Folke Borgstrom, an 18-year-old boy from Sweden, bought a jade (玉) necklace in Beijing. He came to China to take part in the 16th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students in Beijing and Yunnan from Oct 16 to Oct 30.
Borgstrom knew about jade from a Chinese costume drama. “A main character looks so noble (高贵的) and cool with jade,” Borgstrom said. After doing some online research on jade, he found out that it’s highly valued in Chinese culture. “As a symbol of virtue, jade is believed to have the power to bring good luck,” Borgstrom added. He became crazy about Chinese culture through the window of Chinese costume drama.
When it comes to spreading Chinese culture internationally, we often think of traditional ways, like setting up cultural exchange programs. However, Chinese pop culture, such as Chinese costume drama, has become a growing way for cultural spread.
Chulkyu Lee from South Korea, 16, likes to look through TikTok for short videos about Chinese pop culture. Recently, he put the Chinese TikTok hit pop music track My Surname is Shi (《我姓石》) on repeat.
“Through TikTok, I’ve also seen many real-life moments recorded by common Chinese people, which lets me know more about the daily lives of Chinese people and the real China,” said Lee.
Yang Yao, a program designer who has worked in international broadcasting for eight years with Yunnan Media Group, believes that more creative ways for spreading Chinese culture should be accepted. He takes South Korea as examples of this. You may not understand in the history of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392, 高丽王朝), but through South Korean dramas, you come to understand its traditional food like kimchi (韩国泡菜),” said Yang. China’s culture can go abroad in the similar way, said Yang.

A group of clams recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor (监测) the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station (水泵站) helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. However, one special worry for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers ask for help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams can sense the heavy metals and they shut their shells at once after sensing “dangerous” water. So the researchers chose eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. The clams are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to a system that records how wide the shells are open.
If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will go off and the water will be shut down. The result is believable because the clams are considering many different factors (因素) at the same time, according to ZME Science.
Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different kinds of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle dung, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to a big population of flies and a worse environment. Dung beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches (蟑螂) are used to deal with kitchen waste at several factories in China, according to a report of The Beijing News in 2018. About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock (牲畜).
26.Why did researchers get help from clams to monitor water quality
A. Clams can help clear heavy metals. B. Clams are inexpensive and easy to find.
C. Clams are regarded as delicious food. D. Clams are good at sensing pollution.
27.According to the passage, what is the right order of the following things
①A system records how wide the shells are open ②An alarm will go off
③At least four clams close their shells at the same time ④The clams are put in a container
A. ①③②④ B.①④③② C.④①③② D.④③②①
28.How do dung beetles help improve soil quality
A. By eating harmful waste. B. By burying cattle dung in the soil.
C. By producing fertilizer themselves. D. By controlling the loss of soil nutrients.
29. How many countries that use animal helpers are mentioned in the passage
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
30. What will the writer probably write next
A. More countries will use clams to monitor the local water quality.
B. The advantages of clams in monitoring the local water quality.
C. Other animals that have long been helpers for human activities.
D. Cockroaches are used to deal with kitchen waste in other countries.

Ten years ago, I set out to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck.
I found many volunteers for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments.
I did a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photos were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, “Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50.”
This message took up half of the page. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people were more likely to miss it and lucky people were more likely to find it.
Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on chances.
Lucky people are more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.
My research shows that lucky people live by several rules. Here are some of these rules:
* Listen to your gut instincts (直觉) – they are often right.
* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought ways.
* Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.
* See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.
46. Why did the writer do this experiment (2分)

In English, when someone is very angry, we say this person “sees red”, like the way a bull goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not just an expression for angry people, but also a scientific fact.
Researchers at North Dakota State University in the US found that there is a connection between the color red and anger. (A) Angry people really do “see red” while others don’t. And a preference for red over blue may even suggest a more hostile (怀有敌意的) character.
The study includes a number of tests. In the first, researchers asked a group of people which color they preferred, red or blue. These people then did a character test. Results showed that those who chose red are more hostile.
During a second test, the people looked at pictures that could be seen as either red or blue. Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the character test.
“Hostile people have hostile thoughts; hostile thoughts are connected with the color red. Therefore, hostile people see the red color more often,” the researchers say.
Finally, the people who took part in the character test were told about some situations in which they could take different actions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were more likely to show that they would hurt another person than those who preferred blue.
“An important message from this research is that color can send psychological (心理的) meaning,” the researchers said.
Where does this connection between the color red and anger come from Scientists said it might be a matter of evolution (进化). In ancient times, dangerous plants and animals could cause wounds and bleeding. So it may have become natural for our ancestors to connect the color red with danger.
