 than ever before. My father was a very wise man and I learned so much from him when he was with me—and now he was still 277 me. My opinion on what was important 278 . What had once seemed like defects (瑕疵) on my guitar were beautiful little souvenirs (纪念品) of time spent with my father.
I promised from that day on to always remember life’s each moment with the people I loved. Whenever I find myself about to “sweat the small stuff”, I think of my father and my beautiful guitar with the lovely marks.

One sunny afternoon, our teacher, Mrs. Hughes, announced that The Wizard of Oz would be our class play. My heart raced—it was my favorite story! In the past, I’d 288 behind my books during tryouts. My hands would shake, and my voice turned tiny. “What if I forget my lines ” I’d whisper. But this time was different. “I’ll show them my courage,” I told myself.
Determined to 289 myself, I brought home a script labeled “Lion’s Part.” My older brother Michael peeked over my shoulder. “You A lion ” He smiled and said. “Need a lion coach ” He joined me and helped me. We 290 daily after school. By the end of the week, my roar was so loud.
Tryout day arrived. My palms sweated us I entered the classroom. Emma’s Tin Man sang beautifully, and Jake’s Scarecrow danced gracefully. When my name was called, my throat dried. I stepped forward, knees knocking. Midway through my lines, I was so 291 that I forgot my words. My face burned with embarrassment.
As a result, another student got the part, and I had to play Auntie Em.
Mrs. Hughes called me aside. “Annie,” she said gently, “the Lion needs courage, but Auntie Em needs kindness. Both are important.”
At home, tears fell onto my pillow. “I wanted to be brave,” I sniffled. Mom hugged me tight. “Bravery isn’t just roaring loudly. It’s standing up even when you’re scared. You’ll shine as Auntie Em.”
With new determination, I practised every afternoon. Michael helped me 292 Auntie Em’s warm smile and gentle tone. “Your voice sounds like sunshine,” he said. On opening night, my heart pounded as I walked onstage. The spotlight felt blinding, but I remembered 293 words. I played Auntie Em with laughter and care—helping Dorothy find her way, sharing hugs, and even making the audience giggle.
When the curtain dropped, thunderous applause filled the room. Mrs. Hughes smiled at me. “Annie, you made Auntie Em unforgettable!” she said. For the first time, I realized happiness wasn’t about playing the biggest role—it’s about loving the 294 .
That night, I told Mom, “Next year, I’ll try again. but maybe as the Tin Man this time!” She laughed, knowing I’d found my own kind of courage.

Our Christmas Goose
On a cold morning that December, my brother Rick and I were sent to Uncle Tommie’s on the other side of Little Mountain to get a goose for Christmas dinner. This long journey over the mountain was hard but worth it.

By the time we reached the top of the mountain, it snowed more heavily. And the wind seemed to blow straight through my coat. I stepped in front of Rick. “You must be cold. Open your coat!”

I placed the warm goose inside his coat. Rick sighed happily (舒了口气). My plan was 299 .
