Antarctica(南极洲) is the coldest place on the earth, but every year thousands of tourists go there. Why do they go There are no famous buildings, no hotels and no restaurants. There are some beaches, but nobody wants to go swimming. Why do people want to take a vacation in Antarctica
Most people go to see the birds, the animals and the amazing scenery. There are seals(海豹) lying on the ice. There are whales swimming in the ocean. You can also watch penguins jumping into water from icebergs(冰山). It's one of the last untouched places on the planet.
It's possible to visit Antarctica by plane, but most people go there by ship. That's because the ships are comfortable places to stay, and the journey(by sea) is part of the vacation. All tourists visit Antarctica in the summer. In the winter it's too cold for visitors, but in the summer—from November to March—it's warmer than many people think. In some parts of Antarctica in January, it's about 0℃.So it can be warmer there than it is in Beijing in January.

Last year I went to Nepal (尼泊尔) for three months to work in a hospital. I think it’s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it is difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday, so I decided to go into the jungle (丛林) and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me. We started our trip at six in the morning with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to see better, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the daytime.
Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We moved nearer and found a dead deer. This was the tiger's lunch! I started to feel very frightened.

When it comes to the letter grade on your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so
In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for“fail”.The word“fail”happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E. The fact”.Some schools have U grade for“unsatisfactory”,or I grade for “incomplete”.
Even with all this said, we should also point out that E grade actually has been
used pretty commonly throughout the history of letter grades in the US.
The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897,they began to use the following grading scale:
A: 95-100%(excellent) B: 85-94%(good) C: 76-84%(fair)
D: 75%(barely passed) E: below 75%(failed)
We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.
Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F.There is no evidence(证据) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.
Why do we have letter grades Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.
Today, more and more people argue that letter grades don’t fully reflect(反映) student learning。However,as teachers try to improve grading methods, many parents continue to favor the letter grades they got as kids, they are familiar(熟悉) and easy for parents to understand. So while they might not be perfect, the letter grades probably aren’t going away any time soon.

Music not only gives you something to sing and dance to, but also can make you feel happier. Scientists say that music can help to relax people’s mind and even help to relieve(痛苦) pain. How does music work its magic It is the fact that music can adjust(调节) our mood(心情). Recently, there is a scientific research to what we have always known about music. The studies have shown that when people are excited or happy they are more helpful. The opposite (相反的情况)happens when people feel aggressive(好斗的) or under stress. The use of music can influence how helpful people can be.
Dr. Adrian North made a study with 256 university students.Half the group took exercise
in the gymnasium listening to music which can bring happiness and the other half exercised
to aggressive music. When leaving the gym, the students were asked to hand out flyers(传单) in support of the local disabled athlete’s foundation(残疾运动员基金会).
The results showed that nearly half of the group that listened to happy music were willing to (愿意) hand out flyers. But less than 20% in the group that heard the aggressive music were willing to do so. This study suggests that our choice of music can influence our willingness to cooperate(合作). While a study also shows that productivity (生产效率) can be increased with the right choice of background music in the workplace. As music stimulates(刺激)worker’s mind, job satisfaction is often positively influenced. Other studies have shown that workers who are in a good mood have more job satisfaction than those in a bad mood.
These studies show that music can have a powerful influence on a person’s ability to cooperate. Moods have a direct influence(直接影响) on cooperation and job satisfaction. These factors also have a direct relationship to the success of a business.
