Dear Bob,
I’m glad you will come to China to spend your summer vacation.
Actually, many cities in China take much pride in both its cultural richness
and modern prosperity. Here I honorably recommend a worthwhile journey
to Shanghai to you. My reasons are as follows.
Shanghai, which is one of the most visited tourist destinations in China,
is home to many historical sites and man-made attractions where people of
all ages will have access to their favorite rides and amusements. Its historical
landmarks as well as lines of skyscrapers attract millions of tourists from
both home and abroad who come see its higher skyline, experience its
convenient public transportation. Another reason why people include
Shanghai in their annual travel plan is that its pubs, bars, and restaurants are
blessed with all kinds of fine international cuisines that make Shanghai a
paradise for diners. So you must keep your eyes open if you are going to
make your trip to Shanghai enjoyable and worthwhile.
As Shanghai is such an amazing city, I sincerely hope you can take it
into consideration and have a rewarding time here. I’m looking forward to
your coming.
Yours
Li Ming

Paragraph 1:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard (胡子) and a red

cap, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached
out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gift for you”.
Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The
moment he blended into the darkness, l untied the ribbon with heart
thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an
attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Paragraph 2:
Through tear-blurred (泪眼婆娑的) eyes, l recognized the handwriting
on the card. It was a friend of mine and 1 later discovered that the man was
her father. She was one of the audiences of my sad story. The card read:
“Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly
and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn’t be a
bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now l
believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives
inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan
deliberate acts of kindness.

1.
M: Would you like some hot chocolate It’s good to warm you up.
W: No, thanks. I have to watch my weight.
M: What a shame. Hot chocolate in the shop is very famous.
W: I have a second thought. Maybe it won’t kill me if I just have a taste.
2
W: How was your midterm exam
M: I couldn’t feel better about it.
W: You must have got very high scores.
M: Just as you said.
3
W: Here’s your room key. It’s 417. I hope you have a nice stay in Centeryille.
M: Thanks. I’m in town for a conference. This is my first visit here.
W: In that case, I’d highly recommend visiting the Centeryille Art Museum.
It’s famous for its collection of twentieth-century paintings.
4
M: It’s coming down pretty hard out there.
W: Yes, we get storms like this every year. You’d better not go out in such
weather.
5
W: Tina’s been quiet all day. I think she may be coming down with
something.

M: I’ll take her temperature and see if she has a fever.
W: She didn’t feel hot, but she’s been crying a lot and she keeps sneezing.
M: I’d better go see her.
6
M: Sorry, I wonder if you would mind moving your car You’re blocking the
emergency exit for the theatre.
W: I’m sorry, I must have missed the sign. Could you suggest a place to
park
M: The sign is here, just behind the tree. If you go around the corner there’s
lots of parking by the side of the building.
W: Thanks, I’ll move my car right away but you really should cut back those
branches.

W: Hey, Bob! Did you hear that John Morrison left the company And that’s
why the marketing department has been really shorthanded and they asked
me to post a job ad.
M: Yes, Janet in Accounting told me he got a job offer from the P&T Group
in Canada. By the way, did many people respond to the ad
W: A lot more than I expected. But the problem is that I should finish
reviewing résumés and narrow down the list of applicants by the end of the
week.
M: You’ll be very busy, then. If you need any assistance, please let me know.
8
W: Hello, I just wanted to call, because I made a reservation for tonight last
week, but I didn’t make a note of it, and now I’ve forgotten the time!
M: That’s not a problem, madam. We’re a small place, so there aren’t too
many reservations in our book for this evening. Can you give me some
details about the party
W: Sure, so it was for ... 6 to 8 people, not sure what I said specifically, and I
remember I mentioned a dietary requirement. One of the party can’t have
milk, cheese, that sort of thing ... I also put in an order for chocolate cakes
for everyone ahead of time, because they’re delicious but they take quite a
while to make, so I thought that might speed things up a bit.
M: Perfect. I’ve found your reservation, madam. Now, do you have a pen
handy this time You made an order for ...

W: Hey Jason. What are you doing this Friday
M: I’m going to go to the golf course because I’m playing golf on Saturday.
W: You’re golfing without me What’s up with that
{#{QQABaQAAogAAABBAABgCUwWQCkKQkBAAACoOhBAAsAAAQBFABCA=}#}
M: Sorry, but we already have a group of four people. I’m going with a
couple of guys from work.
W: Where are you playing
M: Washington National. Have you been there before
W: I’ve been there a couple of times. It’s a great course. You know the
Huskies play there, right
M: I didn’t know that. Is it a hard course
W: It’s pretty challenging.
M: Do you want to come along
W: I can’t this Friday. I’m playing basketball with some friends that night.
M: At night
W: Yeah. We’re playing indoors at a school gym.
M: What’s the occasion
W: Just a small league I play on. Nothing special.
M: I never got into basketball. It’s fun and all, but maybe I’m just not good at
it.
W: It’s still great exercise. I get a better workout from basketball than I do
from the gym.
M: That’s true.

M: There’s lots of advice on CVs and a lot of it differs so it’s hard to say
exactly what a perfect CV is. I’d say a good CV should cover no more than
two sides of A4 paper and be divided into clear headings. The first section
should include personal details: name, address, telephone number, email and
things. Some employers like to see a photo, too. You can always phone the
company and find out. Next comes education and qualifications starting with
the most recent things. The third section deals with work experience — again
starting with the most recent job. I think it’s important here to be brief. You
don’t need to use complete sentences as long as it’s very clear what you’ve
done. Following this is the section on professional skills. Show the employer
your abilities, including your ability to use IT and foreign languages. Finally,
detail your interests. An employer likes to know what kind of person you are
and things like team sports, for example, show this. Perhaps the most
important thing is to show how you meet the requirements in the job
advertisement.
