Given Australia’s size and the fact that early settlements were far apart, Australian society is remarkably homogeneous (同种的). Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents. However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city dwellers and the country people. Almost 90 per cent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve pockets of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modern, with new buildings reflecting the country’s youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep’s back”, a reference to wool being the country’s main money earner. However, the wool industry is no longer dominant. Much of Australia’s relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a self-deprecating sense of humor. On the whole, Australia is a society without hierarchies (等级制度), an attitude generally held to stem from its prisoner beginnings.
Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia’s liberal postwar immigration policies led to an influx of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans.
The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a ‘blend of nations’ and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is justifiably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.
8.What does the writer mean by saying “It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents.” in the first paragraph
A.Australians speak Standard English with no local accents whatsoever.
B.You have to practice a lot to learn to understand the different accents.
C.The Australian regional accents are very difficult to understand indeed.
D.There is not much difference between the accents in different areas of Australia.
9.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A.Most Australians have ancestors who were prisoners.
B.The Australian economy is dependent on sheep exports.
C.The majority of people living in Australia come from Europe.
D.The pace of life is different in the city and in the country.
10.The underlined pronoun “it” in the final paragraph refers to “_______”.
A.Community B.racism C.blend of Nations D.Southeast Asia
11.We can infer from the passage that _____.
A.there are no signs of Australia’s colonial past in its modern cities
B.Australia’s recent immigration policy encourages immigrants from Southeast Asia
C.immigrants from Southeast Asia have brought racial problems
D.“riding on sheep’s back” resulted in slow development in rural communities

You can shine a light for others. 16 Sometimes, that’s all someone needs to get through a difficult time. You can help even more with ideas and solutions to apply creatively to their own problems.
17 It’s uncomfortable to admit to others your failures, struggles or other moments of weakness. That’s true for everyone, yet opening yourself up to moments of weakness is surprisingly satisfying. It requires courage and being courageous requires practice.
People will support you. 18 We all do.So why not share the ways you’ve faced great difficulties and bounced back If no one knows your struggles then they’ll never know to cheer for you or what you’ve overcome to reach where you are today.
Another great aspect of sharing your story is that it helps you remember the lessons you learned. 19 Understanding what happened and how you handled situations can provide you clearly with the ways on how to do things better and move forward. You can also share key experience alongside your story so others can learn, too.
A.It helps you find your voice.
B.You love a good comeback story.

Sapphire Fish lived with her mom, dad, sister Mariana, and baby brother Matthew in a blue house across the street from the Elizabeth River. Sapphire loved the water. Maybe it was because her last name was Fish.
Sapphire liked to make sailboats out of paper. Taking a plain square, Sapphire folded and folded until two wide sails appeared. Then she tested the boats in the bathtub. No matter how hard she tried, though, Sapphire couldn’t keep the boats from slowly sinking into the water.
So Sapphire folded more and more paper and made bigger or smaller sails. But still the boats tipped over and disappeared underneath the surface of the water. Sometimes, the boats sank very slowly. Other times, an entire boat got pulled quickly underneath the water, almost like an invisible hand was grabbing it.
One day, the sky grew dark and the wind whistled against the house. Rain fell all day. And all night. In the afternoon, the rain finally stopped. Sapphire looked outside the living room window. There was water everywhere! The river ran right into the street and was filling up Sapphire’s front porch (前门廊).
The next day, Sapphire put on her blue boots that squeaked when she walked. She ran outside to the muddy front yard, where the river had been the day before.
Sapphire looked down at her feet and noticed something shiny and silvery. The most beautiful silver fish was wiggling in the wet mud. It was trying to get back to its home in the river.
Sapphire was scared. She knew that fish couldn’t breathe out of water. Either she had to return the fish to his family in the river or bring the fish inside her house and give him water. But how Her mother had forbidden her to walk past the tree in the front yard. Waves of water still covered the street. It was too dangerous.
She couldn’t put him in a bowl of water from her house. The water from her sink (水槽) was very different from the river water the fish was used to. He might get sick living in the bowl.

35.but 36.to prove 37.have used 38.relics 39.who/that 40.are being disturbed/are disturbed 41.of 42.agreement 43.the 44.stepping
故填but。
故填to prove。
故填have used。
故填who/that。
故填are being disturbed/are disturbed。
空格处需要介词of构成短语“take photos of…”,意为“给…… 故填of。
故填the。
45.Dear John,
I’m writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for what you did for me last Saturday. It was your detailed explanation that made me get a better understanding of Western art.
From your introduction, not only did I know the development of Western art but also I was deeply impressed with the paintings of the famous painters, through which I felt the beauty of art. What’s more, I have become interested in Western painting and already started to further explore the mystery of Western art. Maybe in the future, I will produce a work of art by myself.
Thank you again for your wonderful explanation. Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

46.Suddenly, Sapphire had an idea. She rushed into the room and fetched all the paper boats that she had made. She believed these abandoned boats would be put to good use. She chose one of the boats that sank very slowly and gently put the fish into the “slowly sinking” boat. Finally, the boat floated on the water of the street. Sapphire hoped that the boat would not tip over until it sent the fish into the Elizabeth River.
The wind pushed the boat along, past the street, and the boat was about to enter the Elizabeth River. Sapphire was so excited that she shouted for her mother to come out and look. Finally, they saw the boat sink into the river. They seemed to see the shiny thing dart into the river. Sapphire felt that she had made the best use of her little boat. She saved a fish and let it go home. She thought it was her destiny with the fish and the boat.
