It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
→David, a student with brain disease, prepared himself for the big cross-country run at school.
→On the spot of the event, David was ready to give up the race.
→The author searched the crowd for the school coach.
→The author finally found out the reason why David wanted to give up and found David approaching him.
David:
(David had not missed a single practice; his usual toothy smile)
(David was standing by himself off to the side by fence; I turned to find him coming towards me.)
Author:
(I looked around and finally spotted David.)
(I bit back my frustration.)
(I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach.)
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I whispered gently, “No one can change you, except yourself. If you resolve to rise to the challenge, just follow your inner voice.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have been preparing for this event, which is why you are here now.” I continued. Hearing my words, David’s face lighted up and he nodded his head with a determined look. Learning about David’s decision, his coach gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started with the gun fired. It seemed that the runaway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child like David. However, David kept running unsteadily, though he was tripped over now and then. Classmates all gathered along the track, yelling “Come on! You can make it!”. Along with waves of encouragement, David finally made it to the finish line although he was the last one, which became less important. It was his bravery and determination that really counted.

Passage 1
My second year in college had started. I hadn’t decided whether to fly home for the new year yet. Although I had missed the holiday the year before, and I didn’t want to miss it two years in a row, I didn’t have the money for the ticket, plus I wasn’t sure I could get enough time off from my job. All that wondering changed when my mom called. She got right to the point: “Your grandmother isn’t doing well. I decided I should fly out there for the new year.” Mom was an only child, so that made sense to me. But I was not ready for what I heard next. “We decided you would want to come along so I covered your ticket.”
We arrived as scheduled. Mom was anxious to see her parents, especially her mother, who was really sick. After saying hello to them, we settled in the living room. Grandpa helped Grandma lie down again and told us we would have a big lunch at noon.
He went into the kitchen. Mom walked up and down in the living room. Finally, I asked her what the matter was. “He can’t cook,” she said, wondering. “How’s he supposed to fix a holiday meal for us ”I tried to reason with her.
“Can’t you smell dinner It smells good to me. Grandma is upstairs resting. Grandpa is the only one who could be cooking.” But we couldn’t see through the kitchen door. She had an idea. “Let’s go out to the front door and see from outside the window what’s going on inside. Then we will know who is really cooking.” Grandpa was very hard of hearing, so he didn’t hear us leave. It was a crazy plan, but I followed her around the house to the kitchen windows.

There we watched Grandpa fill water glasses, make coffee and do everything skillfully. Though he was slow because of old age, he cut, cook and mixed smoothly. He was even cooking a big Turkey in the oven. Mom was surprised to see all these. Then Grandpa brought the water, then the coffee, rolls and individual lettuce salads out to the dinning room. Speaking directly to my mom, he said, “I am going to get your mother up and bring her down to eat with us. You two go sit down at the dining room table.” So we did.
Looking at the nice food on the table, Mom asked, “When did you learn to cook ” Grandpa didn’t answer my mother’s question right away. Instead, he smiled and handed out food to each of us. I could tell he was very happy that we were here. Then he said that since Grandma was unable to cook due to health reasons, he began to learn to cook little by little. It made my mother and I feel at ease and less worried about their daily lives. I can’t help but have a kind of admiration for grandpa. Love and responsibility can change people, even in the old age.

Passage 2
One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, wanting to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country” The man again shook his head, a confused expression appeared over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in difficult situation.

Passage 3
I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn’t finish.
He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Liu said, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage ” I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Betty ”
Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can’t talk to your class ” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, “Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage.”

Passage 5
A man came home from work late, tired and impatient(不耐烦的), to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question ”
“Yeah sure, what is it ” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour ”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing ” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour ” pleaded (恳求) the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10 ”
The father was angry, “If the only reason you borrowed some money is to buy a silly toy, then you walk straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish (自私的). I work hard every day for such childish behavior.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often.

“Why do you want more money if you already have some ” the father shouted.
“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

Passage 6
A North Carolina woman had her first birthday party at 105 years old. Although she is so old, she never realized her dream—she wanted to have a birthday party. She also wished to receive 105 birthday cards, the same number as her age.
Lorene Summey is an elderly person at Somerset Court, a nursing home in Cherryville, North Carolina. Two months ago, a worker in the nursing home asked Summey what she would like for her upcoming birthday.
“We have an old lady that has a birthday next month and she will be 105 years old! She has never had a big birthday party before, so I asked her several months ago what she would like to do for her birthday. She said she would love to have square dance at her birthday party,” Jodie Lankford wrote in a Facebook post. “I think this wish is not quite too difficult, and we can help her to achieve.”
“She explained to us her experiences in her childhood. She said her sister could always go out to enjoy herself but she had to stay home most of the time to take care of the younger ones. She felt unfairly treated by her parents at the time,” she said. “She wanted her hair and makeup done, and she wanted to wear the same dress she wore when she was young.”
“She is also concerned about another thing—she doesn’t think she could have 105 birthday cards sent by mail to her for her birthday! I’ve told her that we will have more. I have made her believe that her wish is sure to come true,” Lankford added.
Last Friday night, her great birthday party began on the square of the nursing home. The time came for the old lady to realize her wish.

Summey looked especially beautiful that day. She wore a hat with jewelry and a dress with bright designs of flowers. She arrived at the party surrounded by a group of guests. Music started and the first program was the square dance. They celebrated the old lady’s birthday with a beautiful dance. Then, her friends and relatives gave her flowers, which kept her smiling all the time. At the end of the party, all the people present sang “Happy Birthday to You”.
Back to her room, the caregivers showed Summey the birthday cards. The old lady’s concerns about the number of her birthday cards turned out to be unnecessary. Instead of 105 birthday cards, she received more than 1,200, which came from people all over the country. There’s at least one card from every U.S. state. Other cards arrived from as faraway as England. From the bottom of her heart, Summery thanked each of the workers who took the time to make her birthday wish come true!

Passage 8
It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu an eight-year-old was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs, at the Khagal house. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school. “Manu, wake up! It’s school time!” shouted out Manu’s mother Akhila, from the kitchen. Manu pulled the blanket over him and ignored his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up. “Manu! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7. So please wake up and get ready. Manu continued sleeping.
Finally, after much pestering and pampering(纠缠和纵容), Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking(按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to his school bus.
“Phew! Manu didn’t miss his bus today” Akhila sighed. She was really concerned about her son. Manu couldn’t do anything on time, waking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. Akhila thought to herself “need to
work out a plan to teach him a lesson in self-discipline(自律). Repeated advice and warnings haven’t changed him.”
The next day it was the usual scene at the Khagal house except that there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was 7. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave. There was unusual confidence on Akhila’s face. Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’ clock. He ran down to the kitchen and cried out “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up The school bus has already left and I am really late for school today.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a math test today and Mrs. Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test.” The calm face of Akhila made Manu feel more anxious.

He stammered, “Mom...I am wrong. I promise you will see a new Manu tomorrow.” Nodding with satisfaction/Seeing the regret in his eyes, Akhila told him she would send him to school and Mrs. Mangat would give him another chance to take the test.

Everything ready, he went up to Akhila and took her hand, saying, “Mom, I will give the driver a surprise today.” Hearing the smile in his voice, Akhila nodded approvingly and kissed him on the forehead. That morning, no hurry, no pestering and pampering, no continuous honking. It was the first time that Manu had tasted the fruit of discipline. He would taste it every day! (161 words)

Passage 10
It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker said as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone would get really bored with listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny picked it up and wanted to return it to Lee, but she couldn’t catch up with him. When she arrived home, Jenny put it on, thinking about the magic. She was surprised that it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the minor, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magical.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker ask cd who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved, Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout “She’s stolen in y watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Passage 4
Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said,
“It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid(胆小的)to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily(颤抖地)forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics(歌词)after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward(胆小鬼)!Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

The man sat down and started to get even angrier
about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often.

Passage 7
Lost & Found
Emily was very sad because her little sister drew pictures on her science project. This was not the first time that her sister had ruined her school work. So, Emily requested her parents to buy her a study table with drawers (抽屉) where she could safely keep her books.
Emily’s parents could not afford to buy a new table. However, they agreed to buy her a second-hand table. One day after school, Emily’s mother took her to the second-hand store so that she could buy the table of her choice. By accident, she opened a drawer in an old black table. And, guess what A small plastic bag with some dollar bills!
“Maybe I have found somebody’s secret bag. Am I the luckiest twelve-year-old My birthday is coming up soon. With this money, I can buy myself great presents. And maybe I can even buy things for my family.” Emily thought. She stared at it with greedy(贪婪的) eyes and quickly pushed the bag to the end of the drawer. She told her mother she wanted that black table and later it was organized in her room.
When everybody left, she locked the room, quickly opened the drawer and took the plastic bag with dollars out. There was a note in the money bag. It seemed that some old lady was saving the money for her children and grandchildren. She could hear her heart beat louder and louder when finally she counted twelve thousand dollars.
But now, with the money she had, she thought that she would have to make up many lies to spend it. She would have to hide the money all the time. She thought, “This money is not meant for me.” She had felt the worst fear of getting caught from the moment she thought of stealing.

Akhila thought to herself “need to work out a plan to teach him a lesson in self-discipline(自律).
