When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone“has an accent”is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect, too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not ” (meaning “Have you eaten ”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects—for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
( )24.What does the author think of his/her friends’ response in Paragraph 1
A.It reflects their self confidence. B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the real meaning of accents. D.It shows that they are good learners.
( )25.Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A.To show different languages in Singapore. B.To correct a grammatical mistake.
C.To show a traditional approach. D.To justify the use of dialects.
( )26.What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects. B.Travel all over the world.
C.Look for accents in China. D.Distinguish our local languages from others’.
( )27.What is the author’s attitude towards accent
A.Negative. B.Favourable. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

Desertification (沙漠化) is a course that has caused much concern over the past few years and it’s a major problem for the ancient land of Egypt, where 96% of the country’s land is desert.
So why is it that—if you drove a car 10 miles west of the Suez Canal—you would see a large number of forests outlined against the orange sand and blue sky of the Sahara
The Serapium Forest is the richest of Egypt’s 36 areas that make up a program to fight desertification by creating sustainably managed commercial forests fed completely by wastewater. The 500-mile forest is only a short distance from the 400, 000 people living in the Egyptian city of Ismailia, who produce millions of tons of wastewater every year.
After a dozen-mile journey to the Serapium Forest, the wastewater is then stored underground where oxygen is fed in to speed up the bacterial purification process. A system of pipes then spreads the wastewater throughout the forest. And human wastewater is still rich in chemicals even after being treated.
The government’s effort, called the National Program for Safe Use of Treated Sewage Water for Afforestation is going a long way toward achieving the country’s goals voice d in the 1992 UN Rio conference on climate change.
The research was supported by Forest Finance, a German company that has already planted near-natural forests in Panama and Vietnam to help those countries with their development and wildlife protection. Forest Finance wants to increase the number of species grown in Serapium by including a forest on the site. That way, the biodiversity of the commercial forest would be able to support a greater number of species, and hopefully bring in money as well. Although the Serapium Forest faces a lot of difficulties, it’s still growing—a 500-acre green wall to join the others in the world in preventing the sands of the world’s deserts from spreading.
( )28.What can be learned about the Serapium Forest
A.It was built by the people of Ismailia. B.It is in danger of being destroyed.
C.It was planted to fight climate change. D.It is the smallest forest in Egypt.
( )29.What does the author try to talk about in the fourth paragraph
A.The way of using wastewater to feed the Serapium Forest.
B.The influence of green space on cities.
C.The value of the newly-founded Serapium Forest.
D.The preparation for the government setting up the program.
( )30.What does the author say about Forest Finance’s Serapium plan
A.It raises serious doubts. B.It has been going smoothly.
C.It encourages the government to take action. D.It will bring great benefits.
( )31.Where can you read the passage
A.In a diary. B.In a nature magazine. C.In a novel. D.In a math book.

When you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side Now scientists have figured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.
Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and produces electrical current to charge a battery.
Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of O2 and CO2. When the volunteers were walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device did not significantly affect their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity. If you up the load to 45 pounds, it could fully charge a smartphone only after 12 hours. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
The device produces electricity from human movement and has been identified as a workable solution to providing a renewable energy source for portable electronic devices. It is particularly useful to those who work in remote areas, as these people often carry a lot of weight in a backpack for their exploration.
But here’s a real conundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load so that they can ensure the pack charges your phone up without weighing you down.
( )32.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.What the device looks like. B.How the device works.
C.Who the device is designed for. D.Why scientists designed the device.
( )33.What can we know about the device from Paragraph 3
A.It was useless for a long walk.
B.It failed to produce steady electricity.
C.Royal Society Open Science conducted the study of the device.
D.It harvested energy as the volunteers walked.
( )34.What does the underlined word “conundrum” in the last paragraph mean
A.Problem. B.Bond. C.Decision. D.Method.
( )35.What is the best title for the text
A.Finding Smarter Alternatives to Batteries B.The Development of Backpacks
C.Charging Batteries When Carrying Backpacks D.Searching for New Ways to Charge Your Phone

It’s normal for friends to experience conflict, disagreements, and even fight. You can’t always agree on everything. Most times conflict with a friend is easily solved. While this is true, every healthy relationship usually involves compromise and adjusting to others’ needs or wants. 39.______. Just “give a little” to allow your friend to “get a little”.
Be careful of unhealthy friendships.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
参考范文:
Dear Johnson,
My classmates and I took part in a wildness survival program from Thursday to Saturday last week. I can’t wait to share some relevant details with you.
Before we started, we were equipped with a compass, a map, a first aid kit, tents, flashlights, some food, some clothes and so on. In the wild, we climbed three hills and swam across two rivers. But then we lost our way in the forest. Luckily, we found the right direction with the help of the compass. As soon as we arrived at the campsite, we put up out tents, made a fire and then started cooking. We also learned how to give first aid.
Through the program, we learned to use knowledge that we gained in class to solve problems. It was quite an unforgettable experience for me.
