that she couldn’t do that. She said she had to ask the manager for help. Could you please give
me an answer as soon as possible

1
{#{QQABKYCAggioAAJAAQhCQwnACkKQkBGCCKoGREAEoAIBwQFABAA=}#}
him about the value of gold. After hearing these words, Harry made a decision.
The next morning Harry sold his farm to his friend Paul and went to search for gold. He
travelled all over Africa and Asia, but couldn t find any gold. He became sad. In the end, he
threw himself into a river and died.
After three years, Paul found a special stone on the farm. He put it in the living room. Joe
saw it by accident. He said the stone was gold. Paul was excited because there were many
stones like this on the farm.
Sometimes, what you want is beside you, but you don’t realize its value.

says, “As a student, you can’t be too careful.”
Andy impressed me most with courage he gave me. Last term, I tried out for the singing
club at school. I was interested in singing, but I was afraid of singing in front of many people.
Andy told me that he believed I was good enough and could win. Then he helped me practise
singing every day. At last I won first prize.
I want to say thank you to Andy. I hope he is my good friend all my life.

A man was walking through the woods with his axe(斧头) when a small tree called to him. It
said, “Hello friend. Can you cut down those bigger trees They’re blocking(遮挡) the sun. It is so
crowded(拥挤的) here that I have no space to spread my roots(根). I can’t feel the wind.”
The little tree held out its tiny leaves. It looked so sad. It continued, “If those trees were gone,
I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”
The man thought for a while and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting
them down. Soon, he cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it would be able to feel the
sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.
But something else happened instead. The sun’s heat came first. The small tree wasn’t used to
so much sunshine. It started to burn. Strong wind and heavy rain came - without the bigger trees to
protect it, the small tree was hit by the storm. Soon, the tree was nearly dead.
“You’ve been quite foolish(愚蠢的),” said a snake that saw what had happened. “You brought

this on yourself. If you’d left the bigger trees alone, the sun and storm wouldn’t have hurt you so

them. You will be strong. But now, you’re dying.”

I felt very ill. At first, I could not move. The knife was in my skin and in the mast(桅杆). I
pulled and pulled. My skin tore and I was free. I went down to the cabin(客舱 ). I washed the
wound(伤口) and put a piece of clean cloth around it.
There was nothing I could do on the ship. I could not sail(启航) her alone. I climbed into the
water. It was not deep. I was able to walk slowly toward the shore.
The mutineers(哗变者) were on the other side of the island. I was not far from the stockade(木
寨) where my friends were.
“If I can get to them,” I thought, “I can tell them about the ship. They will be able to come here
and sail her away.”
My wound hurt, but these thoughts helped me to keep going.
When I got to the stockade, I saw a large fire burning inside. This surprised me. Captain
Smollett did not like large fires. There was no noise coming from the stockade. No one was on watch.
This also surprised me.
Then a voice cried, “Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!”
I knew it was Silver’s parrot. Before I could turn and run, Silver came to the door, a pistol(手枪)
in his hand. “Who’s there ” he shouted.
In the light of the fire, he could see me.
“Jim Hawkins!” he said. “I’ve always liked you, boy, so I’ll not hurt you. I’ll let you choose.
You can join me, or you can go to your friends - if they’ll have you back. They are not pleased with
you.”
“Where are my friends ” I asked. “What have you done with them ”
“Nothing,” Silver said. “Yesterday morning, the doctor came to us with a white flag. ‘Let’s
talk,’ he said. ‘The ship’s gone. None of us can leave the island.’ He was right. We looked out to sea.
We could not see the Hispaniola. ‘How many are you ’ I asked. ‘Four,’ he said. ‘And one of us is
wounded. The boy’s gone. We don’t know where he is. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.’”
“You think you’re very clever, Silver,” I said. “You think I am a fool and afraid of you. I’m not.
You have lost the ship, most of your crew(船员), and the treasure. And why Because I heard you
talking to Dick. I told the doctor about you. I cut the rope. I killed your men on the ship. Kill me if
you must, but tell the doctor that I was not afraid of you.”
“Kill the boy,” shouted one of the men.
“Keep quiet. I’m the captain(船长) here,” Silver shouted at him. For several minutes, Silver and
his men shouted at one another. I thought they might kill him, but at last they were quiet.

“Jim is a good and brave boy,” Silver said. “I’ll kill any man who touches him.” He turned to
me. “You’ve got the ship safe somewhere, haven’t you boy ” he said. “There’s trouble coming, Jim.
But you can trust me.”
I was sure I could not trust Silver. And it was difficult to know what he wanted from me. But I
was safer with him than with the other mutineers. They wanted me dead.
I looked toward the fire. One of the men had a book. He was doing something to it.
“What are they doing ” I asked Silver.
“We’ll soon find out,” he said. And he was right.
The five men left the fire and came toward us. One of them put a piece of paper into Silver’s
hand, then moved back.
Silver looked at it. “The black spot(点)!” he said. “So that’s what it’s about. You don’t want me
as your captain. Is that right ”
“Everything has gone wrong,” the man said. “You’ve made too many mistakes. And we shall
have to pay for them. We want a different captain.”
Silver began to laugh. “You do, do you ” he said. “Then look at this.”
He took out a yellow piece of paper and threw it to the ground. The men moved to look at it. I
saw what it was. It was the map of the treasure.
“The doctor gave me the map,” he said. “Do you want a different captain now ”

In recent years, with China’s ecological(生态的) protection and anti-poaching(反偷猎) efforts,
the population of Tibetan antelopes(藏羚羊) has increased, to the point that their protection level has
been dropped from endangered to a near-threatened species(近危物种 ). The number of Tibetan
antelopes in China has increased from fewer than 70,000 in the 1980s and 1990s to nearly 300,000

Tibetan antelopes are mostly found in the plateau(高原) region of northwest China, including
the Tibet Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The
species is under first-class state protection in China.
The Hoh Xil(可可西里) nature reserve has not reported any poaching for more than 10 years
and the population of Tibetan antelopes in the area has recovered. In Qinghai Province, Tibetan
antelopes mostly live in the HohXil National Nature Reserve in Sanjiangyuan National Park.
“Qinghai Province began its anti-poaching and protection work in the 1990s,” said Dawa
Drolma, an official of the administration bureau of the park. “Our mission(任务 ) is, as always, to
work toward anti-poaching and the prevention of human interference(干预) through traffic control
during migration(迁徙), escorting(护送) during farrowing(分娩) and the rescue of injured(受伤的)

Imagine pioneers traveling west in the 1800s. In those days, it was hard to find running water
and shops where to buy things. As time went by, most pioneers had to make their homes near a river
so that they could get water easily.
How did rivers help people live in the past
Back in the pioneer days, people grew their own food, caught their own fish, and collected their
own water. 61 People also used rivers as roads, traveling on boats. Traders shipped goods(商品)
to people from other areas.
62
When building many factories right next to rivers for the water’s power(电力) to make
machines work, some people choose to live near a river for working. They use the river to ship large
goods, and some of them work at these factories where power factories provide electricity(电) to
homes and businesses. 63
Who wouldn’t want to live near a river
Some people are nervous about living near rivers because rivers can cause floods. Every once in
a while, floodwaters rise higher than a house, ruining(毁坏) many things in the house.
64 Such waste causes water to smell bad and pollutes the crops we eat. Water and crops in
polluted areas can make people very sick.
How do people decide where to live
65 Rivers can provide jobs and fun activities in a beauiful place. However, those living by
rivers should be willing to accept possible problems as well.
A. Why do people live near rivers now
B. Some factories put their waste into rivers.
C. Staying close to a river made it easy to get water for living.

For many Chinese people, Lantern Festival, which fell on Feb.15, 2022, marks an end to two
weeks of the Lunar(农历) New Year. For folk artist Wang De, it is also the busiest, best time for him

tree flowers”, lives in Yuxian County in the city of Zhangjiakou, North China’s Hebei Province.
To create molten iron fireworks, scrap iron(铁屑) is melted to 1,600℃ and thrown against a
cold wall to blinding effect.
Wang, 58, and his assistants put on over a dozen dashuhua shows for local people and tourists
as part of the Spring Festival activities each year. The folk artist hopes the tradition can bring more
visitors to his hometown of Zhangjiakou, which caught international attention.
Dashuhua is a traditional form of fireworks show that takes place during certain festivals. In
ancient times, this was a show that only those people with wealth and high social positions could
afford. There are only four people left in China who have mastered(掌握) the ancient practice, and
three of them are not young, according to local media reports.
Because of the risk of the show, it’s easy for dashuhua artists to get hurt when they are giving
shows. And the high-risk tradition is still only kept for the brave. During a show a few years ago,
Wang got serious burns on his leg and it took two months to recover(恢复).
Both Wang’s father and grandfather were blacksmiths. “I leamed the craft from my father.
When I was young, I thought it was exciting. But years later I also felt it was my duty(责任) to pass
it on to the next generation(代),” he says.
