Volunteer with Philly Food Rescue (PFR)
In one hour, you can do something to reduce food waste and resource local community. Download the Philly Food Rescue app to get started.
What’s the service opportunity
PFR is the sustainability, food recovery, and donations arm of Share Food Program. You’ll use your own car (or bike) to rescue leftover food from a grocery store, restaurant, or farmers’ market, delivering it to the matched nonprofit takers. Those include senior centers, shelters, schools, and more. You can claim a one-time or weekly food rescue.
What difference does food rescue make
PFR works to increase access to fresh food for our neighbors. Our team recovers half a million pounds of food every month thanks to volunteers like you. We resource more than 283 partners across Philadelphia, its suburbs, and South Jersey, impacting food security and sustainability every day of the week.
What’s required
● If driving, a driver’s license and insurance are needed. For smaller food rescues, a bike may do.
● Food rescue volunteers should be able to lift at least 30 pounds.
● Clear the trunk and back seat to make space for boxes or bags of food.
● Complete the food rescue within its scheduled window.
Additional information:
● PFR matches donations within five miles to keep food local, honor volunteers’ time, and ensure food safety.
● You’re welcome to bring a friend or child as a passenger to help with loading, unloading, and delivery.
● Questions Ask Britt at bkorn@sharefoodprogram.org or (215)301-3734.

I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug(大杯) and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here Lettuce or hope
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay (腐败), or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
24. Why did the author soak the stub in water
A. To decorate the nice mug. B. To hope that it would grow.
C. To make a video in person. D. To remove his bad mood.
25. What can we infer from paragraph two
A. This lettuce showed no sign of recovery.
B. This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C. Within days, I could see tiny root thread fell down.
D. I could still see several cuts where there used to be leaves.
26 How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed.
27. What can we learn from Monty
A. Never being afraid to restart yourself. B. Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C. Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D. Giving freedom to the heart in a way.

In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Some animals such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. The Cory’s shearwater is an oceangoing seabird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.
Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.
But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults——but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.
“Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. It describes animals’ habitats. B. It compares different species.
C. It talks about migration models. D. It introduces a tracking technology.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The opening for learning and practice.
B. The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C. The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
D. The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
30. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters
A. They travel as much as adult birds. B. They lower the speed for exploration.
C. They move in a predictable manner. D. They look for a course with their parents.
31. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Exploration refinement contributes to birds’ adaptability.
B. Man-made changes make migration easier.
C. Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track.
D. A combination of strategies assures migration success
D
Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. Astonishing numbers of people with years of schooling are in effect illiterate. This month’s Ljubljana Manifesto (宣言) explains: “The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.”
That’s frightening, because “higher-level reading” has been essential to civilization. It enabled the enlightenment and an international increase in empathy. Without it, we would suffer a lot. As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” When you read a book on paper, you can be entirely inside the experience, absorb hundreds of pages of details thoroughly and begin to capture the world’s complexity. Online, says Maryanne Wolf of UCLA, we are “skimming, scanning, scrolling”. The medium is the message: doing deep reading on your phone is as hard as playing tennis with your phone. Recently, a bright 11-year-old told me I was wasting time on books: he absorbed more information faster from Wikipedia. He had a point. But digital readers also absorb more misinformation and seldom absorb fine perspectives.
In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
32. What can we learn about digital reading from paragraph 1
A. Digital reading has solved the problem of illiteracy.
B. Digital reading has lessened the practice of deep reading.
C. Digital reading has made deep reading accessible to wider readers.
D. Digital reading has aroused a greater appreciation for deep reading.
33. What is the purpose of the figures used in paragraph 2
A. To display the popularity of digital reading.
B To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
C. To present the unfavorable situation of literacy.
D. To stress the illiterate’s lower-level reading skills.
34. What does the underlined word “demerits” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Effects. B. Depths. C. Features. D. Drawbacks.
35. What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A. Advantages of digital reading. B. Benefits of higher-level reading.
C. Ways to encourage digital reading. D. Measures to practice deep reading.

It was in the early morning of one summer holiday that I was flying to Bali, Indonesia to see volcanoes. And my best friend was waiting for my arrival there. When I got off the plane and stepped out of the airport, I was thinking how unbelievable it was to stand in front of the spectacular volcano mountain. The imaginary sights distracted me, for a moment, from my current problem.
Only when I stood by the bus station to Bali, did I realize that I had no enough cash on me. The only ATM nearby didn’t seem to have any power, and I nervously looked down at my credit card, my only lifeline. I hoped there might be a way to convince the bus driver to let me on and pay him once I reached the destination and got the cash from my friend.
When the bus door opened, I stood behind a young lady and her little girl. I started to worry, wondering what I’d do if the credit card didn’t make the cut. They boarded the bus, paid in cash and sat down in the first row. When I approached the driver and held out my credit card, he looked at me seriously and shook his head.
“I don’t have any money,” I said. I showed him my wallet to confirm that I was telling the truth. He stared back blankly and then said no. I still wanted to convince him again. I pulled up my flight information on my phone and showed it to him. I pointed to the nearby ATM and signaled that it didn’t work. This time, he looked at me and apologized to me. “I’m really sorry. Can you make way for the other passengers ”
I stood aside. “What should I do ” I hesitated. It was the first time that I had visited the city. I was unfamiliar with everything around me. I searched the locations of other ATMs in the area. They were too far away. It would take me at least two hours to get there on foot. I really didn’t want my friend to wait for me too long, but unfortunately, I had to.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I was about to get off the bus when the young lady stood up.

M: How long did you live in the States
W: We were there for two years, in New York. We had a wonderful time there. What we liked best was that we could work and yet still lead a normal life. I mean, the shops are open till ten o’clock, such as food shops, chemists. And some supermarkets are open 24 hours a day. Most shops don’t open as early as in England. They don’t open until about 10:00 in the morning.
M: Did you make many friends
W: Well, that’s what’s interesting. We made more friends in our two years there than we have after two years of living back here in London. I think Americans are more open. They speak their minds directly, not like the British, who might think one thing and say another.

M: Well, I’m glad you got here in the end. Now we should probably get going as fast as we can, because I’ve got another interview at 12:00.Why do you want to work for us
W: Well, I’m a bit bored where I’m working at the moment, so I’d really like a change. Your company is bigger, and the salary’s better than the job I’ve got. Most importantly, I like the unfixed working hours, because I find it really hard to get up in the morning!
M: And where do you want to be in five years’ time
W: Australia, I hope! I don’t want to leave my family in the long term. I’m planning to stay here in Britain for a year or two, but to be honest I really want to move somewhere hot and sunny, like Mexico. But my mom won’t let me go.

Bill Wales is a 23-year-old student in his third year at London University in Britain. His parents also live in London, but he left home when he was eighteen and has been on his own ever since. He works full time during holidays and takes all jobs at weekends on the campus to pay for his tuition and support himself. After his second year at university he had to stop his studies at London for a year in order to earn enough money to take up his studying again. In the five years since he left home he’s moved house twice. The first place he got was a room rented from a family with three young noisy children. After he started going to university he found he couldn’t study at home so he moved to another place. He shared an apartment with two other students and paid for his own room. This place was good. But he was constantly short of money, so when his landlord raised the rent of his room by 10 dollars two months ago, he again decided he had to find a new place.

26. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed.
27. What can we learn from Monty
A Never being afraid to restart yourself. B. Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C. Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D. Giving freedom to the heart in a way.
B 25. B 26. A 27. A

根据第一段“I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.(我在厨房里切生菜时,突然想起看了一段视频,讲的是把生菜茎浸泡在水中能长出一种全新的蔬菜。于是我拿出一个宽口马克杯,把生菜茎放进去,给它一点水)”可知,作者把生菜泡在水中的原因是希望能看到它生长,故选B。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living!(第一片小叶子从它的中心伸出来。希望的小绿旗。被打倒了,但没有被打败。生菜没有放弃生存!)”可推知,这棵生菜还在挣扎求生。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth.(如果我是一棵处于类似状况的生菜,我会先怀疑地评估一下自己的状况,然后再开始全面生长)”可知,如果作者处于生菜的状况之下,作者会犹豫不决,故选A。
根据最后一段“The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.( 重新开始的前景令人沮丧。但是我的莴苣朋友蒙蒂在前面带路。我只希望能像你一样勇敢)”可知,蒙蒂告诉我们:要勇敢,不要惧怕重新开始, 故选A。
C
C It talks about migration models.
C 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据文章第一段“In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Some animals such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration. (在世界各地的栖息地,动物们会周期性地放下一切,步行、飞行或游泳到一个新的地方。一些动物,如鲸鱼和鹅,通过跟随父母来学习迁徙路线。其他鸟类,包括小型鸣禽,通过遗传密码获得迁徙的距离和方向。有些动物利用基因和文化的结合来指导它们的迁徙。)”可知,第一段主要描述了动物的不同的迁徙模式。故选C。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. (科里的海鸥寿命很长,很少能在9岁之前成功繁殖后代。这为学习和实践发展它们的迁移模式留下了空间。)”可知,上文提到了该海鸥长寿的特点以及其不断开发迁徙模式。由此可知,划线单词“this”指的是该海鸥形成这种迁徙模式的方法。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults——but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course. (年轻的科里海鸥能飞得和成年海鸥一样快——但它们不会这样,这表明年轻的海鸥会做更多的探索,随着它们成熟并适应一个首选的路线,这种探索会逐渐消失。)”可知,年轻的科里海鸥为了进行更多的探索而降低了自己的飞行速度。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.” (Barbara Frei说:“尽管与其他策略相比,这种方法似乎效率较低,但在一个由于不可预测的人为变化而迅速变化的世界中,探索改进可能对鸟类和其他生物有益。重复最近成功的行为可能比依赖很久以前完善但可能不再安全的模式更安全。”)”可知,这种鸟类的这种探索改进虽然效率低,但是更有助于鸟类在这个瞬息万变的世界存活下去,也就是说探索迁徙路线会有助于鸟类的适应性。故选A。
B. To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
B 33. C 34. D 35. D
根据第一段中“Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. (数字阅读似乎正在破坏“深度阅读”的习惯。)”和“The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.(数字领域可能比历史上任何时候都促进了更多的阅读,但它也提供了许多诱惑,以肤浅和分散的方式阅读——甚至根本不阅读。这越来越危及更高水平的阅读。)”可知,数字阅读削弱了深度阅读的实践。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
根据划线词所在句“Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” (《卢布尔雅那宣言》的专家们记录了数字阅读的demerits:“最近各种各样的研究表明,批判性阅读、有意识阅读、慢读、非战略性阅读和长篇阅读的数量正在下降。”)”中“a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading”可知,这些都是数字阅读盛行带来的问题和弊端,所以划线词demerits与drawbacks同义,意为“缺点,弊端 ”。
根据最后一段“In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. ____36____Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. ____37____ Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it
____38____ When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted.____39____But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”.____40____ However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.
A. You can avoid regret.
B. It makes sense to move forward confidently.
C. Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream.
D. It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate.
E. It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose.
F. For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages.
G. You have enough life experience and knowledge to make changes to pursue your dream.
C 37. F 38. A 39. E 40. D

根据上文“You may come up with all kinds of excuses. (你可能会想出各种各样的借口。)”提到不想付诸行动的各种借口,可知本空要谈到解决这一问题的方案。下文“Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want. (下面是为什么你应该相信你可以利用吸引力法则得到你想要的任何东西的原因。)”提到建议和方法,可知本空是对下文的概括。选项C项“Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream. (幸运的是,事实是,追逐梦想永远不会太晚。)”起到承上启下作用。故选C项。
【37题详解】
上文“Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. (通常情况下,你可以把追求梦想看成是一系列重要而又小的步骤。)”说明可以把追求梦想看成重要而又小的步骤。F项“For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages. (例如,挑战自己,把通往成功的道路分为十个阶段。)”为具体举例解释这一方法,和上文内容意思一致,为上文内容的语意递进。故选F项。
【38题详解】
该空为段首,总结该段内容。根据下文“When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (当人们在弥留之际接受采访,或在自传中讲述他们的生活时,我们常常发现,主要的遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”可知,遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。A项“You can avoid regret. (你可以避免后悔。)”总结下文内容,引出下文中讲到的人们往往会因为什么而后悔。故选A项。
上文“In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”提到没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西会使自己感到遗憾。下文“But you don’t ever need to feel this way! (但是你不需要有这种感觉!)”说明空处提到了某种感觉。E项“It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose. (感觉自己还没有找到自己真正的目标是很痛苦的。)”为对上文内容的语意递进,同时引起下文,下文中提到的“feel this way (这种感觉)”指的就是该句中的内容。故选E项。
【40题详解】
上文“Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. (另一个常见的担忧是,如果你追随梦想,你会“倒退”。)”提到追随梦想,你会有“倒退”的这种担忧。下文“However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating. (然而,在你的旧生活中,那些看起来像是倒退的步骤,可以更有效、更准确地被视为你正在创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。)”为转折,说明这些担忧可能是创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。D项“It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate. (当人们处于自己讨厌的职业巅峰时,这种情况就会出现。)”起到承上启下作用,说明上文提到的情况。故选D项。

The Student’s Union
Dear friends,
Do you know the earth is becoming warmer and warmer It is human activity that has caused global warming. A low - carbon lifestyle is the key to handling this big problem.
To fulfill it, we should do our part in our daily life. First, turn off the taps, the lights and so on when we are not using them. It is a good idea to recycle everything recyclable in our daily life. What’s more, motor vehicles use a lot of energy—so walk or ride a bike if we can. It also makes sense to stick to the habit of setting the temperature of our air conditioners at about 26℃ in summer.

Surprised and excited, I looked into her eyes and said, “You are so generous to help me out. I’m more than grateful to your deed.” Hearing what I said, the young lady just smiled and paid for me. “Thank you very much, lady. After getting off, I’ll ask my friend to pay you back.” I said thankfully. “Just forget it.” She said.
Once we arrived at Bali, I followed the young lady and her little girl off the bus. My friend was waiting for me eagerly. Seeing me, he approached and asked worriedly, “Why are you so late What happened to you ” I explained the whole story to him briefly and said, “Don’t worry too much. I’m OK now. Please lend me some money to pay back to the generous lady.” But when I gave her the money, she refused it at first. Realizing our insistence, she accepted it finally.
