(23-24八年级上·河北保定·期末)Beauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive (有魅力的) to others. A few bad nights are enough to make a person look more ugly, their sleep experiments show.
The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their sleep experiment. They were asked to get a good night’s sleep for two nights. A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row.
The researchers took make-up free (素颜) photos of the volunteers after both the good and the bad sleep. Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge (判定) them on attractiveness, health and sleepiness, as well as asking them, “How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture ”
The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score was low.

(23-24八年级上·重庆黔江·期末)I didn’t start playing ice hockey until my early 40s. My son is a huge sports fan and he often asked me to take him to watch hockey games. By and by, I fell in love with the sport and I decided to give it a try.
To be honest, it is the most difficult sport I’ve ever done. There was so much to learn. I saw a lot of learners get on the ice and pick up the hockey quickly and easily. But I wasn’t like them. I was so terrible at skating, but I never thought about giving up. So I took a skating training course and practiced hard in my free time. I finally mastered the skill, though it took me a really long time.
Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me to understand those students in my class who have difficulty in learning English. They might need to learn the same thing 3 to 4 times or need a few more days of practice.
It’s good to learn new things. Maybe you didn’t use the past year to improve yourself or to learn a new skill—but that’s OK! It won’t be late to start anything at any time.
1.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about
A.How I started hockey. B.How to enjoy hockey.
C.What my son’s interest was. D.What my life was like.
2.What does the underlined phrase “pick up” in Paragraph 2 mean

(23-24八年级上·河北承德·期末)Weekday mornings are very busy for the U. S. middle school students. When your school doesn’t have a bus, and you live too far away to walk, you need a carpool. A carpool is a group of people sharing the responsibility (责任) of driving to school in the morning. A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely at times.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say “hi” to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (表示感谢) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here ” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to the kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too ” or just join in. If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends.
▲ But how to be a friend Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or some more new friends. You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left: You can introduce her to your new friends!

Lin Tao, a middle school student, thinks teenagers should be free to play. “Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous (紧张) and just couldn’t enjoy myself to the fullest.” Lin says. “And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable with his mother’s supervision.”
Wang Min, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, thinks playtime needs supervision. She explains, “People usually say I like to control my kid, but that’s not true. I am just worried that he will get into trouble. Some guys may have a bad influence on him and some games like LARP may mislead him. He might even get indulged in the stories and can’t get back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a doctor of social studies, says it’s understandable for teenagers to wish for freedom. Free play helps them to be independent. Parents can give them more space.

(23-24八年级上·重庆合川·期末)①A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. For example, if you find a really old house somewhere, you will see that the doors are usually much lower than they are today. Why Because hundreds of years ago, people were shorter. Over time, the human body has changed a lot.
②Can we expect the human body to keep changing in the future For sure, and the main reason is that we have more and more technology (科技), and it’s changing how we live. Here are some possible changes.
③In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past, so we grow more. But we will get weaker (弱的) in more than one way. Our muscles (肌肉) will not be as strong as now, because we won’t do lots of physical work.
④We are already using our feet less, and our hands more (think about cars and computers). So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller. At the same time, our fingers (手指) will get longer. And our fingers and eyes will both get better, because they will have to do more work together.
⑤What about the mouth It will get smaller, because we needn’t talk so much with the help of technology. And last but not least—people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, because we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm anymore.

There are usually four or five kids in a carpool and their parents take turns to drive the kids in their cars.
Someone’s car smells like wet dogs. Some kids get to eat desserts for breakfast and some parents shout so much that all you try to do is to stay quiet and go unnoticed. When your mum or dad drives the carpool, your classmates get a close-up look at how strange your parents can be. It might be your first sociological (社会学的) study and your first time to work with others.
Teamwork is really important in the carpool because nobody wants to make anyone else late. It’s a great lesson in responsibility. Imagine sitting in the car outside of a classmate’s house, watching the clock and counting the seconds. A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely at times.

But how do you make them Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.

But today’s beekeeping business is not good for these hard-working insects. Bee farmers may kill them after harvesting honey because it’s cheaper than feeding the bees through the winter. To save bees, US company MeliBio has found a way to make the world’s first bee-free honey. They used synthetic biology (合成生物学) to create honey directly from plants. ________________ When you feel angry or unhappy, what do you do about it Scientists say you can try to calm yourself. (23-24八年级上·湖北武汉·期末)A few weeks ago, I went into Chase’s class for help. I e-mailed Chase’s teacher one evening and said, “My son keeps telling me that his homework is maths, but I’m not sure whether I should believe him. Help, please.” She e-mailed right back and said, “No problem! I can help Chase after school anytime.” And I said, “No, not him. Me. He gets it. Help me.”

After several months, I began to find that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “What a lazy woman! I want to know why she doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
