When Susan arrived there later, she looked at the children in surprise. They were playing with what Susan considered boring happily.Seeing this,Susan understood that although there was no yo-yo,they could also enjoy themselves.Jim asked her to join them playing together instantly he saw Susan. It was at that moment that Susan realised she had focused too much on what she didn’t have but ignored what she had.
That night after the guests left,Susan sat alone in her room.On her bed was the purple dress given to her as a birthday gift. She thought to herself,“It seems that the dress doesn’t look that bad.Actually,I like all the clothes Mum bought for me.” She was sorry for having shouted at her mother. So she ran to Mum’s room and said,“Sorry,Mum.I should be satisfied with what I own.” Hearing the words, her mother hugged her in arms tightly, happy and touched about Susan’s change.2023-2024学年第一学期联片办学期中考试

第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Depths of our Earth hold great wonders. Below we explore four deepest places on Earth.
Veryovkina Cave, Georgia
Its entrance is located 2,285 meters above sea level. In 2018, scientists reached its bottom at 2,212 meters down. They squeezed through tiny openings to get from one cave to another. Rockfalls and floods waited secretly at every turn. Scientists could develop new medicines from microorganisms found in cave samples (样本). Caves also record ancient life and past climates.
The Mariana Trench, the Pacific Ocean
The Mariana Trench, with the maximum depth of 11,034 meters, is the deepest part of Earth’s surface. Pressure there is intolerable, but creatures like sea cucumbers (海参) still exist. Scientists exploring it can gain deeper insights into how plates move and why earthquakes and volcanoes occur.
The Dead Sea, the Middle East
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on land at about 1,400 feet (about 400 meters) below sea level. It’s nearly ten times saltier than ocean water, so you literally can’t sink in the Dead Sea! Scientists think it could go dry in a few decades. Despite its name, the Dead Sea holds life. A few kinds of algae (藻类) and bacteria love its salty water.
Lake Baikal, Russia
At the depth of 1,642 meters, Lake Baikal is the deepest inland body of water. The Baikal seal is the only known seal that lives in this world’s deepest freshwater lake. Scientists study the lake not only for the solid stuff beneath it that records climate history but because it’s in a zone where a plate is splitting apart, causing earthquakes.
21. What do we know about Veryovkina Cave
A. It was discovered in 2018.
B. Its pressure is far from bearable.
C. It is risky to explore.
D. Its samples are of little practical value.
22. Where should scientists go to better know earth movement
A. Georgia & Russia.
B. Russia & the Pacific Ocean.
C. Georgia & the Pacific Ocean.
D. The Middle East & Russia.
23. What do the four places have in common
A. They have some signs of life.
B. They are over a thousand meters deep.
C. They are results of climate change.
D. They are all below sea level.

Recently we celebrated my grandmother’s 90th birthday. Family members traveled to my hometown to visit her. This was the first time in many years that I had seen so many of them. Though this was an opportunity to see family, many people did not make it. Honestly, living far from hometown, I had missed many family gatherings. But this one made me realize how much I was really missing.
It seemed strange when I was looking at the faces, realizing whom they were and greeting them with open arms. After chatting for a while, we caught up on each other’s news. Several relatives suggested having a family reunion soon if everyone wasn’t so busy. But my grandmother’s generation was much busier, yet still found time to gather. They understood the importance of visiting one another. They knew time is flying and that those you care about most won’t be here forever.
Today, we focus on our careers and raising our kids. Our extended family isn’t the center it once was. Besides, we keep in touch on social media. But what we really miss are the potato salad, the moments of laughter and sudden bursts of excitement when we hug someone we haven’t seen for over 10 years. Although the next get-together is always a year or so away, people aren’t goods and everyone has an expiration (到期) date.
I left my grandmother’s party with a much better sense of who I am and where I come from. I spent valuable time with people who contributed to who I am today. I had forgotten how much I love them and I was reminded how much I am loved.
24. How did the author feel about missing previous family gatherings
A. Indifferent. B. Sad. C. Regretful. D. Annoyed.
25. What do we know about the author’s grandmother’s generation
A. They were carefree.
B. They held family dear.
C. They took time seriously.
D. They visited family frequently.
26. What does the author mean by the last sentence in paragraph 3
A. Family reunions mean no fun.
B. All goods don’t have an expiration date.
C. People are always too busy to get together.
D. We should see loved ones more before it’s too late.
27. Why does the author write the text
A. To convince readers to meet friends.
B. To share an interesting family reunion.
C. To stress the value of family gatherings.
D. To compare different generations’ values.

If you’re homeless and looking for a temporary shelter in Hawaii’s capital, expect a visit from a robotic police dog that will scan your eyes to make sure you don’t have a fever. That’s just one of the ways public safety agencies are starting to use Spot, a new robot that runs around with quick movement.
The police officials experimenting with the four-legged machines say they’re just another tool to keep emergency responders out of harm’s way as they search for dangers.
Joseph O’Neal, an officer of the Honolulu Police Department, said the robot has protected officers, shelter staff and residents by scanning body temperatures between mealtimes at a shelter where homeless people could quarantine (隔离) and get tested for COVID-19. The robot is also used to remotely interview individuals who have tested positive.
The company that makes the robots, Boston Dynamics, says it’s trying to do a good job of explaining to the public and its customers what Spot can and cannot do. “One of the most difficult tasks is accurately explaining the state of the technology to people who have never had personal experience with it,” said Michael Perry, vice president of the company.
There are roughly 500 Spot robots now in the wild. Perry said they’re commonly used by companies to check dangerous areas. Spot is also used to monitor construction sites, mines and factories, equipped with whatever sensor is needed for the job.
It’s still mostly controlled by humans, though all they have to do is tell it which direction to go and it can climb stairs or cross over rough areas. It can also operate autonomously, but only if it’s already memorized a road and there aren’t too many surprise obstacles (障碍). “The first value that most people see in the robot is taking a person out of a dangerous situation,” Perry said.
28. What do police officials use Spot robots do
A. Treat patients’ fever.
B. Find out patients’ eye problems.
C. Protect homeless people.
D. Take people’s body temperature.
29. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The shelter where people get tested.
B. The function of the robotic police dog.
C. The future development of the robots.
D. The characteristic of the four-legged machine.
30. What’s the company’s big challenge
A. How to describe the technology.
B. How to win its customers’ trust.
C. How to promote Spot robots.
D. How to produce more Spot robots.
31. What can we infer about Spot robots from the last paragraph
A. They can plan their own road easily.
B. They can choose direction themselves.
C. They can overcome many obstacles.
D. They can remember a familiar road.

Commercial airlines alone contribute around 3 percent of total global carbon emissions. But the industry is actively looking for green solutions in the form of sustainable (可持续发展的) airline fuel, and in one case, that fuel may have had a previous life as your household food waste. In a study released this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers detail a method of transforming food waste into sustainable airline fuel.
Biomass (生物质), such as animal and food waste, can be transformed into biofuels, which are renewable liquid fuels made from organic matter. Derek Vardon, a senior research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), says that their fuel worked as a mixture of 90 percent conventional petrol airline fuel and 10 percent alternative airline fuel required by the industry currently. They also show they could push it to a 70/30 mixture with more time and testing available.
Major companies are eager to participate in sustainable airline fuel because some sustainable
solutions, such as battery-operated commercial planes, just aren’t possible yet with current battery technology. A battery-powered plane would be too heavy to fly long distances, so fuel that works in the same way as the fuel we have is a simpler way to trade out emission-heavy fossil fuels.
Vardon says that because the wet waste used in the process would normally go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and break down to release greenhouse gases, the process of making and using sustainable airline fuel could actually have a negative carbon footprint when scaled up.
Commercial airlines are also on board to find an affordable and sustainable solution to the carbon-intensive process of air travel. Airlines are looking to hit aggressive sustainability goals by 2050, including decreasing net carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent.
32. Which of the following is used for sustainable airline power
A. Biomass.
B. Liquid fuel.
C. Battery power.
D. Fossil fuel.
33. Why are commercial planes still fuel-powered
A. Biofuel proves less costly and easier to produce.
B. It’s convenient to create the proper fuel mixture.
C. Biofuel is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
D. Fuel-powered planes are likely to travel lighter and farther.
34. What does the underlined phrase “on board” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Taking off.
B. Participating in.
C. Holding a meeting.
D. Appearing on stage.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Alternative Energy to Fossil Fuel
B. How to Get Fossil Fuel Sustainable
C. Changing Food Waste into Airplane Fuel
D. How to Decrease Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Laughter is the best medicine. It helps solve problems, improve relationships, and support both physical and emotional health. 36 Read the following suggestions and learn to make laughter part of your life.
Laugh at yourself. Laughing at yourself is one of the biggest differences between happy people and unhappy people. It communicates to both you and the people around you that it’s no big deal. So be brave enough to share your embarrassing moments. 37 When something negative happens, try to make it a humorous story that will make you and others laugh.
38 Keep a toy on your desk or in your car. Put up a funny poster in your office. Choose a computer screensaver that makes you laugh. Frame photos of you and your family or friends having fun. All of these are good resources of laughter.
Spend time with funny people. Even if you don’t consider yourself a humorous person, you can still seek out new friends who are ready to laugh and who can make you laugh. These are people who find humor in everyday events. Their playful points of view and laughter are contagious (传染的). 39
Don’t go a day without laughing. Set aside 10 minutes each day to do something that amuses you. You can watch some humorous videos or look at some funny photos online. 40 Try thinking back to a joke you heard or read, or a comedy you watched.
As long as you have a joyful heart and purposely make time to laugh, you’ll be amazed at how differently you will begin to view your job, your family, your relationships and yourself.

B. If you can’t find any humor at hand, recall something funny.
C. When you are around them, you’ll be more likely to laugh too.

“I only want a yo-yo as my birthday gift.I don’t want the dress and I hate purple,” Susan shouted at her mother when she saw the dress.“Even a five-year-old child has a yo-yo.Do you know why others don’t want to be my friends It is all because I don’t have a yo-yo.It is so boring to live in this house,”Susan said angrily.
Her mother ignored her complaints and changed the topic, saying,“Uncle Brown,Uncle Smith,Aunt Aniston and their children are coming for dinner tonight. So,you can play with your cousins.”“But,I don’t think there is anything interesting to play in the house,”Susan complained again.
The guests arrived at 6:00 pm.Susan guided the four children who came with the adults to her room.“Do you have any interesting toys,Susan ” asked Jim,one of the children.Susan felt that Jim was asking for a yo-yo.She felt embarrassed and brought out her Snakes and Ladders (蛇梯棋).All the children played the game together.Everyone enjoyed playing the game except Susan. After a little while, her cousin Sara asked,“Susan, can we go downstairs to the basement ” Susan said,“No,there is nothing interesting to play in it.”Ignoring Susan’s words, the children raced to the basement excitedly. They found there were some empty cartons, ropes, old broken toys...Upon seeing this,Sara came up with an idea—the memory game. She arranged a few things on the floor and closed her eyes. Then Jim took away an object randomly and Sara should guess what the missing object was.
