In the special time of fighting against COVID-19, you may want to learn more about viruses. Besides reading news,
watching films and TV series may help you better understand them. Here are the three choices for you.
Contagion
A deadly virus spreads rapidly and kills people within days of showing symptoms. As the fast-moving pandemic
grows, the worldwide medical community works to find a cure.
US political website The Hill says “It makes it clear that a virus tries to seek out new hosts (宿主) because its carriers
die—as it must to survive, and it must always stay one jump ahead of death.”

With a severe outbreak of the epidemic a South Korean city, the government orders a complete shutdown to separate
the community. Doctor Kim and a rescue worker Kang want to save the infected, including Kim’s daughter. They enter the
closed city and successfully develop a vaccine(疫苗).
“It conveys to its audience the importance of treating people with dignity and courage,” movie critic Kerry wrote in
her essay.

The Hot Zone
Since the Ebola virus first broke out in the 1970s in Africa, it has become famous worldwide and one of the deadliest
diseases in the world. Based on the virus, a drama called The Hot Zone was created. It is set in Washington, DC, in 1989,
when the virus appears in an animal research lab. A US Army scientist, Nancy Jaax, risks her life to prevent a serious
outbreak.
“The Hot Zone shows what it takes to defeat an outbreak,” noted Variety.

If you live near a deep forest, you might have come across some wildlife animals hiding in your backyard, but nothing
beats the surprise this woman got when she found three baby deer hiding in her house to wait out the storm.
The woman then posted several photos of the baby deer taking refuge (避难) in one of her rooms on her Twitter account
“Amscolie”. She wrote that it was a very stormy day and a rainstorm was approaching so she left her back door open just in
case some animals wanted to take refuge in her house. In the meantime, she went out in the storm to check whether there
were any animals that were stuck in the bad weather, especially a number of deer. However, she could not find any of them
so she went back to her home.
Surprisingly, she found that the deer had already made their way inside her house!
Like many other animals, deer can predict stormy weather and know when it is best to find a shelter from the dangerous
weather. As the back door was opened, she did not notice when the deer entered her house. The three intelligent baby deer
made their way inside but there was no sight of their parents. The woman did try to find if there was any deer nearby her
house but to no avail. The woman thought that the baby deer might have lost their parents so she welcomed them with open
arms.
“I raise orphaned (孤儿的) wildlife. Recently, as a storm was coming, I doubted some wildlife couldn’t find shelters, so
I opened the back door. With a shock, I went inside, only to see them next to an end table in the living room. I told them they
could sleep in the house for the night because the weather was going to be terrible. What a day!” the woman wrote on Little

A handful of small animal and human studies prove that consuming dairy products like milk and cheese before bed may
help most people have a more restful night’s sleep, though the reason why remains unclear.
Most experts believe that milk promoting sleep may be related to chemical compounds, the mental effects of this
relaxed bedtime habit, or both.
Most experts agree that milk’s sleep-promoting possibility is likely related to specific chemical compounds, such as
tryptophan(色氨酸)and melatonin(褪黑素)in milk which may help you fall asleep. Because the role of tryptophan and
melatonin in sleep disorders is well established, most experts believe taking supplements of these compounds may reduce
symptoms of anxiety and depression that can crop up at bed time.
However, there’s currently no evidence to suggest that a single glass of milk contains enough tryptophan or melatonin to
significantly influence your body’s natural production of elements which help a person fall asleep fast or to independently
treat a disordered sleeping pattern.
Some professors, such as Clinten in Boston University, draw a theory and suspect that milk’s potential role as a sleep aid
has little to do with its nutritional composition and that it’s instead more closely related to the mental effect of having a
calming bedtime habit.
Another theory is that drinking warm milk could subconsciously remind you of having milk at bedtime during your
early childhood years. These soothing feelings may signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep, making it easier to fall asleep
peacefully.
Still, there is not enough evidence to definitely prove any particular effects of developing a habit of drinking milk
before bedtime, so more research is needed.
28. What can we know about the viewpoint that milk can promote sleep
A. Milk can only help animals fall asleep quickly.
B.The reason why drinking milk can promote sleep has been found.
C. Everyone can fall asleep faster by drinking milk before going to sleep.
D. The tryptophan and melatonin in milk may promote healthy sleep cycles.
29. According to the theory, Clinten thinks drinking milk beforebedtime can .
A. Release nutritional composition.
B. Add more anxiety and depression.
C. Imply oneself that you should go to bed now with ease.
D. Continue to develop the habit of drinking just like in your childhood.

A. Tradesman who supply milk. B. People who suffer from wakefulness.
C. Professors in Boston University. D. Children with a disordered sleeping habits.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the effects of the milk before bedtime
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.

Could an app tell if a first date is just not that into you Engineers at the, University of Cincinnati say the technology
might not be far off. They trained a computer-using data from reparable technology that measures respiration (呼吸), heart
rates and perspiration to identify the type of conversation two people were having based on their physiological (生理学的)
responses alone.
Researchers studied a phenomenon in which people’s heart rates, respiration and other autonomic nervous system
responses become synchronized ( 同步的) when they talk. Known as physiological synchrony, this effect is stronger when
two people engage deeply in a conversation or cooperate closely on a task. “Physiological synchrony appears even when
people are talking over Zoom, an online chat platform,” said study co-author Vesna Novak.
In experiments with human participants, the computer was able to differentiate four different conversations with as
much as 75% accuracy. The study is one of the first of its kind to train artificial intelligence how to recognize aspects of a
conversation based on the participants’ physiology alone.
“The computer could tell if you’re a bore,” lead author Chatterjee said. “A modified version of our system could
measure the level of interest a person is taking in the conversation, how harmonious the two of you are and how engaged the
other person is in the conversation.”
Studies have also shown that physiological synchrony can predict how well two people will work together to
accomplish a task. The degree of synchrony also relates to how much empathy a patient realizes in a therapist or the level of
engagement students feel with their teachers. “You could probably use our system to determine which people in an
organization work better together in a group and which are naturally opposed,” Chatterjee said.
This aspect of affective computing holds huge potential for providing real-time feedback for educators and doctors,
Novak said, “There are a lot of potential applications in this space.”
32. What did the engineers train the computer to do in the study
A.Record conversations. B.Smooth conversations.
C.Judge conversations. D.Provide conversation tips.
33.What’s paragraph 2 mainly about
A.How we develop talking skills. B.How physiological synchrony works.
C.Why chatting online gets popular. D.Why physiological synchrony matters.
34.How does physiological synchrony benefit teachers
A. By offering them some teaching skills.
B. By helping them correcting homework.
C. By creating a relaxing studying atmosphere.
D. By providing them with students’ participation level.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Stay or pass This computer can tell. B.Good or bad That is a big problem.
C.What can the computer do for patients D.How can we improve our people chat skills

As is known, Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists of all time. He was also a really great person.
Einstein learned from making mistakes
36 He said he needed a desk, some paper and pencil. He also needed a basket to hold his mistakes. This
shows that he knew even the cleverest man in the world can only learn by making mistakes.

Many children wrote letters to ask him for help with their homework. One day, he wrote a letter to a young girl to tell
her not to worry about her Maths homework because he thought Maths was difficult too.
Einstein considered time to be important
He never wore socks because he thought putting on socks was a waste of time as people already wore shoes. He also
thought remembering things found in books was not worth it. 38 He knew what was worth remembering. It is true
that if we are going to do great things in our lives, we cannot waste time.
Einstein liked to joke too
In one exam, a student asked him why all the questions were the same as last year’s. Einstein replied the questions were
the same, but the answers were different. 39
When Einstein was a child, his teachers used to say he was not clever. However, Einstein kept working hard and
surprised the world with his achievements. 40 So, never be discouraged!
A. Einstein was also very modest.
B. What a humorous person he is!
C. Einstein was also strict with his students.

第二节 读后续写(25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was just another busy day until I met the boy on the bus. He was not a passenger like me. He was, what we call a
street child, an 8-10-year-old kid with a worn T-shirt. These poorly dressed kids were seen almost everywhere in Dhaka city.
But what was special about that boy was his face. There was “something” in him that caught my attention. That was an
angelic(天使般的)baby face with little care.
He got straight into the bus as it stopped at a traffic light. The bus helper shouted at him in the first place. But instead of
talking back, the boy kept silent and started handing out a piece of paper to all the passengers. What was written in the paper
was, in short, that his father died a couple of years ago. His mother worked at houses. He badly needed money to help his
family, so he wished someone warm-hearted to buy chocolates from him.
This was nothing new to people who took a bus every day and I was no different. I had my earphones on, listening to
some relaxing music to kill time. When he came to me to get the paper back, I casually gave him some money. Thankfully it
brought some smiles on his face. He was about to give me ten chocolates in return for the money I gave to him when I
stopped him.
“I don’t like chocolates, brother. So there is no need of chocolates. You can have the money,” I said.
All of a sudden, the smile on his face disappeared.
“I’m not a beggar. Please take the chocolate, or take your money back.”
His straight answer greatly surprised me. I even felt he was slightly angry. I had given money to many kids before,
without taking their chocolates. But this time something seemed different. I realized his angelic baby face was not the only
thing special about him.
1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
The boy put ten chocolates on my seat and got off the bus.
Having got the boy’s name, I decided to helphim.
