It may seem hard to leave Sydney’s attractions and sights, but when the urge arises to explore beyond the city, many exceptional day trips await travelers.
Scenic World
On a visit to the World heritage-listed Blue Mountains, enjoy clean fresh air and breathtaking landscapes of ancient rainforests. Scenic World in Katoomba is the best way to access the beauty of this region. Besides climbing, you can choose cablecars, elevated boardwalks or the Scenic Railway — the world’s steepest train travelling through a rock tunnel, to reach the mountain top.
Featherdale Wildlife Park
Located 45 minutes west of Sydney, Featherdale has the world’s largest collection of Australian native birds, mammals (哺乳动物) and reptiles (爬行动物). Situated in a bushland environment, Featherdale provides a unique opportunity for up-close animal interactions (互动). Hand-feed a kangaroo, have breakfast with a koala and check out a huge variety of species including dingos, emus, penguins and more.
Royal National Park
Established in 1879, the Royal is the world’s second-oldest national park. Located an hour’s drive south of Sydney, the beaches are unspoilt, crowd-free and great for surfing or swimming. There’s dramatic scenery along the way with a range of unique heritage attractions. Bushwalking, boating, canoeing and fishing are also popular activities.
The Hawkesbury River
An hour north-west of Sydney, the Hawkesbury is one of New South Wales’ best-kept secrets. Experience what this picturesque region of waterways, farmland and national parks has to offer — from waterskiing and bushwalking to horse riding and river cruises (航游).
21. What can you do when visiting Scenic World

One morning, my four-year-old daughter and I were getting ready to leave the house when she suddenly yelled “Idiot!” right at me. As I processed the word, I noticed she was upset. Tears streamed down her face as she half whispered and half yelled “you are an IDIOT Mama.” Total silence followed as we looked at each other. We were staring at each other for so long, and I nearly forgot to breathe out and in again. Idiot. How could my daughter call me an idiot
There are many behaviors that really push parents’ buttons. Disrespectful, rude words tend to top the list. The wrong response to such rude remarks is often a serious warning. But I didn’t offer any serious remarks.
I realized that my daughter’s intention wasn’t to disrespect me. She was expressing the disconnection(疏离). And punishment doesn’t solve disconnection. It creates more of it. Her choice of word said it all. She was annoyed. She sensed the stress. I needed to hear her. I was being careless. I was the one being rude to her.
So, why punish our children when they need guidance We must know that the words we use matter, and become our children’s words too. The words include those we use to handle emotional overload. Idiot is a word I regretfully must admit to using when I’m extremely annoyed. Not at my children, but yes, they have heard me say it. So, instead of punishing my daughter for misbehavior, I chose to focus on her real message: Idiot means that “Mom, you are stressing me out!”.
No blame. No criticizing her choice of words. Just focus on our relationship. I admitted my ignoring her, and we hugged and kissed each other. I walked into her play school with interest and was ready to see all her current projects.
Don’t be afraid to look beyond misbehavior, find the true message, trust the power of connection, and show kindness and forgiveness.
24. After hearing her daughter’s words, the author ________.
A. couldn’t believe it B. gave her a warning
C. lost her temper D. had a talk with her
25. What did the daughter really want to say to her mom
A. You are an idiot. B. You are ignoring me.
C. You always punish me. D. You teach me the rude words.
26. From the text we can conclude that the mother is ________.
A. bad-tempered B. brave
C. sensitive D. wise
27. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To settle conflicts between parents and children.
B. To explain why children disrespect their parents.
C. To suggest a positive response to children’s misbehavior.
D. To encourage readers to express their true feelings.
C
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
C. Your mass is affected by many factors.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body composition will change.
D. Your body fat will increase.
30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 140 pounds. B. 100 pounds.
C. 60 pounds. D. 30 pounds.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
D
It is hard to imagine that plants or animals could ever exist on Mars. But scientists continue to look for evidence. NASA, America’s space agency, has found evidence that, a long time ago, there was surface water on the Mars. Scientists believe water is necessary for life as we know it. So since that discovery, they have been looking for chemicals that would be present if there once was or still is life on the planet.
At a December 13 meeting in California, NASA scientists reported an important discovery on Mars. They said for the first time that they had found very small amounts of boron(硼). Boron is important because it could help build RNA molecules(分子). And RNA molecules are important because they are one of the basic building parts for life.
One of the next steps in the scientists’ search for life on Mars comes soon. The next spacecraft is planned to launch. It will bring rocks from Mars back to Earth. Scientists in Britain are getting ready for those Mars rocks now. Before this, using a powerful microscope(显微镜), they have already examined 200-million-year-old volcanic rocks found deep in the Pacific Ocean. The microscope showed holes on the rocks caused by tiny living things called microbes(微生物). Microbes are the oldest form of life on Earth.
Next, the scientists in Britain will examine rocks which contain ancient material from Mars. The material comes from a time when Mars would have been more likely to support life. The scientists hope to get the same findings in the rocks from Mars as the ones they saw in the ocean rocks. If they do, they predict that the rocks coming directly from Mars will also show signs of life. That, in turn, could finally prove that we are not alone in the universe.
32. What caused scientists to look for evidence of life on Mars
A. The discovery of plants. B. The discovery of chemicals.
C. The discovery of RNA molecules. D. The discovery of surface water.
33. Why is the discovery of boron on Mars important
A. It is hardly seen on the earth. B. It might cause the holes on the rocks.
C. It might prove the existence of life. D. It is the most necessary part of life.
34. What have the scientists found through examining the rocks
A. a powerful microscope B. holes caused by microbes
C. volcanic rocks D. ancient material from Mars
35. What is the best title for this text
A. Scientists Try to Look for Life on Mars
B. Does Surface Water Really Exist on Mars
C. A Discovery of Life in The Pacific Ocean
D. Boron---An Important Chemical Supporting Life

Mercy for a thief
A frantic call came into Jimmy Gilleece’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was tucked inside.
Gilleece, the barkeeper, spent several hours watching surveillance footage(监控录像). He noticed a young man in a hoodie approach the bench that the woman had just sat on. He put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page.
Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from his sister. Prather told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, after talking with the teen, Gilleece knew Prather wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece thought Prather was more of a kid than a criminal. He thought he had to help him somehow. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could probably be sent to the jail.
The next day, Gilleece had two local divers search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet. A policewoman was waiting for them there. More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Prather looked nervously at the water. And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Prather jumped up excitedly. Even the policewoman was happy. When Gilleece called the wallet’s owner, she burst out crying.
“Most people would have given the clip to police, and he chose to help me,” Prather told CBS News. “I say thank you to him every day.”

Dear classmates,
It is my great honor to talk about a critical issue, the protection of endangered animals. We humans are blessed with such diverse species. Losing them would not only mean losing a part of our planet's natural beauty, but it would also disturb the ecological balance and harm our environment.
However, the current situation is alarming. Many species are facing extinction due to human activities like habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change.
Therefore, immediate measures must be taken! Firstly, we should spread awareness about the importance of conservation. Secondly, supporting organizations working towards wildlife protection is vital. Moreover, we can also adopt more environmentally friendly habits, like reducing waste and recycling.
Let’s work together to protect these irreplaceable treasures of our planet. Thanks for listening!

W: Well, the place we are standing in is very near the coffee houses, just 200 meters down the second street. We are standing here at the south entrance of the second street. Left to us is a gas station. If you walk straightly along the second street and turn right, you will find a school after a 100 meters’ walk. And my ladies and gentlemen, pay attention! Right opposite the school is the famous shopping center of the capital. Anyway, the most important thing — our hotel! It’s at the end of the second street in the north, about 400 meters farther than the school.
M: Excuse me. I hear the central park is very famous. Is it far from the hotel
W: If you go out of the hotel and turn right, after about a 200 meters’ walk, you will see the central park.

W: Joe, you look worried Is everything OK
M: Honestly Not really. I just got my grade on my physics, and I failed it horribly.
W: I’m sorry to hear that. But don’t feel too bad. It was a pretty hard test, and there’s still half the term left. I’m sure you can turn things around.
M: Thanks. But I don’t know. All my classes are so hard this term. I just don’t have enough time to study for it. I had my chemistry mid-term exam the day before. And I had to write a ten-page paper for my literature class over the weekend. By the time I got finished with all of the other tests and projects, I couldn’t catch up on this class. I even thought about withdrawing from this class. But we’re pretty far into the term now. If I withdraw, it’ll show on my academic record.
W: Well, there’s a study group for this class. You know, we meet after each class for about an hour. And I’m sure Professor Smith would be happy to help you out during his office hours. If you really need to pass, I think that would be helpful.

W: Thanksgiving is one of America’s most popular holidays. It is a day for expressing thanks for all the good things in life. It is also a day for family reunions. On that day many people travel long distances to get together with their families.
But not everyone can spend Thanksgiving with his or her family. Today we’ll introduce a couple, Joan and Sandy Wilson, who could not afford to take time out to visit their parents, their uncles and aunts one year. They regretted not being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with all their family members. But soon they met other people who also were separated from their families. So the Wilsons began holding a yearly Thanksgiving dinner for what they called their “extended family”. This included people in their community.
The group has grown over the years. To accommodate all the guests, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson now have to add small tables to their large one in the big dining room. At first, many of their friends brought their babies and young children. Now some of the first guests are grandparents. They often bring their grandchildren.
Like many other Americans, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and their visitors enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking. The traditional meal usually includes a turkey. Other traditional Thanksgiving foods served with turkey are sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pies.成都外国语学校高一英语12月月考 单句语法填空
