In the middle of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Amanda Barrows carefully placed a wooden nightstand(床头柜) on the ground. She attached a sign reading, "Take a poem, leave a poem. "
"It's completely unexpected," said Barrows, a park ranger (管理员) by day and a poet by night. "I'm really taken aback by the outpouring of support. "
Barrows has always considered herself a writer, so she enrolled in a class called Poetry for the People. The final project of the class is to find a way to "bring poetry into the community".
At first, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. Eventually, she realized that she could fuse her love for parks and her love for poetry. A coworker gave Barrows a weathered nightstand. She thought it would be the perfect tool for her project.
She filled the drawer at the top with fresh paper and pens and added a box at the bottom for poems. To get the ball rolling, she asked her close friends to add their favorite poems to the drawer for people to take away.
The poetry nightstand reminded her of Little Free Libraries. That project features bookstands stationed across the city. People can leave and take books from little libraries. She only had a single nightstand to work with, so Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department manages about 220 parks, and Barrow's goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all of them.
Since the project started, people have added a wide range of writing. Barrows shares most of the submissions on social media. Some are clearly composed by kids, while others are more refined. People have also written poems in various languages. "I love to see different people's handwriting and share their personal words," Barrows said.
The instructors of Poetry for the People said the nightstand fulfilled the main purpose of the project. Other students in the class wrote poetry on sidewalks with chalk. Another gave out poems disguised as parking tickets. Tanea Lunsford Lynx, a guest instructor for the class, says the project is "an invitation to slow down". She believes that the old-fashioned nightstand stands out in a city that is filled with new technology.
Barrows says she intends to "keep this going indefinitely," and she hopes others will build off the project and contribute their own creativity. "It really is a community project," Barrows said. "It belongs to all of us. "
24.Why did Barrows put the nightstand in the park
A.To share poetry submissions.
B.To follow Little Free Libraries.
C.To advertise a poetry class.
D.To complete a required task.
25.What does the underlined word "fuse" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Combine. B.Reveal. C.Strengthen. D.Clarify.
26.What do we know about Barrow's project
A.It has involved 220 parks.
B.It is popular on social media.
C.It improves people's handwriting.
D.It makes poetry reach more people.

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but sometimes, a few words tell a bigger story. Instagram users find that a carefully thought-out caption for an image can make viewers pause, reveal something about the creator's personality, drive engagement, and perhaps inspire one to take action. Do labels in museums and art galleries do something similar when paired with artworks
A recent study, done by Kohinoor M. Darda and Anjan Chatterjee, researchers from University of Pennsylvania, was carried out to find the answer. They asked subjects how much they liked abstract and representational paintings. In the first experiment, Northern American subjects viewed Jackson Pollock's abstract works with no additional information or accompanied by biographical information about Pollock as well as his technique for creating art. In the second experiment, Northern American subjects viewed Indian and American-European representational paintings that were either presented with no information or with information about the artwork's content, the artist, and their technique.
They found that viewers' aesthetic judgments of liking abstract paintings increased when they had information about Jackson Pollock and his technique, compared to no information. Similarly, viewers liked Indian and American-European representational paintings more when presented with information about the content, the artist, and their technique compared to no information. The influence of this information did not apply equally to everyone. Its effects appeared in people who are open to experience and people with less exposure to art.
Contextual information also impacted Indian paintings more than American-European paintings. Without contextual information, North Americans showed an in-group bias, a tendency to show favoritism toward members of one's own group. In their study, Northern Americans liked American-European paintings more than Indian paintings when no information about the paintings was presented to them. But when the artworks were put into context, this in-group bias was reduced.
Museums or art galleries serve as information spaces where the museum architecture, the location of objects in its space, guided tours, audio guides, and the use of text labels all transmit information and knowledge to viewers to enhance the aesthetic experience. Further, given that the arts create a snapshot of a society or culture at a particular point in space and time, educators can take advantage of context to exert its impact on viewers. Multicultural art education could reduce stereotyping of " the other. " Would today's world be just a little bit kinder if we could view each other through art and learn a little bit more about different cultural contexts
27.The author mentioned Instagram users' example in the first paragraph to____.
A.introduce the topic
B.arouse readers' interest
C.emphasize the importance of words
D.compare the similarity between Instagram and Museums
28.What does the underlined word " subjects" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Themes B.Participants C.Courses D.Citizens
29.What can we learn from the passage
A.Viewers presented with contextual information liked abstract and representational paintings equally.
B.Contextual information can reduce in-group bias concerning American-European paintings.
C.Viewers with less exposure to art are less likely to be affected by contextual information.
D.Contextual information proved to have different impacts on paintings with different origins.
30.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Meet a Kinder World through Art
B.The Impact of the Sociocultural Information
C.Understanding Art within the Context
D.The More Informed, the Less Favoritism

There are many ways for diseases to spread. A sick person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves
Two incredibly talented teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they've developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.
The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99. 8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.
Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, which was noted by 17-year-old Sum Ming (Simon) Wong. He and his schoolmate Kin Pong (Michael)Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.
After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛) is known to kill bacteria. It's already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.
Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet (紫外线的) light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.
To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass. Each end fits into a bracket (托架). Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emiting diode (LED). From it comes UV light.
And here's the interesting part:The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.
The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about$13(about 81 yuan) to build.
Now, the invention is already gathering a fair amount of attention. It was a winning entry in this year's James Dyson Awards and is now an entry for the international grand prize phase of that competition. It certainly is promising to win since we have lived through a terrible epidemic.
31.The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to ______.
A.explain how most diseases are spread directly
B.explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively
C.introduce a new invention that can kill germs
D.remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands
32.Michael and Simon's door handle ______ .
A.is too expensive for ordinary families
B.is powered by the movement of its users
C.works better at night than in the daytime
D.is made of a metal that can take in UV light
33.The LED is placed inside the brackets to ______ .
A.produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria
B.supply enough power to the handle system
C.direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface
D.provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better
34.What is the author's attitude toward Michael and Simon's door handle system
A.Critical. . B.Negative. C.Neutral. D.Supportive.
Want to make people laugh 35. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if your goal is to tickle some funny bones.
Consider your audience. Your audience, whether it' s your parents in your living room or a paying crowd at an auditorium, must be able to connect with any situation you describe in your jokes. If they can' t relate to the joke, or if they don' t completely understand it, then it' s simply not funny to them. 36. If you have to explain a joke to someone, the person might eventually understand it, but he or she probably won' t think it' s funny. This is the reason that many jokes don' t translate well into another language. They rely on an understanding of a particular culture. You can translate the words but, without an appreciation for the background, many translated jokes aren' t very funny.
 37. There' s a reason that people say, "Stop me if you' ve heard this one" before telling a joke. If your audience already knows (or can guess) the end of a joke before you tell it, then it' s not going to make them laugh. People laugh at the end of a joke because they' ve been told a story and led toward its ending, (unconsciously) thinking about what will happen next or how it will end. 38. Surprise is part of the reason that you want to learn to tell jokes without laughing. If you laugh, then your listeners expect you to say something funny. If you tell a joke without laughing or smiling, then they' re more surprised when you get to the funny part.
Check your timing. Another important part of humor is timing, or delivering the punch line at the best possible moment. 39. The reason is that this builds tension. The listener knows the end is coming and is waiting for it. When you finally tell the punch line, the listener feels a sense of relief and is more and inclined to laugh.
A. Use surprise.
B. Choose your jokes.
C. Then you' ve got to know what' s funny.
D. Make sure your jokes are often told within limited time.
E. It' s often useful to pause before telling the last line of a joke.
F. When we hear something that wasn' t what we were expecting, we find it funny.
G. People love jokes that, based on their experience, make them say, "That' s so true!"
The signs appeared practically overnight. They'd been planted anywhere and everywhere—in front of homes, along sidewalks, around the neighborhood. Each featured just a few uplifting words in simple black type: "Don't Give Up", "You Are Not Alone", "We Will Get Through". The residents in Newberg, Oregon, had suffered huge loss from a major tornado this year, so the town of 25,000 instantly understood the messages. For days, what no one could figure out was who had planted them.
Amy Wolff had. At first, she didn't want anyone to connect her to them. For one thing, the 36-year-old mother of two didn't really feel it was her place to weigh in. However, losing her brother in an accident several years earlier had led her to do so. She planted the signs anonymously because she wanted them to be about their message, not any one person. It was compassion(同情) for compassion's sake. "I couldn't just do nothing," says Wolff.
Yet as Wolff saw the deep chord her signs struck with her neighbors, she decided to step forward to share her message publicly. Instantly, her inbox was flooded with requests for more signs.
That was in May 2017.Since then, the Don't Give Up Movement has spread from Newberg to the hearts and yards of people in every state and several countries. The signs have morphed(变化) into wristbands, bumper stickers, pins, stamps, etc. One of the most heartening elements of the movement is that it has gone viral in a remarkably human way. More and more people have taken action, planting the signs in their lawns, taking selfies, and then posting them to share.
Aware of the added emotional challenges isolation brings under the cloud of COVID-19, the Don't Give Up Movement has since offered to send letters of support to anyone in quarantine who needs it. The group received about 400 requests in just 24 hours. A young woman wrote that she struggled with mental illness and that shelter-in-place rules were especially hard on her and her family; she asked whether the Don't Give Up group could send her relatives a cheerful note. Wolff's message is about to grow yet again.
40.What
personal experience led Amy Wolff to plant the signs of hope
41.How
did the Don't Give Up Movement help people during COVID-19
42.What
does the underlined part it has gone viral mean
43.Please

由than(比……)

【答案】24.D
25.A
26.D

【答案】27.A

There are many ways for diseases to spread. A sick person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves "疾病的传播有许多途径。 Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they've developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact."
Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle."
Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet (紫外线的) light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within."Simon说,二氧化钛在紫外线照射下杀死细菌的效果最好。 To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass. Each end fits into a bracket. Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light."
In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs"在实验室测试中,他们的系统杀死了99.8%的细菌;第五段中的"After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide(二氧化钛)is known to kill bacteria. It's already used in many products." And here's the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door."
【答案】35.C;36.G;37.A;38.F;39.E
Want to make people laugh 想让人发笑吗?"和后句"Here are a few tips to keep in mind if your goal is to tickle some funny bones如果你的目标是挠一些有趣的骨头,这里有一些技巧需要记住",可知空格处回答了上句提出的问题,所以选项"C:然后你就知道什么是好笑的了"符号语境,故选C。
If they can' t relate to the joke, or if they don' t completely understand it, then it' s simply not funny to them如果他们不能理解这个笑话,或者他们没有完全理解,那么这对他们来说根本不好笑"。
If your audience already knows (or can guess) the end of a joke before you tell it, then it' s not going to make them laugh如果你的观众在你讲笑话之前就已经知道(或能猜到)笑话的结局,那么这不会让他们笑",可知本段着重说明讲笑话要出其不意,故选A。
If your audience already knows (or can guess) the end of a joke before you tell it, then it' s not going to make them laugh如果你的观众在你讲笑话之前就已经知道(或能猜到)笑话的结局,那么这不会让他们笑"和下文中的"Surprise is part of the reason that you want to learn to tell jokes without laughing. If you laugh, then your listeners expect you to say something funny. If you tell a joke without laughing or smiling, then they' re more surprised when you get to the funny part惊喜是你想学会不笑地讲笑话的部分原因。如果你笑了,那么你的听众希望你说一些有趣的话。如果你不笑不笑地讲笑话,那么当你进入有趣的部分时,他们会更惊讶",可知此处主要说明人们听到结局意外的笑话会笑,这与选项F"当我们听到一些不符合我们预期的事情时,我们会觉得很有趣"像符合,故选F。
39.根据下文"The reason is that this builds tension. The listener knows the end is coming and is waiting for it. When you finally tell the punch line, the listener feels a sense of relief and is more and inclined to laugh原因是这会造成紧张。听众知道结局即将到来,并在等待。当你终于说出了这句妙语时,听众会感到如释重负,更容易大笑",可知本段说明通过制造紧张达到讲笑话的目的,这与选项E"在讲笑话的最后一行之前停顿一下通常是有用的"相符,故选E。
五、书面表达
第一节 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
42.What

根据最后一段中的“Aware of the added emotional challenges isolation brings under the cloud of COVID-19, the Don't Give Up Movement has since offered to send letters of support to anyone in quarantine who needs it.” The Don't Give Up Movement offered / has offered to send letters of support. The Don't Give Up Movement has offered to send letters of support to anyone in quarantine who needs it./ It gave people the emotional support they needed.。
根据第四段中的“More and more people have taken action, planting the signs in their lawns, taking selfies, and then posting them to share.” It has become popular / widespread./The movement has become very popular / widespread.。
按要求表达清楚即可,如“My friend failed a test. Seeing her disappointment, I approached her and shared how I overcame setbacks in my study. After school, I wrote a cheerful note on a heart-shaped card and placed it on her desk. My help really worked and she gathered her courage to work harder.(我的朋友考试不及格。看到她的失望,我走近她,告诉她我是如何克服学习中的挫折的。放学后,我在一张心形卡片上写了一张愉快的字条,放在她的书桌上。我的帮助确实起作用了,她鼓起勇气更加努力地工作。)”。故答案为My friend failed a test. Seeing her disappointment, I approached her and shared how I overcame setbacks in my study. After school, I wrote a cheerful note on a heart-shaped card and placed it on her desk. My help really worked and she gathered her courage to work harder.。
