When my son was a little boy, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then tum to me to see if I was hurt. When my face showed sorrow, he would burst out crying. It I remained calm, he would break himself off and get back to running. Learning that I could so powerfully influence his state of mind was a revelation (启示). This was how the human being was counting on me to make sense of the world - not just how to tie his shoes or recite the ABCs, but how to feel.
I've spent the past 30 years working in schools, and I've watched thousands of parents engage with their children and with their teachers. Too often, I watch parents overfunctioning - taking away their kids' confidence that comes from struggling and persevering, and exhausting themselves in the process. We're biologically wired to prevent our children's suffering. A parent's first response is often to remove the obstacle (障碍) from their child's path. This urge has led to pop - culture beliefs around parenting styles, including the "Helicopter Parent," who flies in to rescue a child in crisis, and the "Snowplow Parent," who flattens any obstacle in their child's way.
In the 1960s, the psychologist, Diana Baumrind described three parenting styles, which researchers eventually expanded to four: authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, and authoritative. Authoritarian parents make all decisions for their children with little room for negotiation. Permissive parents avoid conflict by setting few boundaries. Uninvolved parents are disinterested, providing minimal support. Authoritative parents allow for some flexibility, combining clear expectations with the willingness to listen. Authoritative parenting can be referred to as "Lighthouse Parenting". Like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks, "Lighthouse Parents" provide firm boundaries and emotional support while allowing their children the freedom to learn with their own challenges. They demonstrate that they trust their children to handle difficult situations independently.
All parents show up as authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, or authoritative at different times, depending on the situation. But remembering to put parenting in perspective, focusing on long - term outcomes over short - term saves, can reduce some of the stress of parenting while also producing better outcomes for children.
24.Why does the author mention his son's fall in paragraph 1
A. To emphasize the pain children suffer in their growth.
B. To highlight the importance of parents' emotional stability.
C. To show the influence parents' responses have on children.
D. To illustrate children's ability to handle problems independently.
25.What is a possible result of overfunctioning according to paragraph 2
A. Parents' anxiety and exhaustion.
B. Children's struggling and persevering.
C. Children's disappointment with their parents.
D. Parents' lack of confidence in solving problems.
26.What do "Lighthouse Parents" tend to do in their parenting
A. Remove obstacles from their children's paths.
B. Provide their children with support and trust.
C. Avoid participating in their children's matters.
D. Make decisions for their children without negotiation.
27Which of the following may the author agree with
A. Parents should learn to let go.
B. Being a parent comes at a considerable cost.
C. Parents need to prioritize children's happiness.
D. Every parenting style is a double - edged sword.

As we know from living on the Sancoat, mangroves are all around us. They grow along almost every coastline, provide habitat for fish and other wildlife, protect our homes from destructive storms and erosion, maintain clean water, and contribute to climate change - fighting, thanks to their carbon - storing abilities.
Still, even with their immense beauty and vital importance to our community, mangroves are threatened in our area. To stand for the trees, Sancoat Waterkeeper has teamed up with Expense, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Geometry, and New College of Florida on a mapping project which will track mangrove growth and conditions along northern Sancoat, Palma Sola Bay, southern Tampa Bay, Tierra Ceia Bay and the Manatee River.
The training started this project for months, while Sancoat Waterkeeper and New College data science students will learn how to operate drones (无人飞行器), using photogrammetry to map and the local mangroves. (Photogrammetry is the act of obtaining precise measurements from photographs.)
The training, led by Digital Geometrics, will provide a standard operating procedure for community and student - based mapping using drone imagery, expense, based out of Longboat Key, will then provide its mapping platform to New College data science students for the hands - on experience of building, training and employing models using data from the project. Those models will show the extent (范围) and density (密度) of the surveyed mangroves.
Looking at the density of the trees over time will provide insight into the overall health of mangroves in the area.
The mangrove mapping project comes at a time when protecting wetlands is significant, as Manatee County is currently considering policies from its Comprehensive Plan and sections of the Land Development Code, which will allow for the destruction of local wetlands and wetland buffer areas. Sancoat Waterkeeper has put together a petition (请愿书) which will be sent to the Manatee County Board of Commissioners. The hope is that public knowledge about the project will bring a drive for the community to preserve and improve the condition of local wetlands, because once they're gone, they're gone for good.

A. They're the main source of food.

Common house cats possess the ability to associate words with images without hints or rewards, a new research has revealed. This discovery, published in Scientific Reports, throws new light on cats' cognitive (认知的) abilities and their potential for understanding human language.
"Human babies rapidly learn random associations between words and objects at a young age," the authors wrote. "How did this ability to understand language evolve It is not clear what selection pressures are related to language comprehension ability, though some studies have shown that this word - object - association ability is not confined to humans but is present also in other species."
The team designed an experiment to test cats' ability to associate words and objects. The study involved 31 adult house cats and adopted an approach similar to those used in baby language development research. In the experiment, cats were shown short videos paired with meaningless words. These videos were played again and again until the cats looked away. After a break, the same videos were shown, but with the spoken words completely changed. Researchers carefully observed the cats' reactions, focusing on gaze duration (注视持续时间) and pupil dilation (瞳孔放大).
The results were striking: cats demonstrated longer gaze durations and pupil dilation when the word - image pairings were switched, indicating confusion and a search for explanation. This behavior suggests that the cats had formed associations between the spoken words and the images they saw, even without any rewards or training.
“It is noteworthy that cats made the picture - word association after only brief exposure,” the authors said. “Most cats got used to the stimulus pairing after four trials, which means that they received only nine second exposures in two trials for each picture - word pair. By comparison, trials involving human babies used at least four 20 - second trials for a picture - word pair.”
But the study’s authors noted that it’s not clear why cats are able to form these associations so quickly and suggest more work is needed to examine the question from both evolutionary and developments perspectives.
32.What did the research find
A. The cognitive evolution of cats.
B. The methods of training cats.
C. Cats’ picture - word associative ability.
D. Cats’ special ways of communication.
33.What does the underlined word “constrained” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Limited.
B. Attached.
C. Known.
D. Introduced.
34.What caused the cats’ changes in behavior
A. Playing different videos.
B. Switching the word - video pairings.
C. Copying human baby language.
D. Changing the spoken words in the video.
35.What can we infer from the author’s words in paragraph 5
A. Cats can concentrate longer than babies.
B. Cats learn associations faster than babies.
C. Human babies have superior cognitive abilities.
D. Human babies have more advanced language skills.

Jane was a city girl, loving the busy life of the big city. However, a sudden change of heart had occurred and a deep - seated desire for change led her to change her home to a home in Mangalore. One fine day, with all her belongings in just three bags, she reached her new home that stood in a peaceful coconut grove (椰树林).
Tired of her office job and searching for a purpose, Jane decided to try farming, a tradition her family had left behind when her grandfather passed away. Without relatives nearby to help, she felt the weight of the challenge. She bought some basic farming tools, ready to give it a try, but as time went on, she lost her enthusiasm and felt completely defeated.
One day, as Jane stood by her gate, doubting her decision to leave the city job and wondering if she had made a huge mistake, she saw her neighbours coming towards her with bags in hand.
“Surprise! Jane,” Tina shouted, pulling her luggage and a bag full of planting seeds.
“Maybe we can add some color to this place,” Anna joked, winking.
Jane’s eyes welled up with tears as they all hugged. They all cried together, feeling the depth of her struggles. That night, her friends suggested a new idea.
“This place could be amazing!” Tina said, looking around the old house. “Why not fix it up and make it a warm home for travelers to stay in ”
“Totally!” Anna agreed. “We can all contribute and make it work.”
Jane was unsure because of money worries. Tina quickly said, “Don’t worry about the money. Jane. We’ve got your back. This is why we’re here for you.”

In the following weeks, they were busy working on the house. They cleaned the dusty rooms, painted the walls with beautiful colors, and transformed the old, neglected space into a cozy and inviting homestay. The once - silent home echoed with laughter and the sound of hammers as they fixed the old furniture and added new, comfortable beds. They even planted a small garden out front, and with each passing day, the house began to feel more like a home. The friends’ support and enthusiasm helped Jane regain confidence in life and her new venture.
After the redecoration, Jane received her first guests. When they stepped into the beautifully renovated house, their faces lit up with delight, and Jane felt a surge of pride and accomplishment. She had created a space where people could relax and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside, just as she longed for. The old house, once a symbol of her family’s lost tradition, was now a thriving hub of community and warmth. Jane’s friends not only helped her restore the house but also rekindled her spirit and gave her a new sense of purpose.
