La Gomera is the only place in the world which has a whistle(口哨)language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the long history of the island. There are many deep valleys(峡谷)on the island. A person on one side of a valley cannot easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and make others hear him. The people living on the island usually have good teeth，and this helps them whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.
We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island，and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill，the whistle language takes the place of the telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle(放牛)on a hillside whistles to a man fishing on his boat. The last one is able to tell the doctor in town what happens. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost.
The whistle language is hundreds of years old，and it will live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV gets to the island, the people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.

You want to run across the street to catch the bus which is leaving soon But wait! You’d better not. If a policeman sees you, you’ll have to pay a fine (罚款).
New traffic laws (交通法) say that if people cross the street when the light is red, they can be fined as much as 50 yuan.
Traffic accidents killed more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have more cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets safer.
The law has new rules for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to slow down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must stop to let them pass.
There are rules for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls while driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are also against the law.
