For a long time, China was isolated (隔离) from the rest of the ancient world due to natural
barriers. The Himalayan Mountains lie to the west and the Gobi Desert to the north. To the south
are more mountains and seas. To the east lies the great Pacific Ocean that stretches all the way to
the west coast of the United States. So Chinese culture developed all by itself.
We know the Chinese had a written language as early as 1500 BC. That is when the Shang
dynasty ruled northern China. You can see that Chinese writing is very different from the writing
in other countries. The Chinese use a different character for each word. People in many countries
have to learn only 26 letters, but people in China have to memorize about 600 characters before
they can do basic reading and writing.
Many inventions were made and used in China before the rest of the world even heard of
them. Around the time of Christ, the Chinese were making silk, porcelain (瓷器) and paper. By
this time, the Chinese did trade with other people. Chinese silk was in great demand, even in
Europe.
By 600 AD, the Chinese had invented printing and used printing presses (印刷机). A few
centuries later, they made the magnetic compass (指南针), which was a great help to sailors. A
compass can tell north from south, and enabled the great journeys of discovery.
The Chinese were the first to discover how to make explosive powder, the kind that we use
both for gunpowder and for fireworks.
From all this, you can see that the Chinese may have been isolated from other people.
However, they were very busy making things that the rest of the world found really exciting and
helpful when people learned about them.
56. According to the passage, what natural barriers isolated China from the rest of the ancient
world
A. The Great Wall and some big rivers. B. The Pacific Ocean and the European continent.
C. Only the Himalayan Mountains and the Gobi Desert.
D. The Himalayan Mountains to the west, the Gobi Desert to the north, mountains and seas to
the south and the Pacific Ocean to the east.
57. According to this passage, what’s the biggest difference between the writing of Chinese and
other languages
A.Chinese is more beautiful. B.Chinese has a longer history.
C.A different character is used for each word.
D.Fewer words should be remembered before reading and writing.
58.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “demand” in paragraph 3
A.Fashion. B.Danger. C.Development. D.Need.
59.What invention is NOT mentioned in the passage
A.Gun. B.Printing. C.Compass. D.Porcelain.
60.What’s the best title of this passage
A.The Four Great Inventions B.Isolated Ancient China
C.The New Development of China D.The Great Achievements of Ancient China

Recently, a set of video clips (剪辑 ) featuring a man showcasing umbrellas with various
creative designs has been sent rapidly on the Internet, even spreading overseas and attracting
foreigners with the unimaginable “Chinese creativity”, CCTV news reported.
In the clips, there are shining laser reflective umbrellas to dispel darkness, umbrellas with

From then on, Lei started to attach great importance to comments to absorb new ideas.
Presently, Lei spends several hours reading comments every day. “Basically 300 to 500
comments a day, I will read and reply to them all by myself. Only by carefully observing can I
know everyone’s need, and solve the after-selling problems on time,” he said.

Han-style clothing. “I want to try something new and also advocate for our Chinese culture,” Lei
added.

The Chinese character Fu is a necessity in Spring Festival celebrations. It 66
(express) people’s best wishes for the coming new year. The 67 (traditional)of pasting
the character Fu on walls and doors has been around for a long time.
It’s recorded that this tradition has started since Song Dynasty. The character Fu can be
pasted either 68 (normal) or upside down, because in Chinese, the “reversed F ” and
“Fu arrives” sound similar, both being pronounced as “Fu dao le”.
There is a story about pasting the “reversed F ”. Zhu Yuanzhang, the 69 (one) emperor
of the Ming Dynasty, once used the character Fu as a secret signal to kill a family for insulting (侮
辱) his wife—Empress Ma. 70 (avoid) the disaster, the kind-hearted Empress Ma ordered
every family to paste the character Fu in front of 71 (they) own doors before the sun rose the
next day. But one family pasted the character upside down, because they couldn’t read or write.
The next day, when the emperor ordered his soldiers to check, they found the character Fu
everywhere, including the upside-down one. The emperor said 72 (angry) to the soldiers. “I
will 73 (kill) the family who pasted the character differently.”
But Empress Ma said to the emperor, “that family pasted the character upside down on
purpose. It has the same 74 (mean) as ‘Fu arrives’.”
