How long does it take to learn to communicate in a new language It's hard to say, right Then what if you have to try to pick up a language without anyone helping Impossible, you may say. Well, the truth is, it's not. You've done it before, remember Right after you were born. You didn't have a translator or a grammar book, but you learnt to speak a new language!
If you can picture how it happens, you'll see how amazing it is that we learn to talk. Even scientists don't understand how we can be born and a few years later know so many words and how to speak a language. It's a big mystery(神秘的事物)!
However, when you think about babies' first words, you'll find it's clear that they learn them by copying sounds from people around them. After hearing their parents repeat“mama”and “dada” time after time, it's no surprise that such words become babies’ first.
The experts believe babies’ learning to talk is about more than just copying sounds. For example, children can say things they've never heard before as soon as they begin to form their first sentences. It seems they can come up with thoughts and ideas of their own! Some believe children can learn simple language rules just by listening to those around them. Through trial and error (不断摸索),they quickly learn to choose words and work out which words go together to get the message across.
As kids grow up, they get better at using a language by changing the way they talk to match the people around them. Amazingly, kids from different parts of the world learn to talk in similar ways, with similar steps, and at similar times as they grow older. Some researchers believe that humans are born with the ability to learn languages and are still trying to show if it's true.
