Learning to Study Smar ter
Knowing you could be wrong can lead you to learn more accurate (精确的)
knowledge. But does it also help you beyond that To find out more, Porter at Ball
State asked 103 high-school students to answer some questions, and started studying
“mastery behaviors (控制行为) ” — skills that students can use to master their
material.
英语试卷第 5 页 (共8页)
{#{QQABJYQAggAgAAJAAAgCEwWACkMQkACCCIoORAAEoAAAwBFABCA=}#}
Students who could see that their beliefs might be wrong were much more
likely to use skills to test their knowledge while they were studying. They’d check to
see if they really understood the material and found out holes (洞) in their
understanding.
Students who didn’t see that their knowledge could be wrong might just not study
as hard as they should be. They won’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understand
what they read, heard or did. They think they’ve got a subject down pat. But when
they’re asked to explain it on a test, they don’t really understand as much as they
thought that they did.
Students who knew their beliefs could be wrong used skills that helped them in
studying and test-taking, her team found.
But how did these students react when they got test scores back To find out,
Porter studied 88 high-school students. All had the same math teacher.
Porter gave them the same questions as before to see how much they questioned
their beliefs. Four months later, after their teacher had graded a test, Porter passed
out other questions to see how the students were reacting to their test grades.
Teens who could see their beliefs might be wrong said they’d change their
study skills. Besides, they’d decide how to improve to master the material for the
next test. These students appeared to be more persistent (持续的) than the others.
Instead of just going to “try, try and try again” in some mindless way, they would be
taking an honest look at what they’d done wrong and try to find out how to avoid (避
免) that next time. They ended up with higher grades in math.
“There’s not a person out there that doesn’t run into failure,” Porter says. “But
really, the only way to get better is by persisting and learning from your failures.”
27. Knowing their knowledge could be wrong could ______.
A. make students study more easily
B. make students stop thinking more
C. help students question their grades
D. help students check their knowledge

______.
A. learned a subject for a long time B. understood a subject very well
C. found out some holes in a subject D. had some problems with a subject

A. what Porter’s team studied B. who Porter’s team studied
