Helen Clitheroe was 32 when she started doing the steeplechase(障碍赛跑). British Athletics encouraged
her to try it because 2008 would be the first time women’s steeplechase was in the Olympics. She had never
jumped over barriers before her thirties.
In 2010, she competed in both the 1,500 m and steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games, which became a
turning point. After a few injuries and falling out of love with the steeplechase a little bit, she talked with her coach
John Nuttall about her options. They decided to attempt different challenges to focus on longer distances — the
5,000 m and 10,000 m.
In 2011, although they hadn’t planned to compete indoors that season, she was in excellent shape. She won the
match in Glasgow, breaking Liz McColgan’s record. Then she set her personal best in the 3,000 m at Birmingham.
Going into the European Athletics Indoor Championships, she was the fastest runner on paper, but she had
come fourth twice before in these championships. Her coach and she discussed race strategy carefully. For the first
time, she followed her coach’s advice exactly, staying near the front but not leading until the end. She had never
trusted her finishing sprint(冲刺) before, but that day she did. Even though Russian runner Olesya Syreva was
close behind, she won her first gold medal.
At 37, she became the oldest person to win a European indoor title. Many people had kept asking when she
would retire, but this victory proved that older athletes could still succeed. She changed her training as she got
older, being more careful with hard training sessions and taking more time to recover. As she says, as long as you
take care of your body, you can still run fast. This win was special because it came after many years of trying and
showed that age shouldn’t limit anyone’s dreams in sports.
24. What motivated British Athletics to suggest the steeplechase to Helen
A. Her running speed.
B. Her jumping ability.
C. The popularity of the steeplechase.
D. The chance to participate in the Olympics.
25. What can be inferred from Helen’s conversation with her coach
A. She wanted to retire. B. She lacked confidence.
C. She needed new challenges. D. She feared competition.
26. What made Helen successful in the final race according to paragraph 4
A. She trained harder than others.
B. She changed her style.
C. She copied her teammates.
D. She followed her coach’s race arrangements.
27. What message does the text mainly convey
A. Training methods vary with age.
B. Challenge is unavoidable in life.
C. Age is no barrier to success.
D. Success belongs to those with curiosity.

Engineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new
type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and management of tiny amounts of liquid, and the
best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion.
The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China,
was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated
together and can be rearranged, water droplets(水滴) could do something similar. This could be a great way to
build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how
liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body.
In their research, Du’s team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a liquid path.
They created a grid with tiny plastic pillars(柱子) that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched,
they joined together but did not spill(溢出) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the liquid
path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the
setup of blocks.
The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is
important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new discoveries are made.
Du’s team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use
this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs made from living cells are studied. This new
system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living
tissues more accurate and efficient.
28. How does the device created by the team in China differ from others
A. It is made from plastic. B. It employs water drops.
C. It is designed by a student. D. It features metal structures.
29. What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Enlarged. B. Combined. C. Distinguished. D. Shown.
30. What does Du’s team expect of the system
A. It will have wide application in medical treatment.
B. It will bring a heavy profit to the team.
C. It will enable students to be fond of blocks.
D. It will decrease the cost of artificial organs.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Exposure to Various Blocks Sharpens the Brain
B. There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing Blocks
C. Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids
D. Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water Droplets

At some level, advice on how to inspire employees is silly. It’s usually either obvious — be good at your job,
be passionate about the work and make the people on your teams feel valued — or shockingly inauthentic(不真实
的). But much more practical insights can be found in a coming book called Inspire: The Universal Path for
Leading Yourself and Others, by Adam Galinsky, an academic at Columbia Business School.
Lots of firms use a series of boringly abstract words to convey their goal: “change”, “innovate”, “connect” and
so on. Mr Galinsky cites an experiment that showed the effect of more concrete language. In it, teams were asked to
design toys and given a vision statement to guide their behaviour. Teams who were handed a statement with more
visual language — to create toys that “… make wide-eyed kids laugh and proud parents smile” — produced more
engaging toys than teams who were given something more general.
Another study is mentioned in Mr Galinsky’s book. Participants were asked to reflect on important events in
their lives, such as their choice of college. Some were also asked to think about how things would have turned out
if this event had not happened. This group attributed greater meaning to the event in question, whether because they
concluded fate had played a part in it or because it forced them to think through its results more clearly. This type
of counterfactual thinking(反事实思维) can also be used to strengthen employees’ ties to firms: Prompting
people to imagine a world in which their company does not exist seems to increase a sense of belonging.
Perhaps the most striking idea in Mr Galinsky’s book is that, instead of bosses motivating people from above,
individuals can do it for themselves. In this study some Swiss citizens who had newly registered with a government
employment agency were asked to do a10 - to 15-minute exercise in which they reflected on values that mattered to
them. They were three times more likely to find a job than those who did not do the exercise.
32. Why is a statement with more visual language mentioned
A. To promote a lively air in firms.
B. To prove Mr Galinsky’s view.
C. To state richness of a language.
D. To persuade readers to value expression.
33. What role does the counterfactual thinking play in a firm
A. It promotes employees’ sense of belonging.
B. It makes employees reflect on their strengths.
C. It inspires employees to study hard.
D. It trains employees to be creative.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. An interesting example about designing toys.
B. Individuals’ self-motivation for job-seeking.
C. Practical use of Swiss government measures.
D. An employment plan from Columbia Business School.
35. What is the text probably
A. An introduction.
B. A research article.
C. A news report.
D. A journal.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating
rather than substantial meals. 36 . The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods.
37
The demands of modern life mean that we don’t always have the opportunity to sit down and eat three meals a
day. For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. Others
regularly eat on their own and don’t want to bother cooking a full meal.
Focus on nutrients
There is no “right” way of eating, as long as you take in all the nutrients your body requires. 38 .
Boredom or stress can drive us to the fridge, or corner shop. If you make sure all your snacks are nutritious ones, as
well as lower in fat and sugar, you are less likely to eat beyond your body’s needs.
Choose healthy snacks
Starchy carbohydrates(淀粉类碳水化合物) have a lot to offer nutritionally and make excellent choices as
the basis both for snacks and for lunch. 39 . Fresh fruits or vegetables are both excellent choices for a light
snack. Although not as filling as starchy carbohydrate foods, some of them are high in disease-fighting vitamins.
Making time for lunch
40 , most of us try to make time for lunch, even if it is just a “light bite” — a sandwich in the office, or
a simple hot dish in the canteen. Lunch is an essential pause in the middle of the day, a chance to relax and recharge
our batteries a little.
A. As we are familiar with our habits
B. Either option is equally acceptable
C. Eat in a way that suits your lifestyle
D. We don’t just eat because we’ re hungry
E. Change your lifestyle through eating properly
F. No matter what our eating pattern is for the rest of the day
G. They are filling and help you stay filled with energy for a while

When I was a little boy, I didn’t seem to be good at anything so that I felt inferior(较差的). I longed to
achieve something to prove to myself that I am a capable person. So, I took part in various competitions, hoping to
experience the thrill of victory and boost my self-esteem(自尊).
Unfortunately, I never succeeded in any of these competitions. This constant failure led me to feel
discouraged. Feeling upset, I wanted to give up trying altogether. When my father noticed my disheartened spirit,
he decided to step in and help me.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, he took me to a carnival held by our local community center. Every year, our
town eagerly awaited this carnival, which was organized to raise funds for local charities. The carnival featured a
wide range of delicious foods, exciting rides, games, music, and other attractions.
My dad led me to a colorful tent at the carnival. Inside, a game was set up specifically for children. The game
involved throwing rings onto bottles to win prizes. An elderly man with a kind face was in charge of the game. It
was still early, and no other kids were around yet. My dad pushed me forward and encouraged me to give it a try. I
approached the old man nervously and asked, “How do I play this game ” He smiled warmly and explained, “It’s
simple and fun. Just throw these rings and try to get them over the bottles. If you manage to get even one ring on a
bottle, you’ll win a prize of your choice.” I then asked about the cost of the game. The old man replied, “It’s five
dollars for ten rings.” My dad handed me the money quickly, and I passed it to the old man, who then gave me a
bundle of ten rings. I took a deep breath and threw out my first ring. It missed the bottle completely, landing on the
ground with a soft sound. Ring after ring, I missed each attempt. Sweat began to form on my forehead, and my
hands trembled.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With only one ring left, I was very nervous.
I held the prize tightly in my hands, with a huge smile spreading across my face.

restaurant for anyone who wants to come.

M: No, no. There must be a mistake. Can you check it, please
W: Okay. Let me check it. Here, Mr Charles C. Nelson for tonight.
M: Ah, my name is Charles Nelson, not Charles C. Nelson.
W: I’m sorry. Let me check this again. Oh, yes. Charles Nelson, a room for one for the 19th of May.
M: No, a room for tonight, not for tomorrow evening.
W: I’m really sorry, but I don’t think we have any rooms for tonight. Well, let me check my computer here. Ah!
There has been a cancellation for this evening. A bigger room is now available. But it is a little expensive. Can you
accept a higher price
M: Yes, I’ll take it. How much is it
W: The room is usually 250 dollars a night. Well, what I can give you is a 10% discount on your room plus a ticket
for a free breakfast.
M: Thank you very much!

(Text 10)
W: Good evening, everyone. I come to talk to you about my painting. At first, it was just a hobby, but it’s
really more than that now. I would paint in the evening after work. Now I paint three times a week instead of once a
week. That means I am busy with my painting on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. I first became interested
in art when I was at primary school. I would go out with some paper and a few pencils at the break time and draw
anything I saw. Then at middle school, we had art classes twice a week, and I learned how to use chalk to paint. I
majored in art at university. I’ve enjoyed painting in lots of different countries. Well, I’m going to end my speech
now by showing you a video of the places I’ve visited. After that, there will be a chance for you to relax with a cup
of coffee, and then there will be some time for you to ask some questions.

第二节(满分 25 分)
参考范文:
With only one ring left, I was very nervous. Sensing my anxiety, my dad came over and patted my shoulder.
“It’s okay, son,” he said gently. “Take a deep breath, focus on your aim, and don’t rush.” He guided me on how to
adjust my stance and aim more carefully. Encouraged, I took a deep breath and threw the final ring. To my
astonishment, it landed perfectly around the bottle. The old man clapped and handed me a small, colorful prize.
I held the prize tightly in my hands, with a huge smile spreading across my face. At that moment, I realized
that with perseverance and patience, I could overcome my self-doubt. This experience at the carnival became a
turning point, teaching me that I was capable after all, and I was no longer the boy who felt inferior. It was not just
about winning a small prize; it was a life-changing moment. Since then, every challenge I encounter becomes an
opportunity to prove myself. I approach them with courage and confidence, knowing that I have the power to
overcome obstacles, just like I did with that final ring.
