I liked being a mess. My desk was always surrounded with bowls of food grain, yogurt and old magazines. My floor was full of sweaters, stuffed animals, socks, shoes… I couldn’t always see these things, but I knew that they were safe, lying somewhere.
One day in August, all of my friends and family members were doing their own businesses. I told my mom that I didn’t know what to do and she advised me to clean my room. When I opened the door to my bedroom, everything was in its usual messy arrangement. I became aware of the moldy (发霉的) smell and noticed a spider (蜘蛛) on top of my mirror. I suddenly felt terrible for everything in my room that I had buried and had an urge to make them reappear.
In a box buried under old textbooks, I found a letter that my grandfather had written me at camp. I remembered my dad rocking me to sleep the night Grandfather died, and how the tears wouldn’t stop. Tears began to roll down my cheeks again.
In the drawer next to my bed, I found a friendship watchband from my childhood best friend, Aubrey, who had given it to me before she moved to California. I had lost so many precious childhood memories over time, letting them slip (溜走) away into the tide like grains of sand.
Under my bed I even found that picture of my mom and me in Jamaica. I stared at that girl, hardly able to recognize this person who had drowned in the mess of my room so many years before. I decided to completely re-organize and clean my room so that all the books, belts and baskets were in their right place. It was like finding the missing pieces of the puzzle.
The finishing touch was framing that photo and hanging it high up on my wall. After all, it was me I had been searching for.

7. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. Thinking of the past B. Tidying up the room.

Can dogs and cats live in peace in the same home People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new way for success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while attacking and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attack, while a dog doing the same signals admitting defeat.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously thought. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The advantage of this research on cats and dogs may not only about pets — to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
8. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .

A They eat and sleep together.
B. They observe each other’s behaviors.
C They learn to speak each other’s language.
D. They know something from each other’s voices.
11. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs
A. We should learn to live in peace.
B. We should know more about animals.

People who grow up outside of cities are better at finding their way around than urbanites (都市人), a large study on navigation (导航) suggests. The results, described online on March 30 in Nature, hint that learning to handle environmental complexity as a child strengthens mental muscles for spatial skills.
Nearly 400,000 people from 38 countries around the world played a video game called Sea Hero Quest, designed by scientists and game developers as a fun way to collect data (数据) about people’s brains. Players piloted a boat in search of various targets.
On average, people who said they had grown up outside of cities, where they would have probably met lots of complicated paths, were better at finding the targets than people who were raised in cities.
What’s more, the difference between city residents and outsiders was most obvious in countries where cities tend to have simple layouts (布局), such as Chicago with its streets laid out at 90-degree angles. The simpler the cities, the bigger the advantage for people from more rural areas, scientist Antoine Coutrot of CNRS and his colleagues report.
Still, from these video game data, scientists can’t definitively say that the childhood environment is behind the differences in navigation. But it’s possible. “As a kid, if you are exposed to a complex environment, you learn to find your way, and you develop the right cognitive processes to do so,” Coutrot says.
Other factors have been linked to navigational performance, including age, gender, education and even a superior sense of smell. Figuring out these details will give doctors a more accurate baseline (基准) of a person’s navigational abilities. That, in turn, might help reveal when these skills weaken, as they do in early Alzheimer’s discase, for example.
12. How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By playing a game called Sea Hero Quest. B. By gathering data from the video game.
C. By recording electrical activities in brains. D. By comparing various targets of the game.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4
A. City outsiders performed no better than city residents in the study.
B. Cities’ simple layouts gave city residents an advantage in the game.
C. There was no difference between city residents and outsiders.
D. The players’ performance had something to do with their earlier experience.
14. Which of the following may Coutrot agree with
A. Childhood surroundings might affect people’s navigational abilities.
B. Gender (性别) and education are key to developing navigational abilities.
C. A sense of smell bears no relation to navigational abilities.
D. The study of navigational abilities can help cure Alzheimer’s disease.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. How environment impacts early childhood development
B. Why is early childhood education important for our future
C. When is the best time to obtain your navigational skills
D Where you grew up may shape your navigational skills

They can learn to read each other’s body signals suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously thought.

由第一段中的“According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
由第二段中的“here was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while attacking and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes.
D. Where you grew up may shape your navigational skills
B 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第二段的句子“Nearly 400,000 people from 38 countries around the world played a video game called Sea Hero Quest, designed by scientists and game developers as a fun way to collect data (数据) about people’s brains. (来自世界38个国家的近40万人玩了一款名为‘海洋英雄探索’的视频游戏,该游戏由科学家和游戏开发商设计,是一种收集人类大脑数据的有趣方式。)”可知,研究人员是通过收集视频游戏的数据来进行研究的。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“On average, people who said they had grown up outside of cities, where they would have probably met lots of complicated paths, were better at finding the targets than people who were raised in cities. (通常,那些说自己在城市以外长大的人,在那里他们可能会遇到许多复杂的道路,比在城市长大的人更善于找到目标。)”可知,一个人早期的成长环境影响着他们在游戏中的表现。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段Coutrot所说的“As a kid, if you are exposed to a complex environment, you learn to find your way, and you develop the right cognitive processes to do so (作为一个孩子,如果你接触到一个复杂的环境,你就会学会找到道路,并发展出正确的认知过程。)” 故选A项。
由文章第三段“On average, people who said they had grown up outside of cities, where they would have probably met lots of complicated paths, were better at finding the targets than people who were raised in cities. (通常,那些说自己在城市以外长大的人,在那里他们可能会遇到许多复杂的道路,比在城市长大的人更善于找到目标。)”以及上下文可知,本文主要通过对比在城里长大人和在城外长大的人在导航能力方面的差异告诉我们人的成长环境可能影响人的导航能力。所以D项Where you grew up may shape your navigational skills
