We travelled in Thailand. The staff at the hotels we stayed in went out of their way to make us feel welcome. You may say that they were just doing their jobs, but this is not how it felt to us. At the iuDia Hotel in Ayutthaya the staff went above and beyond what we would have expected. The dining room was not open in the evening and when we asked where we could get a takeaway meal the front desk girl walked us to the nearby restaurant. She explained that the hotel staff would provide us with plates and dishes once we returned. Not only did they provide what we needed, but they also put our food in servicing bowls and took care of the clean-up while we slept. We were grateful and deeply touched by their kindness and care.
For the rest of our visit to Thailand we stayed at the Novotel in Rangsit. Since we were there for a long period of time we became familiar with a few of the staff. They paid attention to our needs and did their best to ensure our stay was a pleasant one. They were also happy to stop and chat with us, asking questions about our stay, what we had done that day, recommending things for us to do and sharing parts of their personal lives with us.Again, it may be said that their friendliness was part of their job but somehow, I did not feel that was the case. It felt natural, open and honest and I would like to think that they enjoyed our conversations as much as we enjoyed theirs.
On one of our walks my brother and I were offered bottles of fresh water by one of the locals. She felt that we needed it and did not want to take payment for the two bottles she offered. She finally agreed to take 10 Thai bahts(泰铢). Instead we gave her 20.

C.To tell us where to eat when the dining room is closed.
D.To show it is hard to get a takeaway meal in Thailand.
25.What can we know about the author from paragraph 2
A.He tried to know more about life in Thailand.
B.He wanted to show what life he lived to the staff.
C.He was getting along well with the staff in the hotel.
D.He liked to know more about other people’s secrets.
26.Why did the author pay one of the locals 20 Thai bahts
A.The author wanted to express gratitude.
B.The local asked the author for 20 Thai bahts.
C.The author didn’t take any change for the drink.
D.Each bottle of fresh water was worth 10 Thai bahts.
27.Which can best describe the author’s experience in Thailand
A.Exciting. B.Dangerous. C.Disappointing. D.Pleasant.

Who first proposed the holiday for workers It’s not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title.
Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a“general holiday for the laboring classes”. But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter J. McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, according to the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades(游行), picnics and parties—festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit“the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday before Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and devoted to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economy.
28.What can we know from paragraph 2
A.People’s views about the founder of Labor Day vary.
B.The author considered Matthew Maguire the founder.
C.Peter J. McGuire wanted to set a few days for a holiday.
D.Labor Day was originally set up for American machinists.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A.The real meaning of Labor Day. B.The development of Labor Day.
C.The reason of establishing Labor Day. D.People’s emphasis on Labor Day.
30. What does the underlined word“festivities” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Manners. B.Approaches. C.Rewards. D.Celebrations.
31.What idea does the author want to convey in the last two paragraphs
A.It is known that America develops very fast. B.The original meaning of Labor Day changes.
C.It is worthwhile to set a day for the laborers. D.The labor movement makes the life unsteady.

The ocean is a huge body of saltwater that covers about 71 percent of Earth’s surface. An estimated 97 percent of the world’s water is found in the ocean. Because of this, the ocean has considerable impact on weather, temperature, and the food supply of humans and other organisms. The ocean remains a mystery. More than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped, explored, or even seen by humans. A far greater percentage of the surfaces of the moon and the planet Mars has been mapped and studied than of our own ocean floor.
Although there is much more to learn, oceanographers have already made some amazing discoveries. For example, we know that the ocean contains towering mountain ranges and deep valleys, just like those on land. The peak of the world’s tallest mountain—Mount Qomolangma in the Himalaya, measuring 8848.86 meters high-would not even break the surface of the water if it was placed in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench or Philippine Trench, two of the deepest parts of the ocean. On the other hand, the Atlantic Ocean is relatively shallow because large parts of its seafloor are made up of continental shelves—parts of the continents that extend far out into the ocean. The average depth of the entire ocean is 3.720 meters.
It is unknown how many different species call the ocean their home. With many ocean ecosystems suffering from rising sea temperatures, pollution, and other problems, some oceanographers believe the number of species is dropping. Still, there may be many positive surprises awaiting oceanographers in the years ahead. It could be that more than 90 percent of the ocean’s species are still undiscovered, with some scientists estimating that there are anywhere between a few hundred thousand and a few million more to be discovered. Currently, scientists know of around 226,000 ocean species. Since the ocean is so vast, there is plenty for future oceanographers from all corners of the globe to explore and discover.
32.Why does the author mention the moon and Mars
A.To indicate people’s determination to know space.
B.To show people know quite little about the ocean.
C.To remind us that we need more knowledge about space.
D.To tell space exploration is more crucial than that of oceans.
33.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2
A.Reasons why ocean floors are rough.
B.Significance of the ocean floor to animals.
C.The heights of different mountain ranges.
D.Some ocean knowledge from oceanographers.
34.What’s the good aspect about the oceans from the last paragraph
A.Perhaps there are more species than known.
B.Problems about the oceans have been solved.
C.Oceanographers have calculated the ocean species.
D.The number of ocean species has stopped dropping.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.We must stop the ocean pollution
B.The oceans bring benefits to people
C.The oceans deserve our further study
D.We should have a positive attitude to oceans

I was driving home, northbound on a 6-lane highway. A pickup truck crashed into a car which was switching lanes. A huge accident, involving 5 other cars, unfolded in front of me.Immediately, I ran to a car which was upside down. I got someone to help by holding pressure on a big cut above the woman’s left ear, and then, with help, got her and a large, unconscious man, both upside down, out of the car. I then went to the four other cars to check if anyone else was hurt badly. Fortunately, no one else was in serious condition. It all took just a few minutes.
In the meantime, the southbound traffic had stopped. I looked over and saw a group of 12 people, out of their cars standing in a circle about 15 feet away from a young man, bloody and wounded, lying still on the pavement. I asked a couple of different people what had happened. The young man had gotten out of his car to cross the road and help, when a car drove along the inside lane, very fast, to get around the stopped traffic. The “Good Samaritan” was hit by the car, which launched him high in the air. He lay where he dropped. Everyone said he was dead; several had checked, But a feeling inside me said, “I didn’t check him. Can they be certain he is dead ”
He was covered in blood with arms and legs hurt and his head almost to his chest. I felt for pulses(脉搏) at different spots and felt nothing. Then I checked him once again. I realized at that moment, I was feeling for a normal pulse. When I felt again with this in mind. I thought I felt a very weak and rapid heart rate of about 160. 第四部分 写作
第一节
Nowadays, mental health is as important as physical health, contributing to shaping our character. Only with mental health can we think positively, study effectively and live happily.
To enjoy good mental health, we must, first of all, stay positive. With a positive view, we can look on the bright side of things and get rid of unnecessary worries.Secondly, we should strive to surround ourselves with supportive people who encourage and inspire us. Lastly, make it a habit to take regular exercise. After all, a sound mind in a sound body is what it takes to chase our ultimate goals.
It’s time to start prioritizing mental health, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of good mental health.
第二节
By then, the ambulances were driving up. When I motioned to the ambulance driver, he shook his head, and pointed to the other crash victims. I yelled, became very angry, and indicated to the ambulance driver this person was alive and needed help first, as I had done checks on all the others already. He understood what I was trying to say and did in fact, attend to the man thought to be dead.
Due to the doctors and care of nurses, the “Good Samaritan” did survive. In fact, he walked out of the hospital after many months with minimal side-effects. It was a big deal when he was released from the hospital, covered by all the news stations, all intending to honor the “Good Samaritan”. I smiled to myself, happy I was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time,to follow my instincts, and knowing a young man had his whole life in front of him.

W: Yes. Mr. Smith, do you have any requirements about the length of the summary

M: Read the text and make sure that you understand the meaning of the text. I suggest you copy the text three times, but you needn’t memorize it. Just try to remember all the new words. Be sure that you know their spelling, pronunciation and meaning.

Text 9
M: Did you catch the mouse yet I know you wanted to get rid of it before your mom comes to stay with you.
W: I didn’t. Two weeks of planning, and nothing. My mom always wants the house to be clean. I don’t want her to know I have a mouse here. She would be so uncomfortable.
M: Well, the traps usually work if you put peanut butter in them. You can take the mouse out to a field and let it go.
W: I bought some of those and tried the peanut butter, but it didn’t really work. It sure did love that peanut butter, though.
M: Well, how about a trap that has glue on it You could still let it go later.
W: I tried that, too, but I think this is a very small mouse. It didn’t weigh enough to get stuck.
M: What are you going to do
W: Well, I have one day to catch it. If not, I’ll have to think of a story to tell Mom. She’s only here for seven days. Maybe I can start talking about how I lost my little pet mouse.
Text 10
M: Hi, I’m Mike. Now I want to tell you something about my after-work activities. I’m interested in sports. I exercise every day to keep healthy. I enjoy running particularly. I run across fields and jump over streams around my home every morning. While I’m running, I think about all sorts of things. Sometimes I’m surprised to find that I’ve managed to solve the problem that was on my mind. I’m going to try London Marathon next year. It’s a long hard race, but I want to do it very much. I’m interested in climbing as well. I’ll never become an expert climber, but I successfully completed a course in ice climbing ten years ago, and I did a series of easy climbs in the Alps during the next few years after that. My wife doesn’t share my interests. She went climbing with me once but she found she felt ill as soon as she got about 1,000 metres. So we decided to follow different hobbies. Anyway, I enjoy myself by doing sports.
