A Taste of Culture Through Food
Cooking is like making art, and there's a special competition that shows this: the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year. It's a big competition that happens every year. At the competition, photographers from all over the world share their pictures of food. This year, the competition got over 9,000 photos from around 65 countries.
Of all these photos, one named “Red Bean Paste Balls” won the top prize of the year 2024. It was the work of a Chinese photographer named Yang Zhonghua. He took the photo during the Spring Festival in Xiangshan, Zhejiang, and the judges② said it was the cream of the crop.
Yang has been taking photos for 40 years. He did not take part in the competition for the prize money but because he wanted to let people know about his hometown and its special food. “Red bean paste ball is a traditional snack in Xiangshan. We make it during Chinese New Year and share it with our families and friends,” he said. Food is a big part of life in Xiangshan. Yang likes to take pictures of food, especially during holidays. He's happy to show the world his hometown through food.
The photo reminds us how food is important in our culture. Food brings people together. It's a simple thing that everyone understands and loves. Though the world is changing, food is one of the things that connect us across time and cultures. We grow it, cook it, eat it, and celebrate with it.
