When you want to travel for the first time, you’re a bit afraid to travel on your own and naturally prefer to travel with other people. So you ask your friends to join you. As you show them the photos you discovered online, you are sure you will get a travel partner or two.
But interestingly enough, the first friend you ask, perhaps your closest friend, turns you down. And you move on to the next friend, but he too tells you he doesn’t want to join you at all.
Maybe you decide to postpone your trip, hoping that one of your friends will change his mind. Maybe you decide to forget about your trip, fully convinced (确信) that the only way you would ever be able to have the confidence to travel is with a friend or travel partner by your side.
If that is the case, then I’m quite happy that you are reading this article. Here’s my advice to you. You may be on your own when you board your flight, but once you arrive, you’ll never actually be alone.
That’s how travel works, so don’t be afraid to travel on your own. You’re going to meet people when you travel. In fact, meeting new people is probably one of the easiest things to do when travelling because you quickly have connection with every other traveller. All travellers are strangers in a foreign land and as a result, we often would love to have the chance to travel with a new friend.
Maybe you’ll meet someone at a cafe, in shop, on a bus, or just in the street. Maybe you’ll end up wandering around a city for an afternoon with this person and then saying goodbye. And the next day, you’ll probably meet someone else to share new experiences with as well. Perhaps you’ll meet someone and decide to travel together for a couple of days or weeks.
The point is, you’ll meet plenty of people in just about every single corner of the world, even if you’re the shyest person on the planet. And before long, you’ll understand why I always give the same answer every time I’m asked what it’s like to always be traveling alone. I just say, “I maybe travel alone but I’m never really on my own.”
44.What can we learn from the passage
A.You prefer someone to go with you when you travel for the first time.
B.Your closest friend is always willing to go for a trip with you.
C.The photos online will surely make your friends interested in travelling.
D.It is no fun if there is no close friend travelling with you.

A.give up B.prepare for C.put off D.cut off
46.Which of the following is true
A.Meeting new people is the most difficult thing when travelling.
B.People would love to have the chance to travel with a new friend.
C.A shy person won’t be able to meet any new people when travelling.
D.If you board your flight alone, you will travel alone all the way.
47.What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A.Don’t be afraid to travel on your own. B.It’s not easy to get a travel partner.
C.Don’t go travelling without a partner. D.It’s necessary to make a travel plan.

The world has many refugees (难民), but we usually hear little about their lives. This year’s Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah, is helping people know more about their stories.
Gurnah’s works are mainly about the impact of colonialism (殖民主义的影响) and the experiences of refugees, who leave their countries to stay safe or find a better life. “These are things that are with us every day. People are dying, people are being hurt around the world—we must deal with these problems in the most kind way,” said Gurnah.
In fact, this problem is very close to his own heart. When he was just 18, Gurnah was forced to leave his home country as a refugee. He moved to England and soon started writing novels there.
Aged 73, Gurnah has written 10 novels and a number of short stories. In 1994, Gurnah wrote Paradise (《天堂》), one of his best-known novels. It’s about a boy in Africa called Yusuf, who grew up during World War I. Yusuf was sold by his father to a traveling trader to pay a debt (债务). As he traveled, Yusuf saw war, disease and child slavery. The name of the book is ironic (讽刺的), because although the scenery of Africa is beautiful, what happens in the story there is the opposite.
Before Gurnah retired, he was a professor at the University of Kent in England. The head of the university’s School of English said that Gurnah’s works “have touched millions worldwide and shine a light on human experiences that are so often ignored (忽略)”.
52.Gumah’s hope might be ________.
A.to make Africa more beautiful
B.to experience the life of a refugee
C.to help deal with the refugee problem
D.to keep refugees in their own countries

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the creators of Google, want to change your world. Their goal is to make a search engine that always gives you the right information. “It’s a huge goal, Page says, and it’s a long way off.” But Page and Brin are ready for it.
“Imagine if you had a librarian who had the knowledge of Google but could also answer immediately with that knowledge,” says Page. “That would really change the world.”
Both Page and Brin come from math and computer science backgrounds. Page’s father and mother were both computer scientists. So Page’s love for computers started early. He remembers surprising his teachers when he turned in a typed homework paper in primary school.
Brin’s father was a math teacher and Brin’s parents moved to the U.S. from Russia in 1979. Brin says they moved to the U.S. to have more chances. Judging from their son’s success, their move certainly was a great decision!

After collecting money from friends and family, they put Google on the market in 1998. At first, they did 10,000 searches daily. Today they do over 200 million searches—more than 50 percent of all Internet searches.
Both men have surprisingly simple lifestyles. They don’t live in large houses or own expensive cars. Page and Brin also work very hard.
