Santorini
Santorini offers a unique landscape of beaches in colors of black, red, and white, a product of their volcanic sand. Imagine swimming in the warm mythic Aegean Sea, with volcanoes and sunsets as a backdrop. Churches are built into caves and are astonishingly beautiful.

With so much to do, it’s no surprise that visitors return to Prince Edward Island again and again.

Hit the shops in George Town, the capital, where all the best designer brands can be found. You’ll have various choices although the crescent-shaped (新月形的) Seven Mile Beach is the most obvious destination. Head out on the water where coral reefs await. Great food, great weather and great tourist attractions for all, what’s not to like about gorgeous Grand Cayman

Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his school team, I was feeling sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity on the court, falling behind for three quarters of the game. As for me, I had just lost my job.
As I watched what my son was experiencing, I recalled the events earlier in the day—packing up everything in a box and saying goodbye to my colleagues. During the drive home, I kept telling myself that I would find work again—I was confident in my experience and abilities, but self-doubt was still sticking its foot in the door.
The game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing (落后的). I saw the determination on his back to not only tie the game, but then go ahead by three points. Then, a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie the game up again. With a tie game and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball, and with skill and confidence, he made the basket with a defender hanging all over him. The other player was called for a foul (犯规).
As Nathan stood preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points, I saw the focus and determination on his face, with no room for self-doubt. After he made the free throw, his team managed to stop the other team from scoring, winning the game and moving on to the finals (决赛).
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me. I had taught him perseverance (毅力) in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That short moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment, we both won.
( )24.What does the underlined word “adversity” in the first paragraph probably mean
A.loss B.confusion C.success D.difficulty
( )25.What can we know from the text
A.I lost my job because of little experience and poor ability.
B.I was proud of Nathan because he won the game in the finals.
C.Nathan’s team won a narrow victory in the basketball game.
D.Nathan had never doubted himself whenever he was in trouble.
( )26.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the last paragraph
A.I was sure my son would win. B.I often taught my son lessons on basketball.
C.I was greatly proud of my son. D.I was always confident about myself.
( )27.What is the text mainly about
A.An Unforgettable Experience B.A Lesson from My Son
C.A Moment of Self-doubt D.An Exciting Basketball Game

“All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,”said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.”Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spent about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry, or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were shocking: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoelaces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
( )28.What is a problem of using digital media in education according to Professor Greenfield
A.Having bad relationships with family members.
B.Failing to focus on their schoolwork.
C.Being addicted to online games.
D.Being unable to understand others’ emotions.
( )29.How do scientists like the results of Greenfield’s experiment
A.They are alarming. B.They are far from perfect.
C.They still need to be improved. D.They are quite reasonable.
( )30.What can be inferred from the text
A.Students learned how to express emotions in the experiment.
B.Students attending the camp did much better in their studies.
C.Too much play with digital devices caused some concerns.
D.More than half of the children in the UK couldn’t tie their shoelaces.
( )31.What is the author’s advice for readers at the end of the text
A.To use your smart phones and computers less.
B.To learn to tie your shoelaces confidently.
C.To learn to be an understanding friend.
D.To make more friends through your smart phones.

If you think running is just great for the body, then think again. Scientists have found that the sport not only keeps people fit but also improves your brain power.
The researchers found that people who keep fit were more likely to have larger brains, better memories, and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive (认知的) skills. The findings add to a growing pile of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing and helping it replace dying cells. This might reduce the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症).
One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59-69 on a running machine. Their heart and lung capacity were measured, and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains. Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60-77. As they went through a three-month fitness program, they saw improvements in their memory.
Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results. Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.
Linda Clare, a professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia (痴呆) at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: “Moderate intensity aerobic (有氧的) exercise such as walking, cycling or running can produce beneficial changes in brain structure and function.”
( )32.Which of the following about the research findings is TRUE
A.Healthy people probably have larger brains and better memories.
B.Unfit people tend to have smaller brains and better cognitive skills.
C.There’s much evidence shows that exercise contributes to brain aging.
D.Exercise can keep people from all the illnesses and diseases.
( )33.What do we know about Professor Linda Clare
A.She once did research on the hippocampus of mice.
B.She first found exercise improves brain power.
C.She treats illnesses of ageing and dementia.
D.She thinks aerobic exercise does good to the brain.
( )34.Where does this text probably come from
A.A TV Interview. B.A Health Paper. C.A Research Magazine. D.A Running Poster.
( )35.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To discuss some good ways to keep healthy. B.To tell people sport improves our brain power.
C.To stress the importance of doing sports. D.To introduce ways of improving our memories.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighborhood, I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
“Can I help you ” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables ” His blue eyes were hopeful.
“Are they from your garden ” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too ”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I’ll get my money.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for some tea ” Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie.”
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor with her never-ending questions. “What is your name Where do you live Why are your clothes so dirty ”
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Mary,
I am glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are having difficulties in keeping fit, I feel a bit worried. Here are my suggestions.
One of the best ways to stay healthy is through wise food choices. We all know that snacks and junk food can be attractive and tasty, but they are often high in sugar and salt. Instead, it is highly recommended to maintain a balanced diet that includes sufficient protein and vitamins. In addition to a balanced diet, regular exercise is essential too. Jogging, cycling, swimming, or ball games are all excellent forms of exercise. Choose one that you enjoy most.
I hope these suggestions can help you with your concerns and become fit again.
Yours,
Li Hua

【参考范文】
When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day. My daughter excitedly waited for his next visit and made full preparations. As the old man visited us the next day, he was amazed by all the preparations for him, including apple pies. His eyes were filled with tears. We became friends, and my daughter and I enjoyed the company the old visitor offered us. But before long, he had to move to live with his daughter and we hadn’t seen him ever since.
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home—a letter from the old man’s daughter. She informed us that our dear old friend had passed away and sent us another letter written by the old man, which said, “Thank you for all your kindnesses to an old man. When I was lonely, you took me in. When I was badly in need of a family, you accepted me. My last few years are filled with happiness because of you.”

空格前句子“Just be concentrated and motivated when working on those foreign language skills,”是祈使句,意为“集中精力学习外语技能”,空格处应该表明这样做的结果,B项“这样你最终会成功的”符合语境。注意祈使句“and sb. will do sth.”结构。因此选B项。
37.C 本段小标题为“从头开始学习”。空格上文“Almost every language learning journey starts with the alphabet, which can be difficult for some people.(几乎所有的语言学习之旅都是从字母开始的,这对一些人来说可能很难。)”,此处应填“That is the very first obstacle.(这就是第一个障碍)”与空格下文“When you pass it, there comes another one, like everyday phrases.(当你通过它的时候,就会有另一个障碍,比如日常短语)”构成顺承关系。因此选C项。
38.A 此处为本段小标题。根据下文 “In some ways, grammar is not important in learning a foreign language. After all, you can speak a language without knowing grammar.”可知该段讲的是关于学习外语的语法方面的问题,故选A项。
39.E与38空一样,本段与语法内容相关,空格后是一个祈使句“39, feel free to ask for help many times until you understand them completely.”,因此,此处应为从句,故选E。全句意为“如果你不理解一些语法规则,可以多次寻求帮助直到你完全理解为止。”故选E项。
40.F 上文“Some believe that the language is hard and that, even if working very hard, they might not succeed. As a result, their brain will not work enough.(有些人认为语言很难,即使很努力,他们也可能不会成功。结果,他们的大脑将无法充分工作)”说明消极的态度带来的负面结果。此处填“Then unavoidably, the performances are poor.(那么不可避免地,表现就很差。)”同样说明消极态度带来的不好的结果。上下文语意连贯。故选F项。

Text 10
W: A person has two ears but only one mouth. That means we should listen, not just speak. The word “listen” has the same letters as the word “silent”. Listening silently is a good quality that we should have. Then why is it important to be a good listener
Listening is really helpful. When someone is sad or angry, he wants to express his poor feelings. At this moment, we need to listen silently first until he gets calm. Then we may have a good talk with him. Maybe it is a good way to help him out. Listening is a kind of love. For example, we may think our parents are always talking too much. But in fact, they do so because they are anxious about our health, study and so on… If we listen patiently, our parents will feel we care about them. Silent love is often more powerful than words.
Listening is polite behavior, Sometimes, we just want others to listen to us but forget to listen to others. In fact, that’s not polite. In order to show our respect for others, we had better listen to them first. Then we can express our ideas.
Listening sounds easy, but it’s not, So we should learn to listen with our ears, eyes and hearts as much as we can.
