The winter of 2007-2008 was one of the coldest winters on record（记录在案） in China, with many areas in Central and South-East China receiving snow from January 10th to February 6th. Many places suffered（遭受） the worst snowstorms in more than fifty years.
The snowstorms caused many problems because they happened during the Spring Festival, when many people like to travel. The snow destroyed（破坏） the railway line between Beijing and Guangzhou. More than six million people were stranded（滞留）. In Guangzhou alone, more than 500,000 travelers were trapped（陷入困境） for days, and were not able to go home. All the hotels were full of people. Some people even had to stay at railway stations, bus stations or airports.
More than 220,000 homes were destroyed and 860,000 were damaged because of the heavy snow. The snow broke power lines（输电线） and the cold broke water lines, so even those with a place to stay had no heat or water. The snowstorms also caused many economic problems. The cold weather and snow destroyed vegetables and fruit that were growing in fields, kept many factories closed, and hurt thousands of businesses.
