It was 10 p.m. on a Wednesday night. 14-year-old Li Gong sat at his desk worried. He had to write a 600-word book report and it was due the next day. But he hadn't read the book yet! Li opened an Al app and typed in (输入) “Book report, 600 words, The Old Man and the Sea.” In less than a minute, the boy had his book report.
Several days later, Li was called into his teacher's office. Unluckily, his teacher was knowledgeable about computers and AI apps. And by using one of the apps, he discovered that Li had cheated in his writing. Instead of punishing the boy, he explained that while AI apps were helpful for some tasks, there was no shortcut (捷径) to learning. Learning how to write well is important to understanding a subject and expressing your own ideas about it. After hearing this, Li finally knew how to use AI apps in a more proper way.
An AI app depends on a collection of information that someone has uploaded (上传) onto a computer system. A specially trained algorithm (算法) deals with the information to produce the type of writing someone might need. It may be useful for writing news reports, but it's not useful for expressing you personal thoughts and ideas.
Writing is the most difficult of all the language skills. You need to be good at grammar and have a good vocabulary. Writing also requires you to think clearly. If you read the book and write the book report by yourself, you will learn a lot and have the satisfaction of expressing your own ideas about the story. That's something AI cannot do.
( ) 24. What did Li Gong do to get his book report done quickly
A. He copied it from another student. B. He used an AI app to make the report.
C. He asked the teacher for help.
( ) 25. According to the writer, which of the following is NOT required for a good writing
A. Clear thoughts. B. Good grammar and vocabulary.
C. A collection of information on the computer.
( ) 26. What might Li do after the talk with his teacher
A. He might decide to read books and write his own reports.
B. He might use AI apps for all future tasks.
C. He might not write a report anymore.
( ) 27. What is the best title for this article
A. AI, a Shortcut to Learn Well B. The Downsides of AI Writing Apps
C. How AI Apps Help Students Cheat on Book Reports

Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life While many Chinese people speak Mandarin (普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project (中国语言资源保护工程) a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There's an online library and people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos there.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to storing (留存) local cultures. “Language can tell us a lot about a place's history, what people believe, and the biases of an area,” he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming expressed his worries about the disappearance of dialects. “For over 10 years, in areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the Wu dialect, and young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library “Many people across the country are working hard on this project to make it come true,” said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
The project is now moving into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
( ) 28. Where can people learn dialects from those audio clips and videos
A. In the local library. B. In the online library. C. In the school.
( ) 29. Why is it important to protect the dialect culture according to Harold Palmer
A. Because dialects make a big difference to passing down local cultures.
B. Because many people speak dialects.
C. Because some young people hardly speak dialects.
( ) 30. What does the underlined word “digital” probably mean in Chinese in the last Paragraph
A. 手指头的 B. 摄像的 C. 数字化的

When you’re having a hard time with something, it’s natural to ask others for help. 32 sometimes ways of thinking can make it hard to ask for help. Here are some kinds of attitudes (态度) that can stand in the way and some ideas on how to get past them.
Some people believe that needing help is a sign of weakness. 33 You know what you need and you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out for it. Once a boy told me he wanted to ask his coach how to improve his basketball skills, but he was afraid that his coach thought he was practicing hard.
34 Everyone needs help now and then. Accepting help can strengthen friendships and relationships. Everyone feels good when they can support a friend. When you ask for help, choose someone who listens and cares, not someone who judges or criticizes (批评) you. If you get refused, it’s not because of you, but the other person.
Another wrong attitude is waiting for someone else to make the first move. It’s not always easy for other people to see when you need help. Maybe you’re putting on a cheerful face to hide the problem. 35 You have to ask actively.
Because it can be hard to reach out for help, don’t hesitate (犹豫) to offer support to another person if you think he or she needs it. Giving and receiving help are great life skills to learn. 36 .
A. They help us improve our a abilities to understand other people. B. Actually, it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. C. Getting help sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to do. D. Don’t wait for someone to read your mind. E. Some other people think they don’t deserve (应该得到) help or support.
