When I was a boy, I never looked at the stars much. During the summer evenings I preferred reading a book or watching television to being outside. As I got older I began to gaze up into the night sky more often, but we lived in a place with light poles that came on each night so I could only see a few dozen stars at the most. Still I enjoyed seeing their beauty.
One Summer night, however, I was picking up my daughter at a home in the country far off the beaten path. It was a clear sky that night and when I parked my car and got outside, what I saw took my breath away. The entire sky above my head was an ocean of light, a sea of stars. I couldn’t believe the beauty of it. I felt the warm summer breeze blow on my face as I looked up at this indescribable beauty and my whole spirit felt uplifted. I could feel the loving hand that created these billions of stars also touching my heart and my whole being was filled with peace, joy and happiness.
I also felt very small and very large at the same time. I felt tiny when I realized the immensity of the universe. Each of these stars was a sun and each one was millions upon millions of miles away. Yet, I could see the light from them all. But I also felt oneness with them. It was just up to me to live it.
I carry that memory of the night under a sea of stars in a special place in my soul. I feel blessed that I could see that beauty and realize that I too was a part of it. I only hope to live my own life with all the love I can, with all the wisdom I can, with all the joy I can and with all the light I can.
24. Why did the author rarely look at the stars when he was young
A. He preferred indoor activities. B. He was busy with schoolwork.
C. He didn’t find stars beautiful. D. He faced too much light pollution.
25. What happened to the author when picking up his daughter
A. He completely got lost in the dark. B. He regained a deep connection with nature.
C. He experienced the impact of light pollution. D. He was amazed by the beauty of the night sky.
26. What does the author convey through his experience
A. Exploring the unknown is necessary. B. Living with love and joy is valuable.
C. Protecting the environment is important. D. Finding beauty in daily life can be easy.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Beauty of Stars B. Under A Sea of Stars
C. A Special Summer Night D. My Childhood Memories

Are you smarter than a ten-year-old Shocking data reveals that a large number of adults in rich countries might not be. The OECD, a club of mostly wealthy nations, released a study last week showing about one-fifth of 16 to 65-year-olds perform no better in maths and reading tests than primary school leavers.
Moreover, adult literacy has declined in many places over the past decade. The OECD’s “Surrey of Adult Skills”, conducted once every ten years, had 160,000 adults from 31 countries and regions take short tests in numeracy (计算能力), literacy and problem-solving. These tests assess whether they can hold jobs, engage in daily life and succeed in the real world, from understanding aspirin packet warnings to calculating wallpaper needs. Finland tops the charts with the highest average scores in all three areas, while the Netherlands, Norway and Japan also fare well. England has climbed the rankings in the past ten years due to young adults’ better performance, but America’s results are worsening. Similarly, Chile, Italy, Poland and Portugal have many below-average scorers; nearly half of Chileans score poorly in maths and reading compared to just 8% of Japanese.
Overall, basic skills are deteriorating. In numeracy, for every country with a rising score, there is another that has seen its score fall. In literacy, more countries’ scores are dropping despite higher secondary school completion and more degrees. The decline is among the least skilled. Migration and ageing populations partly explain it, as non-native speakers struggle in language tests and skills peak around 30. But even accounting for these, many countries’ literacy scores are falling. Andreas Schleicher blames less practice at reading complex texts, perhaps due to TikTok, RedNote or YouTube.
This isn’t the only sign of stalled (停滞的) cognitive skill improvement. The “Flynn effect” saw IQ scores rising in the 20th century, but recently some countries have seen decline. High scorers in OECD tests earn 75% more than low scorers and report better well-being, while low scorers feel lonelier. Clearly, strong cognitive skills bring advantages.
28. How does paragraph 2 support its argument
A. By listing test results. B. By showing statistics.
C. By clarifying the process. D. By explaining the reasons.
29. What does the underlined word “deteriorating” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Improving. B. Peaking. C. Restoring. D. Worsening.
30. What probably makes adult literacy decline according to Andreas Schleicher
A. Increasing aging populations. B. Declining job opportunities.
C. Reduced demanding text reading. D. Decreased social media application.
31. What can be inferred about high scorers in OECD tests
A. They are generally happier and better-off.
B. They are less likely to engage in daily life.
C. They tend to score poorly in literacy and numeracy.
D. They have more chances of experiencing loneliness.
D
The release of DeepSeek-R1 has sent shockwaves through the AI industry, reshaping assumptions about the cost of high-performance AI. Achieving results comparable to OpenAI’s o1 at just 3-5% of the cost, this open-source model has gained immense popularity, topping downloads on HuggingFace and trending among developers eager to explore its capabilities.
A major innovation behind DeepSeek-R1 is its unconventional training approach. Unlike traditional models that rely heavily on supervised fine-tuning (SFT) for step-by-step learning, DeepSeek-R1 was mainly trained using reinforcement learning (RL). This allowed it to develop independent reasoning abilities, rather than relying on pre-set training data. While some SFT was reintroduced later to address readability and language issues, the success of RL in enhancing reasoning performance marks a breakthrough in AI training methodology.
DeepSeek’s rapid progress also shows its smart use of resources. Operating with far fewer GPUs than OpenAI and Google, it took advantage of open-source projects, such as Meta’s Llama models, and used advanced techniques like mixed-precision training and optimized (优化) GPU communication. Although the exact costs remain uncertain, estimates suggest DeepSeek-R1 was created on a much smaller budget than usual, proving that cutting-edge AI does not necessarily require massive financial investment.
Another key advantage of DeepSeek-R1 is its transparency (透明性). Unlike OpenAI’s models which hide their reasoning process, DeepSeek-R1 openly displays its thought process, making it easier for developers to find mistakes and improve results. This has fueled interest in using DeepSeek to fine-tune smaller, task-specific AI models, making powerful AI tools more accessible.
However, DeepSeek’s dominance is not guaranteed. Open-source innovation moves quickly and rivals like Meta and Mistral are expected to adopt similar breakthroughs soon. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s massive investments, including its $500 billion Stargate project, face growing inspection as cost-efficient alternatives emerge.
Despite concerns over potential biases in DeepSeek’s model, many developers see these as manageable through fine-tuning. Ultimately, businesses and consumers stand to benefit the most, as the increasing availability of high-quality, low-cost AI tools challenges the industry’s traditional power structure.
32. Why is DeepSeek-R1 so popular
A. It is more convenient. B. It dominates AI industry.
C. It is more cost-effective. D. It can achieve better results.
33. What can we learn about DeepSeek-R1 in paragraph 2
A. Its training datasets. B. Its reasoning abilities.
C. Its training method. D. Its processing language.
34. Why is DeepSeek-R1 considered more transparent than OpenAI’s models
A. It makes all of its training data publicly available.
B. It reveals the full chain of reasoning behind its answers.
C. It is designed to answer any question without restrictions.
D. It can use reinforcement learning methods to improve results.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce DeepSeek-R1.
B. To call for investments in AI.
C. To warn about the risks of AI.
D. To clarify reinforcement learning.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when 10-year-old Eric and his little sister Sarah were playing joyfully in the park near their home. While chasing a colorful, flying butterfly that seemed like a dancing fairy, they suddenly heard a faint crying sound coming from behind a thick, leafy bush. Curiosity getting the better of them, they exchanged a look of excitement and caution and carefully approached the bush. To their surprise, they found a small, shivering puppy with a hurt paw, its big, sad eyes pleading for help.
Eric gently picked up the puppy, holding it in his arms. “Poor thing,” he said softly, his eyes filled with deep concern. “We can’t just leave it here.” Sarah nodded vigorously in agreement, her little face showing obvious worry. Without thinking twice, they decided to take the puppy home and nurse it back to health.
When they arrived home, their mother was initially shocked by the unexpected guest in Eric’s arms. But as soon as she saw the helpless, trembling puppy, her heart melted. She quickly fetched the first-aid kit, helped Tom clean the puppy’s wound gently and then bandaged it carefully. Eric and Sarah took turns looking after the puppy day and night. They named the puppy Lucky, sincerely hoping its luck would change for the better.
A few weeks later, Eric and Sarah were strolling along the street, chatting and laughing merrily. Lucky, their lovely pet dog was running around them full of energy, its tail wagging happily. As they passed by a community noticeboard, something bright red caught their eye. It was a dog-lost poster with a photo that looked exactly like Lucky. Eric and Sarah froze, their smiles fading instantly. They stepped closer, only to find the description of the lost dog’s features, habits and even the time it went missing all matched Lucky perfectly.

【原文】M: Think for a moment of the last test paper you got back from a teacher. What do you remember most about it Was it the score, the questions you got right or those you got wrong Chances are what you got wrong sticks with you and now you’ll always remember the right answer. It’s the same when learning a language. Before we start speaking poorly and call it good learning, we need to understand how to speak well. A proven way to know how things should be said is to listen. For example, movies, music, TV and short videos can help improve your listening and pronunciation. For lower level learners, try reading children’s books. You can build up sentence structures and basic vocabulary quickly. This will help you move on to harder materials such as newspaper articles. Lastly, remember that making mistakes is a key part of learning. Just like those wrong answers on a test, use your mistakes as fuel to help you improve. Keep practicing and learning from your errors and you will end up making fewer of them. During my years of medical experience in a foreign country, clear and effective communication with patients is crucial. I hope these tips can help you make progress in your language learning journey.

After a brief pause, Sarah nodded, acknowledging the moral weight of their decision. They dialed the number on the poster and arranged to meet the owner at a nearby park, ready to do what was right.
At the park, the owner rushed over with open arms. Lucky barked joyfully, instantly recognizing its long-lost companion. Witnessing the heartfelt reunion, Eric and Sarah were filled with a bittersweet blend of happiness and sorrow. The owner, overwhelmed with gratitude, extended an open invitation for them to visit Lucky anytime. Though parting was painful, Eric and Sarah were overcome with a sense of pride for having chosen integrity over attachment. In losing Lucky, they discovered a deeper truth: the greatest fulfillment in life comes from the joy we selflessly give to others.
