One day, John Dolittle was sitting in his kitchen talking with the Cat’s-meat-Man who came to see him with a stomachache.
“Why don’t you give up being a people’s doctor, and be an animal-doctor ” asked the Cat’s-meat-Man.
The parrot, Polynesia, stopped singing and started to listen.
“You see, Doctor,” the Cat’s-meat-Man went on, “you know all about animals - much more than some local animal doctors. Be an animal-doctor.”
When the Cat’s-meat-Man left, the parrot flew onto the Doctor’s table and said,
“That man got sense. That’s what you should do. Be an animal-doctor. Give the silly (愚蠢的) people up - if they are not clever enough to see you are the best doctor in the world. Take care of animals instead - they’ll soon find it out. Be an animal-doctor!”
“Oh, there are plenty of animal-doctors,” said John Dolittle.
“Yes,” said Polynesia. “But none of them are good at all. Now listen, Doctor, do you know that animals can talk ”
“I know that parrots can talk,” said the Doctor.
“Oh, we parrots can talk in two languages - human-language and bird-language,” said Polynesia proudly. “If I say, ‘Polly wants a cookie,’ you understand me. But hear this: Ka-ka oi-ee, fee-fee ”
“What does that mean ” cried the Doctor.
“That means, ‘Is the porridge still hot ’ - in human-language.”
“Oh, my! You don’t say so!” said the Doctor, “You never talked that way to me before. Tell me some more! Now don’t go too fast - and I’ll write it down. This is interesting - very interesting - something quite new! Give me the Birds’ A.B.C. first - slowly now!”
At tea-time, when the dog, Jip, came in, the parrot said, “See, he’s talking to you.”
“What does that mean ” asked the Doctor.
“That means, ‘Can’t you see that it isn’t raining ’” Polynesia answered. “He is asking you a question. Dogs always use their noses to ask questions.”
After a while, with the parrot’s help, the Doctor got to learn the language of the animals so well that he could talk to them himself and understand everything they said. Then he gave up being a people’s doctor altogether.

Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934 and grew up in a seaside town. She became interested in animals and animal stories when she was young. Many people believe sharks (鲨鱼) are one of the most dangerous animals in the world. But according to a report, humans bring a far greater danger to sharks than they do to us. Shark attacks people do happen, however, they are not very often. On the other hand, every hour, about 11,000 sharks are killed by humans. It is time that we should take action to stop many kinds of sharks from dying out.
Why should we save sharks Because killing sharks is a problem for the whole world. Sharks are on the top of food chain. They eat other species, but few species eat them. As sharks die off, the number of other species will increase. This, in turn, means the food that other species eat will become less. So how can you help save sharks
Don’t use shark products. Pet foods, energy drinks, leather products can be made from shark parts. And shark meat is sold around the world. Humans hunted most sharks for their fins (鳍), which are used to make shark fin soup. The process is unfriendly and cruel. Fishermen often cut the shark’s fins off and then drop the shark back into the water, still alive. Sharks breathe by swimming. So if a shark can’t swim with its fin, it will die.
If you eat seafood, make sure the food you eat comes from fisheries (渔场) that care for the sea. Many organizations (组织) try to protect sharks. They give us advice on how to keep them safe.
No buying, no killing! Maybe that is the best way to save sharks.
