One bright morning, I was out for my usual run when I met an old lady. She was waving her phone at me and speaking in a language I couldn't understand. It sounded like she was in a hurry to get somewhere. I quickly realized that she was lost and couldn't speak any English.

Corals(珊瑚) can produce CaCO3 under their bodies. This turns into hard, rock-like reefs(礁) which become homes to 25 percent of all the sea life. What if our homes can also naturally grow, just like reefs
A US company produces a new kind of concrete(混凝土) called Biolith, using bacteria that can make CaCO3. They first mixed sand and bacteria-in a mould(模具), and then added nutrient solution(培养液) to keep the bacteria alive. Five days later the Biolith bricks "grew up" and were ready to use. That's much faster than producing traditional concrete, which requires about 28 days.
According to the company, this method can greatly cut down carbon emissions(二氧化碳排放量) in the building industry. Traditional concrete is made of small stones. The stones are heated to temperatures greater than 1,300℃, during which CO comes out. A company reported that the concrete production industry accounts for 4.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Biolith, however, doesn't need heating so it's more environmentally friendly. The company plans to reduce 25 percent of carbon emissions from the concrete industry by 2030.
There are other similar technologies, but they are not in production yet. The University of Colorado in the US is studying a living, recyclable building material using cyanobacteria(蓝藻细菌). It can use CO and sunlight to grow and help get carbon. Scientists are trying to grow buildings out of fungi(菌类) on the Moon and Mars, which may lead to more ways of living on Earth.

How much water is there on the moon This is a question we have tried to answer for many years. A group of scientists from China and the UK found that the moon may have water "reservoirs(水库)", according to Nature Geoscience.
Over billions of years, asteroids(小行星) have hit the moon, causing the soil(土壤) to melt(熔化) and fly into space. It is then cooled down and falls back to the moon, forming beads(珠子) of glass. The Chang'e 5 probe, which returned to Earth on Dec. 17, 2020, brought back a total of 1,731 grams of rocks and soil from the moon, including glass beads, reported Xinhua.
The international research team looked into 32 glass beads. They found that about one ton of glass beads may contain 0.5 kilograms of water. "This 'water' wasn't a liquid(液体) but instead took the form of hydrogen(氢) in the glass beads, which can easily be turned into the water we can use," Hui Hejiu, one of the study authors, told Science and Technology Daily.
Researchers estimated that the water contained in the glass beads could reach to as much as 270 trillion(万亿) kilograms. "It's a lot more than we thought," Hui added.
The study said the hydrogen may come from the sun as part of solar(太阳的) winds. The glass beads have many small holes which can absorb(吸收) hydrogen from the wind.
This finding would be a "really big deal" for space exploration, as humans plan to settle on the moon in the future.
