A huge, 12--pointed star has been fixed on top of one of the towers of Antoni Gaudí’s famous Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. This means the construction work, begun 139 years ago, nears completion. It is scheduled to be completely finished in 2026-marking 100 years since the architect’s death.
When Gaudídied in 1926,less than a quarter of the exterior was complete. Since then construction has been stopped every now and then for various reasons from Spanish civil wars to funding problems. Though in 2005 the church was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the construction work was claimed to be illegal in 2016,and regained its building permit in 2019.
Born in 1852,Gaudí grew up fascinated by geometry and the natural wonders of the countryside. After studying architecture in school,he eventually formed his own style. In his opinion, form and function were inseparable:Beauty should be part of structure, which rules the natural world. “Nothing is art,” he concluded, “if it does not come from nature.” On his gradua- tion ceremony, his director said the words that became famous later: “I do not know if we have awarded this degree to a madman or to a genius; only time will tell.”
Time has obviously given the answer. In fact,Gaudí’s work over the years has permanently influenced Barcelona architecture like none other before or after. The city is considered the best outdoor modernist Museum of Europe mostly because of Gaudí.
On the 10th of June 1926,Gaudí was knocked down by a tram(有轨电车) while he was doing his usual evening walk. He lost consciousness, and nobody recognized that this disheveled(蓬乱的)old man was the famous architect until he was taken to the hospital. He was buried two days later in the unfinished Sagrada Familia, following a funeral attended by thousands of people:most of the citizens of Barcelona came out to bid a final-farewell to the most universal architect that the city had ever known.
44. What is the first paragraph mainly about? ______
A. A 12-pointed star was set on a Gaudí's church.
B. Barcelona is well known for Gaudí's architecture.
C. Gaudí's famous church will be finished at last.

45. Why did the construction of the church last over a century? ______
A. It was to memorize Gaudí.
B. It suffered frequent delays.
C. It was a World Heritage Site.
D. It didn't get its building permit.
46. What did Gaudí’s director really want to say on his graduation ceremony? ______

B. He was not qualified for the degree.
C. His attitude to others was crazy.
D. He was too talented to be taught.

Anyone who’s met a cat knows that cats are extremely difficult to keep track of. Once one of my cats disappeared somewhere in the house, hiding while I fruitlessly tore the place apart with the fear that it might have got outside. After some period of time,he just ... reappeared. We’ll never beat a cat in a hide-and-seek game, because cats have such sensitive ears that enable them to track their owners’ whereabouts(所在之处).
That has been proved by a new study led by Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University. They did an experiment at a cat cafe with home setting to observe how cats reacted to their owners’ voices -- without visual(视觉的) signals -- when hearing their owners saying their names from speakers. The researchers placed the speakers apart from each other, out of the cats’ sight,to see how the cats would respond to the sounds, especially if the owner’s voice appeared to “transport” from one location to another. The cats’ behaviors, especially their ear and head move- ments, would be carefully observed.
The researchers found that the cats were very surprised when their owners seemed to move from one corner of the cafe to another. The results showed that cats have clear understanding of the relationship between space and sound, meaning they can mentally picture where others are through sound signals: “It is generally believed that cats are not as interested in their owners as dogs are,but it turns out that they just react differently. When hearing their owners’ voice, they are mentally picturing the invisible presence of their owners. This is an ability that is the basis of creativity and imagination,” Takagi said. “Cats have an unbelievable mind.”
“Cats seem to spend most of their time sleeping, but they may be thinking about many things, not just sleeping,” Takagi added. Our furry friends hear more and think more -- than we give them credit for. But whether they choose to listen to you or not is a different story.
48. Why did the writer fail to find his hidden cat? ______
A. It was not in the house actually.
B. He didn't search carefully enough.
C. The cat has extraordinary hearing.
D. The house is too big for the cat.
49. What did the research led by Saho Takagi prove? ______
A. Cats can recognize their owners’ voices.
B. Cats can know where others are through sound.
C. Cats have better hearing than other animals.
D. Cats are good at creativity and imagination.
50. What may a cat usually react when it hears its owner in daily life? ______
A. It hides away immediately. B. It becomes very sleepy.
C. It rushes to its owner. D. It looks uninterested.
51. What does the underlined phrase probably mean? ______
A. Recognize their abilities. B. Teach them skills.
C. Dislike their attitudes. D. Offer them rewards.
D
The second little pig was unlucky. He built his house from sticks. It was blown away by a huffing, puffing wolf, which quickly ate him up. His brother, by contrast, built a wolf-proof house from bricks. The fairy tale could have been written by someone hired by the building industry, which strongly favors brick, concrete and steel. However, in the real world it would help reduce pollution and slow global warming if more builders copied the wood-loving second pig.
In 2015 world leaders meeting in Paris agreed to move towards zero net greenhouse-gas emissions in the second half of this century. That is a tall order, and the building industry makes it even taller. Cement- making(水泥制造) alone produces 6% of the world’s carbon emissions. Steel, half of which goes into buildings, accounts for another 8%. If you factor in (计算在内) all of the energy that goes into lighting, heating and cooling homes and offices, the world’s buildings start to look like a giant environmental problem.
However, buildings can become greener. They can use more recycled steel and can be made in sections that can be put together later in off-site factories, greatly reducing lorry journeys. But no other building material has environmental credentials (证书) as exciting and overlooked as wood.
The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one of comparable strength. As trees take carbon out of the atmosphere when growing, wooden buildings contribute to negative emissions by storing the stuff. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it, capturing more carbon. After buildings are torn down, old beams (梁) and panels(板) are easy to recycle into new structures. And for improving older buildings to be more energy efficient, wood is a good insulator (隔热材料). A softwood window frame provides nearly 400 times as much insulation as a plain steel one of the same thickness and over a thousand times as much as an aluminum(铝) equivalent (同等的).
Wood alone will not bring the environmental cost of the world’s buildings into line. But using wood can do much more than is appreciated. The second little pig was not wrong, just before his time.
52. Why is the second little pig with his brother mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic B. To share a story
C. To support the main idea D. To attract readers
53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. The world’s buildings are the biggest environmental problem.
B. The goal set by world leaders in Paris in 2015 is difficult to achieve.
C. The wooden house is not only exciting but also overlooked for a long time.
D. The building industry produces 14% of the world's carbon emissions totally.
54. How can buildings become eco-friendly
A. Restoring them.
B. Planting more trees in them.
C. Recycling old wooden structure.
D. Substituting steel windows for wood ones.
55. What is the best title for the text
A. The benefit from wood B. The building industry
C. The lesson from fairy tales D. The house made of wood
