Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)
In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it
highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity(繁荣). Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well
they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often
life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of
many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary player, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “ I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
69. What does this passage mainly talk about
A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B.Opinions about competition are different among people.
C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
70. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage
A.It pushes society forward. B.It builds up a sense of duty.
C.It improves personal abilities. D.It encourages individual efforts.
71. The underlined phrase “ the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means _____.
A.those who try their best to win
B.those who value competition most highly
C.those who are against competition most strongly
D.those who rely on others most for success
72. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”
A.One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others’.
B.One’s success in competition needs great efforts.
C.One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D.One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.
73. Which point of view may the author agree to
A.Every effort should be paid back.
B.Competition should be encouraged.
C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
B.Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文):(12分)
At the time my son was born in 1956, I shared a hospital room with a young woman who

The flowers arrived just as Ann and I were finishing supper.
“Another bouquet for you,” she said, smiling.
“No, not this time,” I said, looking at the card. “These are for you.”
Ann stared at the blossoms a long time, not saying anything. She ran her fingers across the pale-blue vase and lightly touched each of the sweet roses as though trying to impress them on her memory, “How can I ever thank you ” she said softly.
I felt 78 , for it was such a little kindness on my part. The son born to my husband and me that day in 1956 turned out only child. For nearly 21 yaers he filied our lives with love and laughter, making us feel complete. But on Easter morning in April 1977, after a long ,painful 79 with cancer, he died quietly in our arms.
Before the funeral, I was alone with my son in a room filled with the scent of roses, when a delivery man brought in a tiny bouquet. I didn’t read the card until later, as we drove to the grave, “To W. John Graves,” the card said, “from the boy who was born with you at Memorial Hospital, and his mother.”

For most of us, the purpose of the holidays is to bring peace, love and goodwill towards all. Yet, for many, the holiday season often means stress, pressure, d 81 and loneliness.
These feelings, often known as the “holiday blues”, may be even more p 82 , due to the emotional turmoil of the past few months, not to mention the unsteady economy.
Experts say even the more ritual tasks of shopping, decorating, late-night parties, cooking, planning and family reunions can be holiday stressors.
In addition, the psychological phenomenon known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, may bring a specific type of depression r 83 to winter’s shorter days and longer nights.
“Certainly just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean people are going to be happy,” says Dr. Doug Jacobs of Harvard University. “And this will be a particularly hard holiday for some who are d 84 with a lost job, debt, or even a lost loved one.”
And with family reunions becoming less frequent events over the years, there is now the added pressure of getting just one chance to get it all right. “Families are much more different now, the disappointment and sense of alienation that often r 85 from family gatherings, is actually a realization that the fantasy is not met.” says John Stutesman, a clinical psychologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Still, say experts, the blues should be addressed. The most essential step, says Stutesman, is for the individual to acknowledge their feelings and the r 86 for their withdrawal. “Denial will only compound the stress they’re feeling.”
Stutesman recommends people do things that are normally comforting in order to get a handle on the holiday stress. “If they’re feeling a little blue, they should try to do things personally satisfying for them. Maybe this is exercise, cooking, r 87 a book, or massage.”

“Well”, said Henry, “suddenly the captain’s voice came over the loudspeaker. He said we had to make an emergency landing on the sea. He told us not to panic, but to do exactly what the stewardess said. I was terrified, but I tried to stay calm.
First the stewardess told us to take our life jackets out from under our seats. Then she instructed us to pull the jackets over our heads. She warned us not to blow up our jackets until we were outside.
A few seconds later the caption told us to get ready to land. The stewardess then instructed us to lean forward in our seats, to put our heads between our knees and to hold our arms around our legs.
She warned us not to unfasten our seat-belts. Then we just waited like that for a few seconds. It seemed like hours.
At last the plane hit the water and stopped. The stewardess instructed us to unfasten our seat-belts. Then she told us to go to the nearest exit and leave the plane quietly.
She instructed us to pull down the red handle on our life jackets when we were outside——the jackets would blow up automatically, she said. She also told us to pull the blue handle in order to turn on the jacket light.
She said there were enough rafts for everyone at the exits. She told us to get into the raft and do exactly what the crew member there said.
Well, I did everything the stewardess said. A few people panicked, but no one was hurt. We were picked up about two hours later——and here I am, safe and well, but I don’t think I’d like to go through it again.”
