Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.
“Social media is foreign to many older professionals—but very important for connecting with today’s customers,” Ms Van Tubbergh said. “We have this workforce sitting in schools doing this already but they’re doing it for fun.” Ms Van Tubbergh’s company, which helps launch products to market, took then Year 10 students Braith Mansfield and Tahmana Rudolph on for two weeks’ work experience.
Ms Van Tubbergh said with a bit of guidance and help with spelling and presenting in a professional environment, the boys now do about 80% of Elm’s social media marketing work for online customers. The pair work one day a week with Elm at Gosford and the rest at Kariong High School. Their duties include stand-alone posts on social media platforms, videos, stories and website headers. They recently finished a hard copy flyer(传单)for a major retailer that will be seen by every consumer who visits the website.
“I am so impressed by the performance of the two teenagers, who have helped grow the company’s social media following by 600%,” said Ms Van Tubbergh. “Braith, 17, and Tahmana, 16—now in Year 11—came into the business with a lot of unexplored social media experience. Working at Elm has provided them with a ‘digital platform of work that is worth its weight in gold’—a valuable resource they can show other employers when starting a full-time career.”
Braith and Rudolph are among 42 NSW Central Coast students doing Year 11 and 12 as part of a School-Based Apprenticeship and Training(SBAT)program. Have you noticed that as time goes on and technology advances, things seem to keep getting smaller and smaller That’s especially true with that machine we call the “computer.”
What exactly is a computer Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines a computer as “a usually programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve(检索), and process data.” Others think a computer as anything that transforms information in a meaningful way.
For thousands of years, people have tried to improve their lives by inventing machines to make certain tasks easier. Some people believe a simple mechanical device called an “abacus” was one of the earliest forms of a computer. Ancient people used the device to perform simple calculations(计算). Archaeologists(考古学家)have found evidence that the ancient Greeks used the abacus as early as the 5th century B.C.
Modern computers were developed much more recently. The first modern electronic computer—known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer or ENIAC—became operational in 1946. Weighing more than 30 tons, ENIAC took up as much space as 1,800 square feet. Since then, computers have become much smaller and much more powerful. While ENIAC could perform 5,000 addition problems per second, many of today’s laptop computers weigh just a few pounds and can perform several billion operations per second.
Today’s computers keep getting smaller and smaller. Large desktop computers gave way to laptops. Laptops have developed into a wide variety of even smaller computing devices, such as netbooks and tablet computers. Many people even carry computers with them everywhere they go. Smartphones, or cellphones, fit easily into a pocket and allow their users to make telephone calls, surf the Internet and conduct business.
So what’s the smallest computer available today As of 2015, the smallest computer is just one cubic millimeter. However, today’s computer manufacturers are constantly producing newer and smaller models at a rate too fast to keep up with. Whatever is the smallest today will probably be replaced with something even smaller tomorrow!
28.How does the author organize the text
A.In the order of time.
B.In the order of space.
C.By raising questions and answering them.
D.By analyzing reasons and then drawing a conclusion.
29.What can we know about “abacus” from Paragraph 3
A.It was invented by Ancient Greeks. B.It was widely used in Ancient Greece.
C.It could carry out various tough tasks. D.It was among the earliest forms of computer.
30.Why does the author take ENIAC as an example
A.To compare it with ancient computers.
B.To tell readers how large earlier computers were.
C.To show readers how powerful the first computer was.
D.To explain to readers how modern computers operated.
31.Which might be the best title for the text
A.What exactly is a computer B.What is the smallest computer
C.What would future computers be like D.How did the computer come into being

第二节(满分25分)

Looking up at the black sky with shining stars, I smiled. The next morning, my Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club teammates and I would begin the first leg(赛程)of the George Bass Surfboat Marathon—the longest and toughest surfboat race in the world.
Over seven days and seven legs, we’d row 190km down the NSW coast, starting at Corrigan’s Beach in Batemans Bay and ending in Cocora Beach, Eden.
It was a competition my 10 teammates and I had been training two years for. At dawn each morning, including Christmas Day, we’d been straight into the boat and out on the water. For the last six months we’d added in gym sessions, too.
Surf clubs from all over Australia had come to compete. When our turn came to set off, we readied our boat. “We can do this, ladies,” I cheered.
On the water, we gave it everything we had. My aching muscles screamed at me to stop, but I pushed through. After two-and-a-half hours, we crossed the line first and won that leg. Over the next three days, we won another two and lost one. With three of four wins in the bag, on the fifth day we were hopeful. We only needed one more win to secure the marathon.
Our surfboat marathon win was so close—then disaster struck! When we made our way back to the shoreline, the water became aggressively rough. It was nothing we hadn’t rowed through before, so we kept going. But the boat started to shake and suddenly, it turned side-on and one by one we leapt off the boat, me included. Seconds later, the 300kg surfboat suddenly slammed on top of me. My body immediately went numb(麻木).
Emergency doctors raced over. It was decided, due to the severity of my injuries, I should be airlifted to hospital. I was taken to Canberra where I underwent tests, including CT scans, whose results showed I had a spinal(颈椎)injury. I received an operation. When I woke up, the surgeon visited. “We’ve inserted metal plates to put your back together,” he said. “We’ll remove them in about six months.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing. _________________________________________

第二节
One possible version:
The support I received while I was in hospital was amazing. With the medical staff’s help, I pushed myself one step at a time, determined to get better. It was hard, but I knew it’d be worth it. My surfboat teammates were equally amazing. They barely left my side and took turns nursing me, encouraging me and comforting me. A Go Fund Me page raised over $50,000 to help cover my medical costs, which was truly unbelievable. I was convinced a few broken bones would never keep me from pursuing my dream.
Now, after spending two months in hospital, I’m back at home. Although there’s still a long way to go before full recovery and getting back on the water again, I am resolved not to give up but to continue. My life may be as unpredictable as the ocean, but my love for surfboat will never fade away. Four months later, the big day for the metal plate to be removed from my body ultimately comes, accompanied by the thrilling news that we can kick off preparations for next George Bass Surfboat Marathon.

be based on是习惯搭配,意思是“根据……;以……
