What do you call your mother’s mother Whether you say laolao or waipo depends on your dialect (方言). And humans aren’t the only ones who have different dialects. Some animals do, too!
Scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark spent six years studying sperm whale in the Caribbean. They found that the whale communicate through special noises that are unique to their group because the noise has never been found in Pacific whales. When researchers studied the howls (嚎叫) of different kinds of wolves, they found that red wolves, Arctic wolves and coyotes (郊狼) have howls that are different in pitch (音高). In other words, they have their own dialects. Other animals that have been shown to have dialects include bats and dogs.
So how do animals develop their own dialects According to scientist Darcy Kelley, most animals learn their accents (口音) naturally. For example, monkeys start speaking their dialect as soon as they are born. And when scientists placed some monkeys in a new environment where their playmates all spoke a different dialect, it was interesting to find that the monkeys still spoke their own dialect. It seemed that the environment had no influence on their communication. However, some animals can change their accent according to their environment. Studies show that birds who live in cities develop different accents from those in the countryside. To deal with loud city noise, city birds’ tweets (啁啾声) are high-pitched. It makes it easier to be heard in noisy places.
“A proper accent can help animals to find friends or warn the coming of enemies, which is a basic living skill. No animal group can risk changing their own dialect and learning a new one.” Darcy Kelly says.

6. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To tell us the importance of dialects.
B. To ask us to protect the dialects of animals.

If only one person can be called the greatest English writer of all time, that person should be William Shakespeare. His plays have been translated into many languages. There are over 400 films and TV plays from his works. All of them are popular around the world.
William Shakespeare was born in a small town in England in 1564. In his youth, he moved to London and began to work as a play writer.
Why can Shakespeare’s plays catch people’s hearts That’s because the characters and stories tell truths about human nature in his plays.
His comedies put the joke on human weaknesses and always have a happy ending. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream goddesses secretly play magical tricks on people lost in the forest. Then the people will fall in love with ones whom they are not supposed to love. However, his tragedies (悲剧) can be very dark. Hamlet is about a man who takes revenge (复仇) after he knows it is his uncle that kills his father. But he loses his life in the end. Besides, Shakespeare’s historical plays are also famous. For example, John King is about the early 13th century British history.
Shakespeare’s works also have a big influence on the English language. He created about l,700 new words, including everyday ones like lonely and hurry. Of course, Shakespeare’s English was very different from that of today. But it doesn’t influence his popularity. He left the world great treasures. And they are played more often than any other play writer’s.
Shakespeare is not for an age, but for all time.

How to Make Our Spare Time More Meaningful
As students, we often have spare time after school or on weekends. To make this time more meaningful, I have some suggestions.
First, we can help our parents with housework. Not only does this lighten their burden, but also teaches us responsibility and life skills. For example, doing the dishes or cleaning the room can be a good start. Second, developing hobbies is a great way to spend our free time. Whether it’s painting, playing a musical instrument, or reading, hobbies can enrich our lives and help us relax. Lastly, participating in volunteer activities is another meaningful option. Helping others, such as tutoring younger students or assisting in community events, can bring us a sense of fulfillment and make a positive impact on society.
In conclusion, by helping at home, pursuing hobbies, and volunteering, we can make our spare time both enjoyable and meaningful.
