Few would guess what kind of animal my pet is. It lives in a tank, but it’s not a fish. It can live out of water, but it’s not a turtle. It has eight legs and two red claws (鳌). It’s a crab (蟹)!
This crab caught my eye when I visited a pet shop three years ago. It was so cute! I brought it home 31 a second thought. After a hard day at work, 32 my crab really makes me happy. Crabs aren’t picky eaters. From rice to small dried fish, my pet seems to enjoy everything. The Water-Splashing Festival (泼水节) is a really fun time for the Dai people in Yunnan, China. It happens every spring, around April, when the weather is just right.
It began in Persia (波斯) and became a custom of the Dai people in the 12th century. The festival is also celebrated in other countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
People clean their homes, cut their hair, and take a bath before the festival. Activities include sending lanterns into the air and watching boat races on the Lancang River. There are also colorful parades where people wear traditional (传统的) Dai clothes, dance, and sing songs. It’s a special time for families and friends to get together, eat good food, and give gifts. At night, they write wishes on lanterns and flew them up into the sky along the river.
The best part of the festival is, of course, water splashing. Kids, adults, everyone joins in. They use buckets, water guns, and even big hosepipes.
